I had a job change and I won't be able to fly through the episodes like I have been. So, I may never get to the 800's. But- Sophia and Pamela should be enemies.1

Yes it is a fun scene, but there are no long term story consequences for what occurred, and as I recall, the Lockridges never find out that CC and Dylan were rigging the casino

You have to rewatch the episode when Cruz reenacts the murder (complete with everyone getting dressed in formal wear for some reason) to find out the real killer.

Right, and it's ... Sophia. You mean, they left clues in espisode 217 pointing to the fact it wasn't she to be revealed much later?!? I am getting more excited and confused at the same time...

I think it is a shame that Sophia never got to get justice from Minx for switching her child at birth and making her think she shot her son.

I get that Minx 1.0 was treated like a sacred cow, but by the time Minx 2.0 rolled into town Sophia should have smacked her so hard that the magical spring water couldn't save her face.

TIME OUT! What!?! You mean Sophia didn't shoot Channing?!?

Remember, I only watched up to 1989 the first go around, so I wasn't aware if they continued with this storyline past that. I knew about the Eden/Lisa thing vaguely. Wow, this just gave me another reason to continue watching

SB truly was a soap of the 1980s. I was rewatching a few early scenes and always enjoyed Jade consoling drunk Amy at the State Street Bar before Brick came in and had to rescue Amy from a lecherous patron. "Dancing in the Dark" by The Boss was playing in the background, to be immediately followed by "If This Is It" by Huey Lewis and The News. It tickles me to remember that those songs were brand new then and not the pop classics they are now. 😊

There was a scene around the same time when Christie has her Walkman on and dancing to Madonna's Material Girl at the Capwell mansion. And then another scene where Kelly borrowed some of Ted's records and one of them was Bruce Springsteen's big albums at the time.

    Now I remember!

Hey, maybe someone here will know this. Was Always on my Mind a soap opera couples theme song? I feel like it was, but didn't find confirmation

I can't help you with that one, but I've been wanting to learn to play "The Change in Me is You" on the piano. I've been looking for the sheet music all over the internet but I can't find it. I can play the first few notes though

  5. The mid-80s seemed to be a changing time for soaps. Santa Barbara and Loving began their runs and 2 legendary soaps ended - Edge of Night and Search for Tomorrow. I think the competition was fierce at this time, there were 12-14 soaps on the air.  From everything I've seen on the air in this time period, Santa Barbara was definitely the more modern of them all. The competition definitely caught up to it by the end of the decade

  6. So it took more digging than I thought it would but I found JAN on Edge

    https://youtu.be/-VebBI-Us-M

One thing for sure, he was on SB just a few months later and we never saw him in a turtleneck!

His acting seems different here. I still maintain that he studied Nicolas Coster to appear more like his son which he accomplished so well, it really is a shame SB didn't use him properly.

Until SB, I only knew him from Killer Klowns From Outer Space 😂

So, I did not know this, but I just quickly Wikipedia-ed him, and apparently he was on Loving and Edge of Night just before it was canceled. I guess Santa Barbara lured him away from Edge? Going to search for some YouTube videos now as his acting was already pretty decent back in 1984.

It goes without saying that unlike Robin's contract being extended after Princess Bride, JAN did not get the same treatment when he took time off of SB to make his magnum opus, Hunk.

Is that what he is primarily known for to non-SB audiences? I have always thought it was Baywatch and Sheena (it ran on WB in the early 00s). He was also on "24"  for a couple of seasons in the mid 2000s which was a big-deal show back then.

  9. I actually came to GH to watch Lane and Nancy together around 2004? It was during a hotel fire there which was supposed to be a huge deal. They quickly got rid of Lane, nothing happened... I actually probably watched for another year after that right through the end of Tamara Braun's stint.

I'm so glad that someone killed Madeline Capwell before I had to... What an overwhelmingly annoying character.

I'm a bit envious how fast you're speeding through the show, I gave up on trying to catch up with you, I'm still at episode 325ish.

The one thing I've noticed is how much I have forgotten and how much I still remember. Some dialogue definitely was not appreciated by me back then, so it's a good thing that I am re-living the show.

I have also started watching Virgin River based on someone's recommendation here, because they said it's a modern day soap opera done in the Netflix style, and it is very much so, I can recommend for whoever's looking for something new

  11. Have you all seen this video on how a typical soap episode is made? It's from about a year before ATWT was canceled.

I gained some insights into how challenging this can be. ATWT was moved from its more expensive Manhattan studios to Brooklyn about 10 years before it was cancelled. I was struck by how small each room looks and how close the camera is to the actors. I feel like soaps filmed in California have much bigger studios and don't feel as cramped.

Not much of them out there, but here's a clip of Kelly and Connor:

Wow, this is.. not good. I wonder if they were just going through the motions at this point since they had already known they had just been cancelled and wondering what's next for them

I need to discuss my biggest problem from the past few weeks, and it's a big one: ever since Santana and Cruz on the beach, James Taylor's Fire and Rain has been stuck in my head. And I want it OUT!!!!

You can look for playlists of biggest songs of each year on Spotify or Apple music whichever one you subscribing to. I just recently went through all of the number ones from 1989 to 1991. I am going to continue

  12. OK! The detective I was speaking of was Connor McCabe who was quite prominently featured in SB's final months. I think he was sent from Washington DC to investigate the murder of whoever the person was who abused BJ. I might sneak in a few later episodes just to see what I'll be looking at as the sun sets on Santa Barbara, so to speak

There were some stories I enjoyed in the 90s. It was only the final year where I struggle to come up with something with the exception of Mason and Julia battling for the judgeship and trying to have another kid. I liked everything involving Robert and Quinn in the 90s. Flame and Angela were good additions to the canvas as well. Refocusing on the Lockridges.

From the scenes I have seen with nuWarren, he seemed a lot older than J.A.N. would have been had he remained in the role (I think he was already a star on Baywatch at that point). I just remembered Jack Wagner on B&B as Nick Morone who was married to Bridget at the time which gave off a certain ick vibe, so when I retroactively watched some of his scenes as nuWarren on SB, I was just not buying it. Again, I am reiterating what someone else stated here - they should have thrown all their money at Louise Sorel to remain as Augusta. I think I read that she hated the fact they turned Augusta into an alcoholic.

Interestingly, SB was sold to a lot of foreign stations, it is known to have had a huge following in Germany, France, Italy, Russia, many former Eastern European countries. I believe the only other US soap that was as popular was / is B&B.

I have always wondered that SB must have made some additional money that other domestic soaps that weren't shown overseas didn't make. And wondered if that money could have gone towards beefing up the show to avoid cancellation. But maybe all these foreign contracts were made through New World and not NBC? Of course, the 3 to 4:00 p.m. time slot is problematic and many syndicates pretty much had dropped it by then kind of like how they did it with GL later on. I hate the fact that the 4 to 5:00 p.m. hour wasn't used very well by many syndicates. I just know for a fact that I would have never tuned into local news until at least 5:00. I don't remember now but was the 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. hour basically the Oprah hour starting in the late '80s?

  14. Dang, I mean, I have always known the show became unrecognizable in its last couple of years. I am going to have to suspend a lot of my past history knowledge and use all my will power to sit through the whole run this time around!

Is there ANYTHING I should be looking forward to it if I loved 1984-1989? Anything of redeemng value that gave a glimmer of hope? I am prepared for all the subsequent recasts and all new characters added later.  I saw extracts from the later episodes and was kinda intrigued by the new detective guy circa 1992. Was that any good?

What was your favorite (least hated?) story arc from 1990-1993?

I think that he was someplace else and people think he was about to get SORASed, but it didn't happen.

I would be very interested in when Johnny Wallace grew up and discovered that he was really a king. That could have been great.

Remind me, did Brick leave town with Johnny after his relationships post-Amy didn't work out? They didn't go to New Staitland, did they?

No, Justin Gocke (RIP) faded out around 1991 or 1992-ish. Around the time Gina gave birth to Channing III and married Lionel.

If you remember/know, how did they work around the fact that she wasn't able to have any more children due to her fall in 1985? I guess the medical science always advances!

  17. 9 minutes ago, Marissa Gallant said:

Yeah, but soaps aren't known for being good at Math. Sophia was a starlett in the late 60's. Then she became the stepmother to Marcello, who was a kid in the early 40's, who was angry at CC for something that happened in '44 at the latest. CC was an adult when that happened, at least 42 years ago. But CC and Lionel are supposed to be the same age- but only sometimes. And by the time Minx found the fountain of youth and became 30 some years younger, it simply no longer made sense. 😀😀

And also, this is the only show where children didn't get sucked into weird Star Trek Time Vortexes where they go in as children and come out teenagers.

Did the Brandon character stay on with the last portrayer until January 1993?  When did the practice of SORASing gain steam? I believe DAYS was the greatest abuser of this practice. Y&R SORASed the Newman children in the early 90s

  18. The rumor mill at the time also spun the theory that Kristen Meadows was supposed to have been a Janice recast as the original actress was written out by then. One of the mags had a "Look who's back!" headline and supposedly the bringing-back-Janice plans were scrapped and a new role was created for Kristen Meadows. I will see if I can dig up any more info, perhaps with an interview with her

I got nothing. I thought my last post vanished but it reappeared. Now I have to type something.

I do wish they had gone full on Sophia dumps CC and runs to Lionel.

I don't. One of the reasons I can't stand B&B is because they make it look like they're only five people in Los Angeles! What's wrong with bringing in new people who can make great partners for current on screen stars? The constant back and forth on that show is a huge ick factor and I would never watch

Speaking of B&B, the show premiered in 1987 and by 1989-1990 it was hugely successful. I do think it contributed to taking away some of the ratings that SB was trying to capitalize on that point and helped stall its momentum. I mean, the whole changing of the show writers issue did destroy SB at the end, but I'm sure many viewers fled for B&B even though they weren't in the same time slot

I copy something I posted here months ago. It is from a Princess Bride article.

The Princess Bride’ required a 4 month shooting schedule on location throughout England and Ireland. And the time of filming the movie, Robin Wright was playing Kelly Capwell, one of the heroines of soap opera ‘Santa Barbara’. In exchange for allowing her time off to film the movie, they required her to extend her contract by almost a year. Robin wanted to leave the soap in July 1987, but then she was chained until June 1988.

“That wasn’t a fair trade,” Robin said, “but it was worth it. My agents and managers decided that I should agree to anything, to work Saturdays, to kiss their butts for the next nine months, whatever it took to get out and do the film.”

Years later, in 1992, Robin also talked about this. She explained: “I had a clause in my two-year TV contract that let me out for four weeks once a year to do films. But no film gets shot in four weeks and I did 3 movies, so every extra week extended approximately a month or two onto my contract.

In December 2015, Cary Elwes also addressed this subject: “I consider Robin a very dear friend. Everyone knows what an extraordinary talent she is, so we were lucky to get her on the film. She was doing ‘Santa Barbara’ at the time, and they wouldn’t let her out of the contract so Norman Lear, our producer, and Rob Reiner worked very hard to get them to release her.”

Again, thank you for this info! It gives me a new perspective when watching Robin Wright on SB. Probably towards the end of her stint on the show, she couldn't wait to get out after all the extensions. I can see how later on in life she would not want to talk about it or look back at it as something that, although gave her start, also prevented her from flying with her wings wide open. In the grand scheme of things, SB was just 4 years of her life from ages 18 to 22, but to us, watchers of the show, it might seem like a greater portion of her life because of how much of the storyline material the Kelly character is part of.

  21. 18 minutes ago, j swift said:

The odd thing about these stories that show "made" Robin stay longer is that it negates the idea that she had representation.  She had just appeared in one of the biggest movies of the year, one suspects than any agent or manager would work hard to get her into a position to make another film.  The whole story never added up for me.  Not that I doubt that she had a contract, and New World made her stay throughout the length of the contract, but the notion that time was added on without her consent always seemed fishy.

As for how SB would have been different if she stayed, given her track record of poor working relationships with male co-stars, I don't think she could have ever been in a supercouple.

Interesting perspective. Was her relationship with Mark Arnold very tense after he replaced Dane? I wonder if the writers wrote him out to accommodate her. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it
