  1. Some argue that it WAS undone in 2007, when Dorian and Viki were locked in the basement during Asa's funeral and Dorian said she

killed Victor. When Viki pointed out that he turned out to be alive later on, Dorian responded, "if that WAS him." She never followed up on that statement

True. But I wouldn't mind them confirming that so Victor can STAY dead in the reboot! tongue.png

  2. Actually, according to the original story, the reason for Viki's split personality was that she witnessed Victor having a fight with her and Meredith's mother, Eugenia, that caused Eugenia to fall down the stairs at Llanfair, an injury that led directly to her death. The stuff with Irene in bed with Victor was a retcon, just as the revelation of the other personalities and Viki's abuse at the hands of her own father were retcons.

You're right, Dale, it is a pretty lame explanation for her disorder. At the same time, though, I'm pretty fierce on sticking to canon, as it were. Just because it is more psychologically accurate to say her DID is the result of severe sexual trauma, that shouldn't give writers license to rewrite established history or suggest facets about a particular character who, quite frankly, wasn't originally created and/or written with those facts in mind.

Khan, I am pretty sure that the 1985 story showed the split in Viki's personality was due to her catching ol' Vic in bed with Irene, and the 1995 version had Viki having all those nightmares and recollections about Victor, one of which was him arguing with Eugenia on the stairs. Of course, the 1995 version makes much more sense.

I think there was even a 1988 version where they indicated that Niki was created when Megan was born and Victor took her away from Viki. I don't count that one. wink.png

No, you're right, Vee. I agree completely. If only because I don't want another retcon that would make the story even more complicated than it is already. I don't like the now-official explanation, but I'd rather just leave like it is.

I flip flop on this. I thought the original ending of the 1995 story was perfect in having Tori as the one who killed Victor. On the other hand, I HATED that they brought Victor back alive in 2003 and wish that could be undone somehow. Sigh.

  3. Yeah, I check it out for updates often. It's amazing some of the people he tracked down for interviews. Since OLTL was (is?) my favorite show, I am really looking forward to that book!

And speaking of updates.....here's the latest:

"One Life to Live creator Agnes Nixon on her thoughts regarding the decision to make Viki's split personality, Niki, the result of incestuous sexual abuse by Viki's father, Victor Lord:

"I had a very, very difficult father, and I based my Victor Lord on him -- and he didn’t abuse me. [Laughs] He was very unpleasant, and he spent four years of my college life telling me I had no talent as a writer, and that I had to take over his business when I graduated. I just didn’t think the abuse story was a good idea. A father’s domination of a girl child is profound -- I know it personally. I don’t think the sex aspect...well, anyway."

Hmmm...I recall several articles in which Michael Malone said that Nixon agreed that the only logical way to explain Viki's alters was sexual abuse and that she gave her blessing to the storyline. The interview with Susan Bedsow Horgan on Brandon's Buzz echoes that. I am not sure why Nixon is saying what she's saying now. I mean, up until that point, the reason for Viki's split personalities was that she walked in on Irene Manning and Victor in bed, and that's a pretty lame reason to explain how her DID started.

  4. I can't wait for this book, actually. The stuff on the FB feed alone is riveting.

  5. FauxBo/Tina make my eyes hurt.

Faux Bo! LOL!! Carl, were you watching OLTL when that story played out? I thought it was great fun. For me, it was probably the last gasp of the great Paul Rauch era. I have some old clippings from magazines and OLTL tied with Y&R for number one in the weekly ratings for the climax of that story. Do you remember the "shocking" ending of that story?wink.png

  6. That sound like the same plot of GH's Ice Princess. On GH, the ice princess was a diamond that held a formula that could freeze the world and everyone wanted it for there own use.

Not to hijack the OLTL thread with GH talk, but I actually remember the Ice Princess story to be well plotted and paced. It was a long storyline that started with the arrival of Alexandria Quartermaine in October 1980 and ended with Luke saving the world in September 1981. All was going well until they got to that island and we were introduced to the mad scientist trying to freeze the world. Up to that point, the IP story was quite a snazzy little caper story. The Solaramite story on OLTL was just an attempt to ape GH's fast paced adventure storylines, but it was a bust. The Ivan Kipling brain chip story was playing concurrently with the Solaramite story - it was a low point in the program's history, IMO.

  7. What happened?? You just placed the old pink elephant in my room. I can't sit still until I know what you are talking about!!!!!

LOL! OK, let me see if I can recall this.....Tony Lord returned to Llanview in late 1981 and he brought an associate, Georgina Whitman (originally played by Ilene Kristen!) with him. Tony had discovered that there was an alternate fuel source under Llanfair and he came back to Llanview to mine it. It was called Solaramite. Bo became Tony's partner, and because it was such of a dud of a nowhere storyline, I really can't remember what it was all about. There was something about Tony and Bo testing Solaramite in race cars filmed on location and there were bad guys who wanted the Solaramite...and...and....zzzzzzzz.

  8. What brought OLTL to D.C. in '82? Bo visited the Wall in the '90s, I believe.

Bo, a Viet Nam vet, went there to read the wall of names while he was in DC to get government approval to produce.....uh....Solaromite. Don't ask. tongue.png

  9. I was surprised by some of the comments in the 1990 review. I certainly agree it was probably one of the worst years of the show though. I will always love Eterna, Buchanan City, etc. though.

Me, too. But Badderly Island of 1990 is another story. blink.png

  10. That was an extremely harsh, yet well written review. I consider it harsh mainly because a lot of the stuff I consider gold compared to the daytime of today. Id love to have seen the same writer review the show was it was in its final years.

Was Christine or Erika playing Viki during the Masquerade Ball? I like Christina Jones, but she is Pamela to me and I can't enjoy someone outside of Gillian or Erika as Viki.

That was. A LOT to happen throughout the ball, but over a three week period, I'd imagine that to play out nicely and keep the momentum going.

Oh, that ball! I lived through that and remember thinking at the time, "WHEN is this going to end???" LOL! And yes, Christine Jones was playing Viki at the time.

  11. Those look really nice, thanks for sharing.

She mustve had the longest disappearance on a soap.

You're welcome! Funny (or not so funny) story about Shelly Burch......

In 1997, Soap Opera Digest reported that Ms. Burch had been brainwashed and joined a cult and was feared dead. I kid you not! There were no quotes from any authorities or former cast mates. Yet, I was still worried, as I thought Ms. Burch to be a lovely and kind woman based on interviews she did. Well, in 1999, I was fortunate enough to attend the OLTL Fan Club event, and I asked Mr. Bob Woods directly about Ms. Burch. He shook his head in disgust and said that he too had read that story, but was happy to report that Ms. Burch was alive and well and had never joined a cult. He confirmed that she IS a nice and warm woman, and thanked me for asking about her. If you are interested in seeing for yourself that she is indeed still living her one life to live, check out her website. The woman still looks amazing! http://shellyburch.org/gallery.php
