  1. Yeah that was a 1964 ep of PP with Patricia Breslin and Paul Langton playing siblings Laura Brooks and Leslie Harrington. And yes just heard Pat Breslin (Mrs. Art Modell for football fans) died the same day, Oct 12th as the ep aired.

  2. Those 'madness' stories that Another World did with Alice and All My Children did with Erica were direct rip offs of the Leslie Brooks mental hospital storyline on Y&R in 1974. Alice had been through a lot, but I never bought a nervous breakdown for that character. In Susan's case, she was pregnant with Liza Huber in real life and they needed to write her off. And don't get me started on AMC ripping off alcoholic Kaye Chancellor with Phoebe Tyler....

  3. The unstable Vietnam vet was Mitch Farmer who was in love with Jill and he held up in the Grant home with Jill. Jill was trying to get him to turn himself in. My two older teenage sisters loved two couplings on soaps at that time - Phil and Tara, and Jill and Mitch. I can't understand Somerset writing Jill and Mitch out to this day. I thought Susan MacDonald was too important as the heroine. Oh well...

  4. I remember Jacquie taped a scene where she was reciting a letter she'd written to Steve, and then seeing Steve's reaction to the letter. I believe they wrote her off to Paris(?). The year she was gone, I remember her name was still in the credits for a long time. Robin Strasser appeared on a local talk show in my hometown and she was inundated with questions about 'Alice' and when she would return and she indicated she would be back. It's kind of funny to think the horrible reputation that assholes Rauch and Lemay gave Courtney that she at one time, left the biz to be a wife and mother and it was only the mountain of mail begging for Alice to come back and marry Steve, that got her back and God knows what they promised her to make it easy for her, and yet later they pegged her as this power hungry star. It seems NBC/P&G was desperate to have her back at almost any cost.

I should have said the rep given to Courtney LATER by Rauch and Lemay, not at the time she returned in 1971.

  5. LOL Carl about Jacquie/Jim. I thought they were an attractive couple and it was quite a boon for AW to snag Douglas. I'm sure he was approached to play Steven for RTPP but I recall (he was VERY press shy) he didn't want his family on the West Coast and had moved them East for a normal schooling/life etc. I thought Joe Gallison was excellent as Steven on RTPP, in fact Gallison along with Joel Crothers was probably one actor who never failed to be great in any soap role. I think too that Alice and Eliot started to get some buzz as a couple. Remember the short wig Jacquie originally wore as Alice in NYC? I don't think I've ever seen pictures of her that way and she used a different last name. I remember getting an instant lesbian vibe between Iris and Louise when they showed up too. For some reason, McKinsey to me seemed to be non sexual in both her Iris and Alexandra soap roles.

  6. PP The Next Generation was a DISASTER.

No Matthew Carson; he had a sex change and now he's Kelly Carson!

Steven Cord is now Martin Peyton's son, completely obliterating the Steven is Catherine Peyton's illegitimate son angle. Makes no sense.

Rita is back in the picture, ignoring the more plausible Murder in PP.

Allison is found AGAIN and a third version of her whereabouts is presented. Then she's killed off, lol.

Sorry if anyone considers these spoilers. The whole stupid movie was a spoiled.

On Barbara Parkins' facebook page there was an attempt by her agent to call for an all new PP, which unfortunately those people wanted to use the basis of PP: TNG as a template. The only faithful to the original was Return To Peyton Place, which of course no one can see.

  7. Carl I remember Lynne Adams' first go round as Leslie Jackson. She was not necessarily pretty but she was fiesty. I always liked Fran Myers better as Peggy. I think Barbara Rodell made the role her own and it's really her I remember most as Leslie. Lynne went on to play Amy on Secret Storm and I really liked her in that role. I think she and David Ackroyd had great chemistry...and then Jada Rowland shows up at the 1972 anniversary party, having spent all her money in Europe and she needed a job..and voila she was stunningly back as Amy. Lynne then exercised her right(?) and re-claimed Leslie Norris from Barbara. I don't think fans were that happy about Lynne returning. Barbara's Leslie had married Mike Bauer. Barbara had a vogueish beauty as Leslie and I don't know, it was jarring to have Lynne back. But gradually she won me over again. Their stories were kind of stupid - worrying about Hope, etc. but then Victoria Ballenger showed up (Carol Teitel) and now Leslie has her mother while her father is kvetching. That was good stuff. Freddie missing during the fishing trip - they couldn't kill off Freddie could they, and have Mike blamed?? More good stuff. So I was shocked the show decided to kill off Leslie. Adams and Stewart were finally gelling as the future tentpoles. Again, I think the idea of Mike being free to have romances was enticing stuff to play out. I just think Stewart emotionally wasn't into any of the actresses - with the exception of Lezlie Dalton. I guess the ratings got a shot up, but there was a void and Steve Jackson was kind of relegated to the background at the hospital. Steve and Bert remained close but he was such a great character. I wish in later years Rick Bauer had mentioned his grandfather.

  8. Thanks Carl - love that clip. Something about Toni (maybe her voice?) reminds me of Sharon Tate. Considering how Y&R was heralded as starting the youth movement in soaps, I think both LOL with Tess, Bill, Sally, Jamie and Kate were prominent in the late 60's and LIAMST with Mia, iris, Mark, Laura etc. were great early 20's characters in soaps.

  9. Love that Donna/David cover. My God that was chemistry and they re-united three times after the end of LIAMST, playing a married couple on The Love Boat, Medical Center and two Naval officers on Hawaii Five O.

Does anyone remember Joan McMongale(sp) who played Holly McAllistar at the end? That actress was in about 100 commericals before, during and after LIAMST. She had a sort of soccer mom(they didn't call it that then) look about her, very wholesome, unthreatening but pretty.

  10. Well Suzie Kaye Stone was described by Diana Douglas in her book, as a constant pot smoker who never performed well. Or something to that effect. Angel had the hot story at the time of cancellation. Angel was dying, Peter was destroyed but I don't think anyone else knew except Betsy. It was heartbreaking. I think Suzie Kaye's popularity soared at the end. Angel had made tons of mistakes and felt she was being punished so the audience embraced her. To me, it was like a lot of Love Story inspired storylines -kill off 1/2 half of a loving couple. I mentioned Bill Prentiss, but would add Cindy Clark Matthews, Meredith Lord Wolek etc. We didn't get to see Angel pass away, so maybe they found a cure??

  11. Bibi had gotten pregnant (with Samantha Mathis) while on EON and after the baby was born, she didn't return but took the part of Iris. I think CBS may have handpicked her. That was January(?) 1971 I believe. Leslie left in December 1970, Donna was gone Sept 1970 and Birney June 1970 if I'm remembering correctly. A contigent of Edge fans wanted Bibi on EDGE because they liked her with Donald May, who had not quite yet achieved the super couple status with Maeve McGuire.

Bibi was very good at Iris - more grounded. She played big sister to Laura. I especially loved the friendship between Betsy and Iris. These two would sit around and dis the others, especially Helen who Iris didn't seem too fond of.

  12. Dayplayer Mia Farrow cutting her hair was scandalous at the time. I was just a kid and I was devastated(!) lol. It made the evening news!!! There were rumours she was getting back at Sinatra for not inviting her to a 50th birthday party for him that aired on CBS, that she wanted to emulate a nun(!) and that she was irritated by Barbara Parkins for constantly playing with her hair, so that's why she cut it(that's in Tatum O'Neal's book). I think Mia may have thought the show would have fired her then, to free her up to be with Sinatra. They wanted her to wear a wig and she refused so finally they wrote the 'cut' in the story as part of Allison's mental breakdown. David Canary was playing her physio Russ Gehring and she argues with him, then the next scene she shows up in Dr. Rossi's office with the cut.

Barbara Parkins dated Ryan O'Neal, Adam West, David Hedison, Eddie Fisher and it was in all the fan mags. She was described as being unluckyk in love.

Chris Connelly and Pat Morrow dated. Both Catholics, it was hinted that Pat wouldn't put out for Chris and that broke them up!

There was a real division in the last season when the Russells, the Miles (the black family) were introduced. Some of the older cast members refused to be in storylines with the newbies which gave the show a real disjointed feel at the end.

  13. There was a You Tube vid for a time that had a LIAMST episode centering on Julie, Ricky, Helen and Tom. Julie had Ricky over for dinner and Helen and Julie went at it over custody. I think Zaslow was in it, along with Judson Laire. It has never re-surfaced but it was a great treat to see that storyline.

  14. You are right - Jennifer was hardly famous for anything, but she played the heroine and was first billed after Prinz left. I remember the cast crawl and originally Dr. Julie Franklin was listed first, then they just stopped that and had the announcement 'Starring Rosemary'. To this viewer, it just seemed very strange to give that status to Joan Copeland. Thinking back to the soap swapping that went on after Reinholt was fired from AW and offered the Doctors, I wonder if the thought was ever to put him on How. I would guess not considering Rauch was lusting after How's spot for the hour long AW and the die was cast.

..and I say that about Reinholt because he was a 'name' who might have lured viewers to How,

  15. I don't know if I buy that Joan Copeland would 'assume' Rosemary's position after she left. It makes no sense. Monica was not a matriarch, she had no real story of her own. She was most famous for being Mariliyn Monroe's former sister in law! I loved what I have seen of her on Search, she was chic and catty where Jo was always sure and steady, but in the credits Jennifer Harmon was billed first as Chris Kirby. It just seemed a stunt to appease Ms. Copeland - and her agent.

  16. I thought it was cool that How had a Jewish family and I loved the Chris/Fran friendship. Tricia O'Niell was glamorous and cool as Joan, but all Joan seemed to do was wait for Peter to come home and give him a drink. The character had potential because we saw Joan's restlessness.

Rosemary Prinz was good as Julie Franklin, but I would sometimes watch with my mother and all she could lament was 'I wish she was back as Penny' - it bugged her more that Peter Brandon (who played her bro on ATWT of course) was on How as Terry Courtland.

I can't fault Lin Bolen's idea, this soap was created with the housewife/career woman in mind. I think it copped out. Chris and Larry should never have re-married. Michael Landrum was replaced - why? He was a fairly good actor and a good looking guy. He looked like a LARRY. Lynn Lowry had some of that Jaime Lyn Bauer sultriness and she provided the stark contrast to Chris Kirby.

And there was the inexplicable switch from Prinz's departure where she had star billing, to giving that to the very minor character of Monica Courtland. Starring Joan Copeland as Monica Courtland and I believe Monica was billed past Chris, Larry, Fran, Dave, Peter, Joan on the show. I guess Copeland saw her chance...

Was Lin Bolen having a thing with Paul Rauch while all this NBC drama was going on? It would have seemed typical of him.

  17. I was glad RTPP ended somewhat happily with Allison and Rod together, Betty back with Steven, etc. But I missed it - I had loved the nightime version when I was very young and getting to see those characters again, five days a week was great.

I think NBC expected more than the 7.0 rating it was getting with RTPP after Days, The Drs. and AW were delivering big numbers, especially since it aired right after AW. All that being said, I instantly became a fan of How To Survive A Marriage. I liked Jennifer Harmon, Fran Brill and it was nice to see little Suzie Davidson as Lori Kirby.

Back to RTPP, I wish they had brought Stella Chernak's character back to wreck havoc. There was an actress who reminded me of Lee Grant - Michele Carey - who could have played Stella on the daytime version and injected something into the show. I also wish they had Allison write her book and see how it would have affected her parents, Rodney, etc. because the book would have probably have to be about her father being in prison, her mother's masquerade as a married lady when she wasn't. That could have been great drama.

  18. I loved Kathy Glass as Allison, I thought as stated before, she was perfect as Allison. It was strange to hear Allison call Connie and Elliot 'Mom' and "Dad' as Mia's Allison never did that, it was always Mother and Father! I thought Ron Russell was very good - and good looking as Norman. He had that sort of sweetness Chris Connelly had. I thought the stand out male actor was Joe Gallison as Steven. His longing for Betty was heartfelt. Mary K. Wells was a great Hannah Cord, a bit different from Ruth Warrick's characterization and yet just as strong. MK Wells always looked 1000 bucks in the role, great costuming for Hannah. I felt Bettye Ackerman was sort of overwrought as Constance and was thrilled when Susan Brown took over the role. Susan had been extremely popular on Bright Promise (which of course had RTPP's timeslot before cancellation) so it was a stroke of genuis to cast her.

Ben Andrews was very good, too, as the creepy Benny. I remember Benny 'took' Matthew Carson and threateningly sent Matthew's ball cap to the Carson indicating he had him and he wanted to exchange him for Allison. Matthew had thought it was all just an adventure but the incident really flipped out Allison who felt she had to protect her family from Benny.

Margaret Mason was deliciously evil as Selena, which was a change for the character. Selena and Betty became fast friends.

There were some duds in the cast. Stacy Harris died during the show's run, but I thought he was a poor Leslie Harrington. Larry Casey was cute as Rodney but didn't seem very forceful. Yale Summers who I knew from Dakatari (which was in reruns at the time) was a bit better. I had heard Dennis Cole was considered to play Rodney ( I think he and Ron Russell would have been good as brothers, somewhat of a similarity) but Cole's agent did not want him doing a soap at that time. I think he would have made a great Rod.
