I'd love to know the point when even Felicia Minei Behr could no longer deny Megan McTavish's shortcomings as a HW, because I've often had the sense that the women parted on somewhat sour terms.

When she wrote Janet hiring an actor named Justin, who looked iidentical to Will Cortlandt... with "makeup"... to torment Dixie.

One actor played Justin sans "Will makeup", and James Patrick Stuart played Justin with "Will makeup."

I read somewhere FMB hated that plot... but Megan got her way.

McTavish didn't last long after that (although, neither did FMB).

  2. Yes, GH was benefitting from Luke & Laura returning.

AMC viewers were getting sick of poor Brooke being put through the wringer for Tad & Dixie. These were the first cracks showing in McTavish's writing in the ratings.

AMC was still strong in the 18-49 Demo (usually #1).

  3. DOOL

    1992-1993: #8 4.9

    1993-1994: #6 5.6 (tied w/ OLTL)

    1994-1995: #6 5.3

    1995-1996: #2 5.8

    1996-1997: #2 5.8

    1997-1998: #2 5.1

Did it really "blow up" (or did the other soaps around it just fall hard)???

It made gains, but I don't think it's as impressive as some make it out to be.

  4. Didn't DOOL copy "Natalie In the Well" somehow - complete with the perpetrator making visits to taunt the victim and make food drops???

And "Susan" looked an awful lot like early Janet - except Janet didn't have obnoxious, OTT horse teeth.

I had no idea that All My Children got w/in 0.3 of Y&R. So All My Children January 25-29, 1993 and Reilly Days June 23-27, 1997 both got w/in 0.3 of Y&R.

    .

  6. People always mention DOOL coming within .3 of Y&R with a 6.9....

But AMC did that a couple times just a few years earlier in the 8s.

Btw, it was Tad's return/coming face-to-face with Dixie

Thank you for this. I was a kid when all this played out so till this day I never realized that Janet was released from jail bc she took place in some experimental plastic surgery procedure. WTF?!? How stupid of the authorities to allow something like that for a convicted killer that was insane

    She fooled Dr. Jaffe.

    She was still nuts.

  8. Yes, that is the lie perpetuated.

There is no actual evidence of it if you look at the hard data.

I was first suspicious - years ago - when I looked at the yearly averages, and saw ATWT in the middle of the pack for that year. Also knowing that ATWT/Steve & Betsy were hardly a phenomenon at that time - something it/they would have to be to garner 20,000,000 viewers for an episode. Even Greg & Jenny (who were MUCH more popular than Steve & Betsy) from AMC (#2 at the time) didn't get anywhere near that number - although the December 1983 interrupted wedding, by Greg, of Jenny & Tony Barclay received a 13.2  household rating (#1) for the week it aired.

AMC was saved by some really stellar script and breakdown writers during this time who went a long way in making Megan’s stories palatable,

    In particular, Hal Corley.
