  1. I'm about two thirds of the way through the book and am loving it!  As a couple of others have mentioned there are at least 2 people in the book who mistakenly say that Daniel Hugh Kelly left Ryan's Hope for Hardcastle & McCormick.  He actually left because he got a role in the NBC drama Chicago Story which unfortunately only lasted for 13 episodes.  Hardcastle & McCormick came along the following year.  Then of course there was I Married Dora.......

Afton wasn't exactly queen of the suffragettes but the audience was somewhat invested in her long-suffering loyalty to Cliff Barnes, the premiere goat-faced fool and anime pervert of '80s primetime drama. Within an episode or two though she is gone and fully replaced in Cliff's life by another comely sexbomb, Mandy Winger, played by Deborah Shelton, last seen as a largely mute male fantasy dream girl for the hapless protagonist of Brian De Palma's classic film Body Double. There is a reason Shelton has maybe five to ten lines tops in that movie before getting slaughtered by a power drill, and Season 8 demonstrates it beautifully. Now, less than halfway into the season Mandy has simply replaced Afton in virtually all aspects of story: Accompanying Cliff to his sister's house to cluck over Pam, agreeing blithely to Cliff's latest doomed scheme against J.R. who she will surely fùck, etc. The only major change is hair color and less personality.

I know that right around the time Audrey Landers left Dallas she landed the role of Val in the film adaptation of "A Chorus Line" so I always wondered if that was the reason for her rather abrupt departure.  As for Deborah Shelton I liked her a lot on the show she did the year before she joined Dallas (The Yellow Rose) so I was happy to see her on Dallas, although I never saw Mandy as a strong character.  Your reference to her performance in Body Double made me remember that all of her dialogue in that film was dubbed by actress Helen Shaver!

I think Bobby Blue has left town at this point, I’ve seen episodes with him and I must say I think Lisa/Bobby could have been something MAJOR and Bobby and Viki/Niki are fantastic. There was also a little schemer named Stella, who clashed with Lisa and tried to bring Bobby back into trouble.

I completely agree that Bobby and Lisa could have been something major because I felt the chemistry between Blair Underwood and Laura Carrington was off the charts.  I always wondered why Bobby disappeared so suddenly, whether it was Underwood's choice or Paul Rauch's.  Same with Laura Carrington, the last scene I remember of her was Lisa visiting her father in the hospital after she was rescued from her kidnapping.  I'm not sure if she ever appeared again or was even mentioned.  Lisa and Josh just seemed to disappear without a trace.

  4. Here in Michigan our Detroit affiliate aired Edge Of Night at 10:30 in the morning right up until the final episode.  I don't know how it did in the ratings but I have to imagine it would have done better had it followed General Hospital.

The ABC actors were always willing to spend their weekends with Joyce Becker meeting fans at mall appearances and softball games in the local markets.  Any idea how much the actors got paid for those ?  Those appearances were total fuel for soap fever.

In the Jeff Giles book Llanview in the Afternoon, Barbara Treutelaar who played Didi on One Life To Live said that they were paid $1000 and put up first class in hotels for those mall appearances.

  5. Sadly, another One Life To Live actress has been lost to cancer.  Bronwen Booth, who originated the role of Andy in 1989 passed away at the age of 59.  I loved her portrayal of Andy and her pairing with Leonard Stabb's Hunter and was sorry when they were two of the dozen or so actors dismissed when Linda Gottlieb took over.  When Andy returned a few years later played by Wendee Pratt, Andy was pretty much a brand new character and bore little resemblance to Bronwen's Andy.  Deepest condolences to her family.

With all the departures in season 10, I don't understand why they didn't hold on to Jamie and Jack. They were Ewings and being torn between Ewing and Barnes lines. Jamie had a romantic connection with Cliff which blurred the line of loyalty she had to either side. Jack had a stake in Ewing which was compromised by April coming into the picture. It would have kept the feud going with both Ewings and Barnes in several directions.

It was odd that Jack was written out after his ex-wife April came aboard but it was no surprise that Jamie was.  I don't know why the show wanted her gone so badly but someone obviously did.  That poor thing was killed off TWICE!

  7. When the CW version of Dynasty began I thought the first few episodes were dreadful but I stuck with it and I think the turning point was around episode 7 the Thanksgiving episode.  They really amped up the crazy and from then on the tone of the show turned to a lot more comedic one liners and campy storylines and I was hooked.  It ended up being one of my favorite shows and I looked forward to it every week.

  8. One bright spot to the whole Lynne Moody departure debacle is that after being killed off she ended up winning the Soap Opera Digest Award for Supporting Actress in a Prime Time Soap and I remember her acceptance speech, she was very happy to win because she said she didn't think she would.  I was really happy that she did too.

I remember reading somewhere she was vocal in the press about how her character was being written and they decided to kill her off. Too bad. She was a good actress and it kind stunted the Williams family storylines.

I remember that article with Lynne Moody.  It was in TV Guide and she said it was frustrating being given so little to do.  And then a few short months later she's killed off.  The cast appeared on a talk show the next season and I remember an audience member asking Larry Riley about that TV Guide article and he said he hadn't read it but if she had said that then the show wouldn't keep her from going somewhere to be happy.  It seemed to be a little shade throwing which then made me wonder just how well the two of them got along.

  10. I always thought that Cole's wife Linda and Melissa should have had some Krystle and Alexis catfights like those two did in the pond or the mud but the show never gave Linda anything substantial to do which was a shame because I saw the actress on a Murder, She Wrote episode after she left FC and she played a vixen and played her quite well I might add.

  11. Claudia actually did try to escape the La Mirage fire on Dynasty albeit off-screen.  It took something like 11 or 12 episodes of season 7 for Blake to be exonerated of starting the fire but eventually Jackie recounted To Krystle how she saw Claudia open the door of her room and then the flames shot out from behind her.  That's how they were able to determine that Claudia started the fire.  I hated that plot device because of a) how badly the show treated Pamela Bellwood who had just given birth and b) for killing Claudia in such a grisly manner especially considering the fact that she was an original cast member.

That's lovely to hear. I wish someone could interview her about her time at OLTL. I still don't know if Brenda even had an exit.

She is interviewed in Jeff Giles' book Llanview In The Afternoon.  I don't recall Brenda ever getting even an exit scene.  I think she just stopped appearing.  BTW if you want to see her in a different role she did a movie called Troma's War shortly before her OLTL time.  She's a plane crash survivor on an island where she and the other survivors battle terrorists trying to destroy America.  She kicks some major butt in it!

I know some fans didn't care for the first Andy, but I liked her more than Wendee Pratt, even if she and her stories were generic. Beyond the Hunter relationship I think she spent most of her time pining after the hunky priest who was pining after Gabrielle.

I really liked the first Andy, Bronwen Booth and loved her with Leonard Stabb's Hunter.  I was so furious when she returned alone and Hunter was made out to be an abuser.  Wendee Pratt's version of the character was so different that it seemed like a completely different character altogether.

  14. Regarding the Ivan Kipling storyline, the other girl living in the house with Cassie, Rob, Danny, ect. was Annie Barnes who was played by Rebecca Schaeffer, the young actress who later starred on My Sister Sam and was murdered by an obsessed fan in 1989.  Annie and Danny left town together in the fall of 1985.  When he returned the following year I don't believe he ever mentioned Annie again.  I also remember Giulietta, although I don't remember how she was written off the show.

  15. I watched King's Crossing and have been trying in vain for decades to see the episodes again (as well as its predecessor Secrets Of Midland Heights) but have had no luck.  Can't even find the opening credits anywhere.  The only thing I've ever found are these few promos online.

Edit:  I stand corrected.  Someone posted the opening credits on youtube!

Why did they get dismissed? I was hooked into all of them as well just in those first two episodes.

I don't know what the reasoning was behind their exits.  With Jennifer Ashe and Ann Williams I guess once the story with Garth was over the show decided to move away from that particular topic.  With Patricia Kalember it always seemed like they didn't know what to do with her.  As for Shannon Eubanks who knows.  They also recast John Shearin's Roger Forbes with Peter Brown.  But there always seemed to be a lot of behind the scenes turmoil and abrupt cast changes during the entire run of the show anyway.  BTW, I loved Pamela Blair's portrayal of Rita Mae.  I wish she had been on the show longer.  She was great.

  17. I remember Soap Opera Digest doing a review of Loving a year or two into its run and in it they said it was unfortunate that the show chose to dismiss talent like Jennifer Ashe, Shannon Eubanks, Patricia Kalember and Ann Williams.  I felt the same way (although I did like Callan White in the roll of Ann).  All four of them were terrific in their roles.

  18. I do remember watching it.  It was just a summer series.  I can't remember a single storyline from it but I do remember I didn't care for it at all which is surprising because being a Gloria Monty show you would think it would have been great since she had done her magic on GH.  But my limited recollection of it is that it was a snoozefest.

  19. I bought The Yellow Rose on DVD a few years ago.  I loved the way it started with the Champions vs. Jeb Hollister.  Then two thirds of the way through the season it switches formats to the self contained format and I was bored silly.  What a waste of a great cast.

  20. Network execs never learned their lesson about youth oriented shows on Saturday nights.  In 1980 CBS put Secrets Of Midland Heights on Saturdays at 10 pm where it quickly died.  So a year later when the producers took some of the actors and put them in a new setting as new characters in King's Crossing ABC did the same idiotic thing and put the show on Saturday nights at 8 pm where it died just as quickly as its predecessor.
