If she hadn't starred on Santa Barbara, she wouldnt have gotten the part in The princess Bride.  Sometimes the snobbery of some actor astounds me.

Why do you say that? because I read part of a book written by Janet Hirshenson and Jane Jenkins (casting directors of The Princess Bride). And they said at first they didn’t want to meet robin wright because among other things she was on a soap opera and probably would have pick really bad habits in the acting department

So who ponied up the bucks and/or dished out the blackmail to keep Robin around one extra year? Reading that interview, I'm picturing her making tally marks on the dressing room wall.

I copy this from a website:

In 1986, Robin Wright was also offered the leading role in ‘Dirty Dancing’ but she had to turn it down because the filming was at the same time that Rob Reiner’s movie.

In fact, ‘The Princess Bride’ required a 4 month shooting schedule on location throughout England and Ireland. And the time of filming the movie, Robin Wright was playing Kelly Capwell, one of the heroines of soap opera ‘Santa Barbara’. In exchange for allowing her time off to film the movie, they required her to extend her contract by almost a year. Robin wanted to leave the soap in July 1987, but then she was chained until June 1988.

“That wasn’t a fair trade,” Robin said, “but it was worth it. My agents and managers decided that I should agree to anything, to work Saturdays, to kiss their butts for the next nine months, whatever it took to get out and do the film.”

Years later, in 1992, Robin also talked about this. She explained: “I had a clause in my two-year TV contract that let me out for four weeks once a year to do films. But no film gets shot in four weeks and I did two movies, so every extra week extended approximately a month or two onto my contract.”

In December 2015, Cary Elwes also addressed this subject: “I consider Robin a very dear friend. Everyone knows what an extraordinary talent she is, so we were lucky to get her on the film. She was doing ‘Santa Barbara’ at the time, and they wouldn’t let her out of the contract so Norman Lear, our producer, and Rob Reiner worked very hard to get them to release her.”

I’m watching on youtube this era of the show (April-May 1986) and I have to say all the storylines are so good.

Kelly with crazy Dylan, Eden with crazy Kirk, Mason and Mary with Mark, Sophia has cancer.

I don’t remember other time where all Santa Barbara stories were this great. I’m enjoying it so much.

Some episodes are so fast that the pacing look like a primetime soap.

  4. Love Robin Wright as Kelly. Much more in this second viewing. Jeffrey and Kell are fantastic. I didn't love them as much when I saw the series as a child. BUt now I think they're so fresh together.

And I agree with you that Ted is so anoying in these episodes. I cannot stand him.

I like Todd Mckee, but the writing of him in the story of Hayley's rape is so bad.

That doesn't mean I like Jake. I think Ric Edwards is a wooden actor.

  5. I enjoyed two stories with Michael. The one with Julia in the convent and the Laura Asher/Leo Mitchell one.

But I never like Michael in particular and found him so boring.

Sometimes Santa Barbara look obsessed with some people and didn’t care for others more interesting.

For me people like Michael or Cain Garver should have leave the show before they did. They lasted so much.

For example, Cain was an important character with the Eden/Elena storyline. I didn’t like him but he was totally necessary for the plot.

But, why he continued after that? Cain should have never been important post Eden story.

He lasted so much. Also, I like Ally Walker so I wish she was paired with other and not Cain.

  6. I never like Santana, but my opinion has changed now thanks to Ava Lazar.

For me she’s the best Santana and a completely different character that Santana from 1985 an on.

I never knew Ava because I didn’t watch the first episodes when I was a child. I began watching with the Carnation Killer story.

But now I’m watching it (I’m in the episodes before the earthquake) and she is one of my favorite characters from 1984.

With Ava Lazar, I really root for her. Once she was fired, never like the role of Santana.

I still need to understand why the Dobson fire her. This was one of their bigger mistakes, I think.

I guess Gina Gallego version become so weak when she was between Eden and Cruz.

  7. in my opinion, Marcy Walker had the best couple, but Robin Wright was the best actress from that show. I've been seeing episodes from 1986 1988 and I'm really impressed.

She's fantastic as Kelly. I cannot understand why some people prefer Carrington Garland. She is not bad but Robin is a master acting class compared to CG.

  8. Thanks for sharing these! Seeing these brought back a lot of memories. I haven't heard "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" in many years so it was a treat to hear it again. Plus, the clips brought back memories of my late aunt Mary. She was an amazing lady who worked with Rupert Ravens' (Danny) father at the Rutgers Medical Center back in the early 80s. Truly, thank you so much.

New video clip -music. Love this song.

  9. Little tidbit about McKee...TVMegasite has posted that Todd McKee will have an appearance on May 22 as Jake MacClaine. It will be nice to see him around, a shame he doesn't appear more often....

Did you saw the episode? I'm interested if Todd has some scenes or only a second. I like him so much as Ted in SB even if he was usually underused.

  10. I know this sounds mean but I found Julie Ronnie to be one of the original cast's least charismatic performers. Why they kept her and got rid of Dane Witherspoon and Ava Lazar is a mystery.

What other actors don't you like from the beginning of SB?

IMO the man who is playing John Perkins is not doing a good job. He's so angry and exaggerated.

And Melissa Reeves or Brennan is not very good either & I also think Robin Wright was OK, but she's much better one or 2 months after the beginning.

  11. Thanks for the link.

It was a great and unusual interview.

I agree about what she says about Santana. I wish she would have stayed. I wonder how different would have been Santana's arc if she played the role.

Regarding the storyline of Brandon, I am 100 team Santana when Ava Lazar played the role.

But with Gina Gallego, I am 100 team Gina Capwell because I cannot stand Santana's character.
