Kirkland shocks everyone with his announcement

BAY CITY CENTER

Grant is backstage with his Assistant preparing for press conference.

Assistant: I’ve just put the finishing touches on your announcement boss.

Grant: Thanks. I’ve been looking forward to this day. Have you seen Paulina?

Assistant: No sir.

Grant: I wonder where she is.

JACK SNYDER’S OFFICE

Toni Burrell walks in.

Toni: Jack.

Jack: Lieutenant. What’s going on?

Toni: I got approval. I’m taking a leave of absence.

Jack: Wow is everything okay?

Toni: I’m going to tend to my mother.

Jack: I hope everything is okay. We need ya here. You’re great to work with.

Toni: Thanks.

Toni walks outside of Jack’s office and places a phone call, and Paulina walks up behind her.

Toni: I’m coming down there. I’m gonna make sure they do their job, and find Evan’s killer, especially if Grant had something to do with it.

Paulina: Grant had something to do with what?

BACK AT BAY CITY CENTER

People file in taking their seats, as do Kirkland and Charlie.

Charlie: Your dad’s making his announcement today huh?

Kirkland (sarcastic): Yeah…good ole dad. If people knew what kind of a person he really is, I wonder if they’d vote for him.

Grant approaches the podium and the crowd applauds and pictures are taken.

Grant: Good afternoon everybody!

CAMERA PAN ON GRANT…SLOW FADE TO THEME SONG

POLICE STATION

Toni: Paulina hi.

Paulina: Hi Toni. You mentioned Grant.

Toni: I was talking about his mayoral campaign.

Paulina: He’s making his announcement. I’m gonna get down there.

Toni: Really?

Paulina: I wanna support him.

Jack walks to the door and listens.

Toni: Why would you support Grant after he had you hooked on diet pills, and your house to go up in flames?

Paulina: I’ve forgiven him for it.

Toni: Wow. You a better woman than me.

Jack: Hey ladies.

Toni: I’m gonna…take off. I’ll be in touch Jack, okay.

Jack: Good luck with everything.

Jack and Paulina walk back into Jack’s office.

Paulina: Is she leaving or something?

Jack: She’s taking a leave of absence. Her mom is sick.

Paulina: Etta Mae? Oh my I hope she’s okay.

Jack: What brings you by?

Paulina: I actually came by…to talk about Grant.

Jack: Is everything okay with you two? I caught the last bit of what Toni said about him. About what he did to you. Is it true?

Paulina: Yes it is.

Jack: How could he have done that to you?

Paulina: I had gotten fat after I had Dante, and I wanted to lose weight.

Jack: He gave you diet pills, and you got hooked, and your house burned down?

Paulina: Yeah he supplied my pills, and it almost cost me my marriage, but he’s not that kind of person anymore.

Jack: Are you sure?

Paulina: He’s been very good to me, and my son since Joe was killed.

Jack: From what I hear, Joe was a very respected officer in this department.

Paulina: He was a good husband, and a great father. I miss him, but Grant has been there for us.

Jack: That’s good Paulina, but some people can act a certain way you know, and they really never change. Did he have a lot of enemies back then?

Paulina: Only one that I know of, but he’s dead.

Jack: Who?

Paulina: Carl Hutchins.

BAY CITY CENTER

Grant is at the podium as Kirkland and Charlie watch.

Grant: Great citizens of Bay City, it’s time for a change. Time for us to Bay City forward, time for a new voice, and a new perspective. I am formally announcing that I will be running for mayor of Bay City. I pledge to run an honest and fair police department, create jobs, improve our schools, and lure businesses to our great city. It’s time to make Bay City the dynamic place I know it can be. I’ll take questions.

Kirkland stands up.

Kirkland: I have one.

Grant is shocked but plays it off…

Grant: Kirkland! That’s my son everybody.

Kirkland: How can you…possibly think that you are gonna clean up Bay City…when you are the dirtiest person I know.

Grant (smiling nervously): I’m sorry I…don’t understand.

Kirkland: You don’t understand dad? Well let me help ya out. You’re a killer. You shot my Uncle Ryan to death! You pulled every trick in the book to take me away from my mother!

Kirkland looks around.

Charlie: Kirkland stop it!

Kirkland: Come on people, do you really want this guy running your city? He’s a heartless BASTARD who doesn’t deserve to run a candy store!

Grant: Remove him!

Kirkland: Is that any way to talk to your opponent? I’m running against you.

Grant: What?

Kirkland: I’m ALSO running for mayor of Bay City…and I’m gonna take your ass out.

The crowd reacts shockingly and reporters turn to Kirkland, stealing the spotlight from Grant.

Reporter #1: Mr. Harrison did we hear right? You are going to be Grant Harrison’s opponent? Your own father?

Kirkland: That’s right, I’ll be Grant Harrison’s opponent in the upcoming mayoral election.
