They've probably been waiting for the day they can move away from the US (I think she also mentioned the UK) and feel free to do what they want, knowing we will have less and less say in the world. And clearly that's what a lot of Americans want them to do, so I guess we brought it on ourselves.

The shame is, we'll never regain our former position of influence and respect. Wait until they decide to shift from the dollar as the universal currency. Many countries have long objected to the advantageousness of the arrangement for the U.S. But it's hard to change the status quo.

Bernie hates Democrats. He hates us more than Republicans. Now we're finding out that the murderer in Portland was a Bernie supporter who then flipped to Trump. We're going to see more and more of that. Google "horseshoe theory." The difference between the alt right and the alt left is negligible. In both cases it's feed by toxic masculinity and white supremacy.

Geez Marceline. This is so incredibly insulting.

"Former Ohio state Senator Nina Turner, who endorsed Sanders in 2016, was on hand to back Ellis, and said that California contest reflected the same divisions that roiled the party’s chairmanship battle at the national level.

She said Ellis garnered “the same energy that [Minnesota Rep.] Keith Ellison had until the establishment came in and choked the life out of people.’’ While Democratic leaders backed by big money interests “want to talk about Russia and Mr. Trump,’’ she said, they are ignoring “the movement of the people” on bedrock issues like health care."

I'm embarrassed that say that Nina Turner was my state senator. She had a fairly promising career before following Bernie into the void. The fact that these people can't see that getting rid of Trump is job one is an example of why they are so destructive.

They're right about the party elite. The current leadership just continues to compound past mistakes with their exclusiveness and $1000 soirées. If the Democrats weren't so blind, there would never have been an opening for a challenge. But it's business as usual.

The issue of Net Neutrality is something that will affect all of us who comment on this board. If anyone wants to make their voices heard regarding the ominous changes that threaten to take place under Pai's regime, here is a link.

Welcome to the FCC’s Electronic Comment Filing System

Anyone who's not familiar with the proposed changes, it's really worth learning more about them because these changes potentially affect everyone who uses the Internet.

Absolutely. People's eyes glaze over when you mention net neutrality but few people understand what it really means and how losing it will affect their lives.  Unless you're absolutely thrilled with your cable provider/ISP, please be informed. At the risk of sounding preachy or condescending, at its core, the issue is about whether or not ISPs are a utility. When you put it in that context, it becomes glaringly evident why it's such an important issue, and how far reaching the implications. Imagine if your electric company could charge you a basic rate for running your HVAC and refrigerator, but charged a premium for microwaves and cooking ranges or other electric devices. Another analogy I heard was imagine there's a toll road that charges different rates depending on the make of your vehicle -- lower rates for Mercedes or Lexus than for Ford and Chevy.

Do men like Biden and Sanders really believe the way to the presidency is continuing to attack Hillary Clinton or prop themselves up as saviors?. Seriously. For people who want to move on, these white men can't stop talking about it. You know I was actually proud Obama stepped forward in 2014 and acknowledged women have a tougher time than men, over black men.  Why do people like Biden want to take us back. I can respect his service and much of the heartache due to the tragedies in his life, I also remember he WROTE the disastrous Clinton Crime Bill. I also am old enough to remember how he along with the parade of white men in the senate, lambasted Anita Hill. Hearings that aired on TV and led to 6 women getting voted into the senate in 1992.

Lawd!  I'm eternally grateful my first response to this post didn't post. This will be me, in my totally diplomatically challenged fashion explaining that Bernie didn't beat Hillary. And Biden can say whatever tf he wants. Who loses to Donald Freaking Trump?  Russians/Comey or not?  She was crippled by a decades long, entirely unfair persecution.  But that was reality. It was a factor that the democratic establishment ignored and then engineered the party nomination for the one person almost half the country would refuse to vote for under any circumstances. Most of the country's voters bemoaned being forced to choose between the two candidates.  It's time to get over it. We have more immediate concerns.

Yeah. That was the full measure of my diplomacy. I know it sucks. I accept my limitations. Fire away.

Let's put it this way: the WH maid doesn't do windows, but she DOES do gossip. ;)

According to Jon Favreau and Jon Lovett, there was a huge yelling match about the highly classified info 45 shared with Russians.  It happened within earshot of White House press. So not only did 45 "leak" info to the Russians, but then proceeded to scream much of the same classified info where the press would hear.

I just offer a prayer for the poor Israeli who is currently undercover with ISIS who's been identified as A source for threats against the US.

Btw. I took an unofficial wholly unscientific poll. When asked how would you prefer to die? A) after a prolonged battle with cancer that bankrupted your family and could've been prevented were you provided with access to affordable healthcare or B) beheading.

    Beheading was the overwhelming champion.

Back during the Jowars I could never have imagined the day I would like something you wrote as much as I love this post. This just makes me want to meet you at Rodi's for an O'Douls or maybe we could share a flan in Angel Square.

Lol. I've loved you for years. Your Bernie hate made me temporarily reconsider, but I remembered that such differences are temporary. You're good people.

I appreciate you sharing this. I am going to have to put him on my podcast list. That second half on voter ID laws, voter suppression, and such was excellent and really good contributors. I've already subscribed to the Brennan center newsletter after listening. There are some very sobering facts but also some reason for optimism if people keep working and paying attention to these things and actually show up to vote.  There is a great organization out there also called Voter Riders which is a national group organized to help people get the documentation they need to register and to vote.

One of the best things I learned from the podcast was even assbackward West Virginia has auto voter registration as do 38 states/and a commonwealth or two. Such a simple and reasonable solution for so much.

Im thinking of just going to churches and nursing homes and personally volunteering to drive registered voters to early voting sites. I always try to vote early in West Virginia. But I have to drive to my county seat, which is cross county. Even worse. To renew my driver's license I have to drive 45 miles.  Life in rural America. I can only imagine how daunting that must be for some people. It's just inconvenient for me.  It's a Herculean task for some.

I hope you won't feel as if this is putting you on the spot but I've come to realize that people don't always mean the same thing when using the same phrases/terms, and I am really curious what "white privilege" means to people. I know that some people take it literally and refute having any sort of advantage at all.

One of our family friends was born and raised in Compton, CA and she happens to be white. She is annoyed by people claiming she had any sort of advantages growing up since her family was poor and struggled. She's probably in her late fifties-early sixties and still doesn't see herself as having any sort of a racial advantage. It wouldn't be her fault if someone favored her over another person because of some sort of racial bias. That's not something over which she has control. What she can control are her own biases and whether or not she is complicit in the unfair treatment of other people.

I was certainly not poor. Although wealth status is a subjective thing.

I take a very very broad definition of white privilege. Most people don't have much awareness of systemic segregation and the lasting harmful effects.  Not just the personal prejudices of individuals. But Government policies. Richard Rothstein just wrote a book about the housing policies following the depression openly discriminated against African Americans, and how that impacted their long term wealth. I know that the war on drugs was another means whereby white men in power kept their heels on the throats of black people. I know mass incarceration and police brutality and the entire justice system has been part of a long standing conspiracy to deny black people equality.

Haven't read this but listened to an interview with the author on NPR. My take is if we want a real investigation into Mike Flynn and Paul Manefort's Russia connections, or anything else, we have to take back the House. Need 23 seats. Historically, in an election following a term where one party controls all branches of government, the incumbent party has lost 30+ seats in the House. So it can be done.

Eisenhower and Nixon would both be considered Democrats today.

    Aint that the truth?!

I've reluctantly admitted that I voted Republican most of my life. I'm ashamed of that in part because the destruction of the party and its transition to some Christian variation of the Taliban began with Reagan and the Moral Majority and although I voted for Ford in my first presidential election, I voted for Reagan twice,  and H. W. Bush twice. It really wasn't until W ran for President that I finally couldn't do it anymore. That tipped the balance. In hindsight I do realize white privilege played a huge role in my resistance to accepting how much the party had changed. Oddly, when I first became politically aware, most people in my circle were Democrats, but they were that "good ol'" southern democrat variety.

Anyway, back to your original point, my positions have definitely shifted significantly since I turned 18. But not nearly as dramatically as the GOP. If Newt Gingrich and the Tea Party and now The Freedom Caucus had not shifted the party so vehemently to the right I might still be a "moderate" Republican. There is no moderation in the GOP anymore. They're soulless bastards lacking any shred of human decency and apparently incapable of informed decision making.

The healthcare industry is 1/6 of the U.S. Economy. These wastes of human flesh just passed bill that the CBO had not reviewed, and that most members of the House admit they did not read!  And on closer inspection is so much worse than most people could imagine.
