  2. In most parts of Europe, the situation is still tense.

Germany now has a nation-wide ban on going out between 10 pm and 5 am in all cities and regions with a 7-day incidence higher than 100 (which affects 350 of 401 cities and regions).

In my city, the number of covid cases has hit an all-time high today.

The vaccination process took too long to get started. Roughly 20 % of the population has received one shot, and only 7 % of the population has been fully vaccinated yet.

Number of cases per 100.000 citizens in all European countries:

    1. Sweden : 391

I wonder if he will pop up on the VL revival.

I don't think he will – in the first season, they brought back Olli, Clarissa, Charlie, Ansgar, Carla and eventually Tanja. It's unclear if there'll be a second season.

It was a year of change for GZSZ: Of the 18 contract cast members that were on the show in January, only 8 of them were still part of the cast in December: Original characters Clemens, Vera, Elisabeth, Daniel and Elke plus Jo, Charlie and Andy. Everyone else departed the show for various reasons: Some actors wanted to pursue primetime gigs, others were reportedly only taking a break – but eventually never returned. The voids were filled with a bunch of newbies who were gradually upgraded to contract roles. During the summer months, the show only had 14 contract roles, compared to 22 to 24 which has been the standard since the late 90s.

    CONTRACT DEPARTURES:

Why was the abortion story controversial? Her age? Or just the abortion element?

Yes to both reasons. There are enough conservative people who openly speak out against abortions, and on GZSZ, it was only the second time that a character had an abortion – in almost 30 years (the first one was Milla Engel in 1995).

In case anyone remembers Thore Schölermann, one half of the popular "Chrolli" couple from VL, he took part in the 4th season of "The Masked Singer Germany" and finished in 5th place. Schölermann posed as the purple-colored "Monstronaut", the cheeky child of the "Astronaut" and the "Monster", two costumes that took part in an earlier season.

Songs he sang were: "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga, "When You Were Young" by The Killers, "T.N.T." by AC/DC, "Can't Stop"/"Give It Away" by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Careless Whisper" by George Michael, "Bad Boy for Life" by Diddy, and "School's Out" by Alice Cooper.
Since leaving his acting career behind, Schölermann has been a tv host, known for presenting "taff", "The Voice of Germany", "The Voice Kids" and other shows.

I'd hazard a guess and say they probably copied the spelling from the character in The Sound of Music

... which takes place in Austria where again another variation of German is spoken :P Fun fact: While a classic in the US, the movie The Sound of Music is basically unknown in Germany, Switzerland and Austria and was a huge commercial failure when it was released.

  6. On 3/17/2021 at 8:36 PM, Faulkner said:

Watching Quebec-born Kathleen Gati play German doctor Obrecht on today’s GH got me thinking: what are some of the best and worst accents you’ve seen actors do on soaps over the years?

I've watched some of Gati's scenes on Youtube, and as a German, I can say that her accent isn't that accurate. Especially her intonation sounds wrong to my ears... it's way too melodic, like French or Italian, and she also swallows a lot of consonants. If she's supposed to be from Switzerland, then she wouldn't have a stereotypical "German" accent because they speak a different variation of German there. (By the way, why is the character called "Liesl"? The proper spelling would be "Liesel", a short form of Elisabeth, but that variation has been out of fashion for almost 100 years.)

  7. North Macedonia could withdraw as well ... there's been some controversy because an artpiece resembling the Bulgarian flag appeared in their music video, and some nationalists called for a boycott. These people are also attacking singer Vasil on social media with homophobic slurs.
There's also been an incident surrounding the singer from Georgia because he allegedly called Eurovision a "sh*tshow" on Twitter.

What would Eurovision be without some annual drama from Eastern European countries :D

  8. So, the mysterious stalker who kidnapped the children of Schillerallee 10 during UU's event week was indeed Rolf Jäger, the show's resident lunatic. Presumed dead after driving his motorcycle into a canyon in 2016, he returned to wreak new havoc. The character was again played by Stefan Franz who was on contract from 2002 to 2013 and again from 2014 to 2016. It's still unclear if he'll return fulltime.

On GZSZ, contract star Ronja Herberich departs the show this spring. She was introduced as Erik's teenage daughter Merle in January 2020. She was in a relationship with Jonas and became pregnant. Eventually, she had an abortion (which was a very controversial story). Since then, Merle has been on the backburner, so her exit doesn't come as a surprise.

  9. Estonia is just as bland as their entry last year. Portugal is a snoozefest as well. Quite a lot of songs this year lack a proper hook or a distinctive melody.

Denmark rides on the current 80s retro trend – I kind of like it. By the way, this will be the first time since 1997 that we will hear the Danish language in the contest.

    Why?

I just don't like his "Oh, I'm so quirky and bubbly" personality and the song is nothing I would give a second listen to. It's too chaotic, hectic and disjointed for my taste.
    But we'll see ... I didn't like Lena either 😉

  12. I fear this will be another bottom 5 placing for Spain ... the song goes nowhere.

So far I only like Norway's entry, although it was better in Norwegian. The English lyrics sound a bit clumsy.

Btw, the official youtube channel has started uploading videos highlighting each countries' past entries. So far, 5 countries have been featured:

I had to laugh when Moritz was sick from smoking a cigar. Up to this point we've been led to believe he's this quite street-wise lad, so that storyline felt a bit at odds with his character.

I guess they originally had different plans for Moritz including a "real" relationship with another guy, but had to change storylines due to Covid-19. When he joined the show, he was supposed to "turn a straight guy's head". So now he's kind of floating around with no strong ties to any of the other younger characters.

It was the same on AWZ last year ... they had to abruptly stop the Chiara/Ina relationship because they couldn't film intimate scenes between the two actresses and they wanted to tell the story differently. While Chiara was still used in the figure-skating storylines, Ina was reduced to being a prop in her siblings' storylines. Fans of the couple were furious.

  14. While it's not a soap per se ... I just started binge-watching "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" (We, the Children of Berlin Zoo Station), an Amazon Original. The series is based on the 1978 autobiographical book and 1981 movie of the same name (the English title is "Christiane F.") and follows the lives of teenagers Christiane, Stella, Babsi, Alex, Benno and Michi in West Berlin in the 1970s. They all come from broken homes and descend into a downward spiral with drugs, prostitution, rape, murder etc. The show is quite disturbing, but also very moving and it has some good acting.
