  1. LaGuardia's book is like Schemering's -full of inaccuracies.

John Rice (Terry Kiser) left in 1968. Peter Burnell took over as Mike Powers from Robert LaTourneaux, who succeeded Harry Packwood, in 1968, not 1969. Gerald Gordon's Nick Bellini had not just joined The Doctors in 1968. He started in 1966. David O'Brien and Carolee Campbell both began on the soap in 1968, not 1969, and Carolee Campbell joined the show before O'Brien, not after. Julie Forrest fell down the stairs and died in 1970 instead of 1969. Coincidentally, Peter Burnell and Ginger Gerlach (who played out the story of Mike and Julie) both committed suicide in real life. Gerlach od'ed on sleeping pills in 1971, and Burnell hung himself in 1987.

Of course we now know David and Carolee came on in 1967

  2. Applcin, immature is the understatement of the year for how Mike is acting about Nancy. It HAS gotten a bit more interesting the past few episodes as Matt angrily confronts Nancy about a $75 dollar gift Mike was planning to give her (and Mike actually hit Maggie up for the dough). Then Mike finds out about the confrontation and has an argument with his father that Maggie fruitlessly tries to referee. Nancy gives a ringing slap. These are the episodes that start April 1.

About Karen and the wig, with the two primarily female characters/actresses being blond, LL had to disguise her naturally blond locks. On the other hand, Jami Fields (Penny) had to cover her naturally dark hair with a blond wig so she'd look more like her on-screen mom, Liz Hubbard.

Not to forget Matt shoe polish black hair, the diference in his picture from 1969 and 1978 is very striking

  3. I am sure that the First Ladies specials must exist somewhere. I imagine that the afternoon school specials also exist.

ABC ran ninety-minute drama specials, and I would love to see those.

Yeah the After School specials had been released on DVD in Box sets, but I don't think they are in print. some have been posted to youtube

  4. The World Series only aired five weekday matchups, October 2, 3, 7, 9, and 10. All of those are known pre-emptions, The episode we are speculating about would have aired Tuesday, October 29th, over two weeks after the World Series ended, so it could not have been bumped for that. I cannot find evidence of any other pre-emption after October 10th, other than the one on Thanksgiving Day (November 28, 1968).

If it is the speculation I have made on a few The Doctors Facebook page or the Retro page, that's not quite what I said. The World Series was a known preemption, so they would have plotted out accordingly. They knew the first 4 games (The Minimum) were to be played Wed- Sunday, but they could not know whether the game would go 7 Games, so they may have plotted it based on being 4 games. If true then they would have had 3 extra Preemption. And that seems like what we had, The Friday Shower aired on Wendnesday according to a certain Timeline. It also went on for 3 days (maybe just in case it did go 3 extra games.

They would not skip an already produced episode, that was not the speculation, The speculation was the re-wrote some of the scripts because the powers that be wanted the wedding to air during Sweeps (which they were doing back then). Sorry this was supposed to have quoted Robbwollf

Yes and no, they knew the World Series was airing at 1PM, and that the first 4 games would play from Wed-Sunday, but the show had no way of knowing that it would go a full 7 Games. We have some strong confirmation that the Wedding aired on Monday Nov 11 and Tuesday Nov 12. The Timeline many are following seems off now, the 2 episodes today would be Oct 31 and Nov 1, and tomorrow 2 Nov 4 and 5, but it is looking like they will actually be Nov 11 and 12, which would be more than one missed episode.. Any Preemption on election day??

Retro just airs what SFM sends them as they are numbered, they don't check each unit before they air it, (Maybe they should)

  6. I believe the show kept the title card over the first scene opening sequence until the late 70s (1977ish). The music was changed in '71. This is all based off of articles written for long-dead soap websites, so it could be inaccurate.

IDK if this has been discussed here or not, but apparently the show gained a primetime hour on RetroTV back in December. I'm reading that they actually started that airing at the same point in 1967 that the daytime run began with. It would have been interesting if they'd taken this opportunity to start at a later time period (maybe ten years later) just to provide a means for comparing and contrasting.

That would have cost them Millions more, as I understand it they have liscensed 2 years worth, going through 69. They may need the extra AD Revenue to pay for it. 2 years of the Doctors is like close to 500 episodes compared to maybe 60 for a Night Time show, which they Network gets more run Throughs to pay for it.

  7. There was one episode that was reported for inappropriate content for some strange reason and some of us couldn't see it at first. That could be the one. If so, make sure the age restriction filter is off.

Yes that was the one she was looking for

  8. "some show called The Rookies" !!!!

The Rookies was one of Spelling's best crime dramas! It ran for four seasons, but it's remained very underrated and not aired much in reruns. TV Land had it about 10-15 years ago, and I watched it religiously. Georg Stanford Brown, Sam Melville, and Michael Ontkean as rookie cops, each from a different background, with Kate Jackson as Mike Danko (Sam Melville)'s wife, nurse Jill. It was a basic police series but with very strong characterization of the leads and a great cast.

GRIT TV has been airing it

  9. Thanks. I wish I could give you a list of the episodes they cut off and you could give me the closing credit shots... (I'm just kidding) I really love those.

I don't recall WRCF cutting off any credits, So I would say it is original. Based on a script I read along with, they are not doing much editing, compared to how COZI TV has their shows edited.

  10. If possible we watch anywhere between 1-3 episodes a day; it just depends. Sometimes there are long gaps before we watch any. She didn't think she'd care for the show at first, because of all the green and because she thought the characters were tough to follow at first, but once she got into it she really got into it. John Rice is one of her favorites so I don't know how she'll feel when he's gone. (I hope someone interviews Terry Kiser at some point...)

Thanks. I'm so looking forward to seeing Vestoff as Althea that I'm afraid I'll end up hating it, but I am trying to keep my expectations low. I really loved her work on Dark Shadows, so whatever happens, I'm just happy if I get to see more of her daytime work.

I do remember Nancy saying she hadn't intended to get back into daytime so soon after DS, but she did, so you're right, that's a while off. I hope they have it up to that point. If any of you know any ways to get more people to support Retro TV, let me know. I called my cable company and I wrote Retro TV - I'm not sure what else there would be to do.

One of the other parts I like about the show is seeing what references they make to current events. One new episode I caught a bit of had Matt and Maggie talking about Mike's commencement speaker discussing how modern youth reject their elders, and why they shouldn't. It reminded me that The Doctors, while having a few young characters (mainly Liz, if you don't count the children), was written firmly from an adult POV, whereas today's soaps often feel like a 50-60 year old trying to pretend they're writing for a 16 year old.

First if you have Facebook make sure you like their Facebook page and use the Suggest Friends things to suggest all your friends like the page.

As far as Cable, You would first have to have an affiliate in your area, since Retro's not a cable Network but a Broadcast Network, Cable can't really Carry RETRO TV, they could carry the affiliate, In my case I would suggest Brighthouse carry WRCF 29.1. But with WRCF being a Low Power station Brighthouse does not have to carry LP stations. and they don't carry all of a stations Sub-channels. If you don't have an Over the air affiliate , then it's best to contact all the stations in your area and suggest they add Retro to one of their Sub-channels. Some area's don't have enough stations, so that makes it harder. It's a crowded field now, so many networks not enough channel space. And the powers behind Sony's GET TV movie Network and GRIT TV, have done the pay for play to get affiliates instead of Revenue AD sharing. Paying Millions to get affiliates is not something every one can do.

If you have an affiliate make sure you send them an email or a letter and let them know you like them having RTV on, because with the New DECADES channel and Hero's and Icons, and the reality based JUSTICE Network joining an already crowded field the station has to know there is interest in either keeping or adding RTV to it's lineup. Somehow I quoted you twice, Sorry

Also some people have it in their area and just don't know because they have cable. We have to let people know it's like it was in 1968, when most people watched OTA with an Antenna. They could either have a second TV on Antenna or have an A/B Switch so they could flip a switch and go from Cable to broadcast (though they would have to then change the setting in their TV to Antenna for it to work)

  11. Don't Panick about THE DOCTORS pre-emptions.....between February and July 1968 there were no pre-emptions!!!!!!! I have seen 2 scripts and the dates are: Friday 23 Feb 1968...episode 1365 and Tuesday 30 July 1968 episode 1477.....so there were no pre-emptions!!!!

    http://imageshack.com/a/img540/1969/J6mXCr.jpg

There have been some preemptions during that time, For instance Days was Preempted for the Dr King funeral and news on the RFK death on June 6, Days came on just before The Doctors, The episode numbers can't really reveal much, from what I heard they adapted the numbers so a Friday episode ended in 5 even if preempted

  12. No I didn't see them, which puzzles me as Variety stated they would appear on the Wed May 22nd episode.

First appearance of Rick Edelstein as co headwriter.

The only thing that came close was the extra in the Park scene which if there had been 2 pre-emptions would have been on May 22, (the chances are there was at least one pre-emption for Dr King's funeral, and Maybe a partial pre-emption on another day and the episode was re-aired the next day(Maybe why Retro aired the one episode twice, though that should not affect repeats unless that episode was put in the library twice and had two episode numbers) I am feeling the timeline is 2 days off which would make that episode in the Park May 22

  13. Look for actor Albert Ottenheimer and his actress wife Mies Waalewijn to appear on the Wed May 22nd episode according to Variety. This may clear up the issue of what day we are actually up to.

Ottenheimer was primarily a stage actor who was blacklisted in the 50's. His other soap role was as Moe Bachman on How To Survive a Marriage. He toured Europe in West Side story where he met and married his wife, a Dutch actress, and they returned to the U.S.

Pictured with Woody Allen in Annie Hall

    annie-hall-blu-ray-screenshot-0076553-I-

That should be on Monday's showings, If it's the first episode then we did miss a day, if it's the second then we didn't. My VARIETY's only go back to 1992 with a couple from 1990 and 91, wish I had them all just for the Ratings Grid

  14. How long does Jami Fields play the role of Penny Davis ? I know Julia Duffy of Newhart fame played Penny for about 5 years in the 70's ?

Christopher Norris I think was the first actress to play the part.

On page 67 Paul Raven posted a cast list from 1970 and Jami was still listed in the Cast

  15. It seems the Age Gate has been activated after the Upload, so if anyone has a problem viewing their regulat source video, make sure your Age Gate is set off. Why someone would report this episode I have no idea

  16. You're welcome! I'll have to email Roger Newcomb and give her the link to her website - and hopefully he can get an interview. Or maybe Brandon's Buzz.

Anyway, for once I didn't begrudge Matt being there when Karen was so shaken and upset. The way she looked at the bedroom and had to shut the door gave me chills. I've never been a Karen fan but she didn't deserve what Steve dished out. Karen needed kindness from someone she trusted, even if she didn't tell him why. Even Maggie would have to feel for Karen - as she had dealt with Greta's bio dad, the evil Kurt Van Allen (and apparently Bethel played out the lion's share of that story after Ann Williams left).

Meanwhile, the staff of Hope Memorial still has their hands full with one Ralph Anderson - and his latest plot is foiled by none other than Liz, who catches him just in time.

The second episode picks right up at that point - and Nick, Carolee, Liz and a big, beefy orderly have their hands full trying to keep Lila's husband in check. Carolee is frantically calling the Powers house, trying in vain to reach Matt (who of course is still at Karen's).

I have to admire Nick's restraint - twice he stopped himself from belting Mr. Anderson. Nick also showed his compassion and desperation for Mrs. Anderson's condition, all the while knowing that his hands are tied. Liz and Mr. Beefy Orderly also had all they could do to keep Mr. Anderson in the lounge!!

What I liked most about the second episode is how well the desperation was played of the staff having to decide what to do in a life or death situation with their boss - the chief of staff - nowhere to be found. Well, ONE of the doctors had an idea of where Matt was and was right on the money. I don't think I have to tell you who I mean. LOL

In another episode Carolee called that orderly Jerry. Glad Carolee Campbell knows about it and has the link Thanks Somehow this post didn't end up how I thought, LOL hopfully I will get better. It took a while for me to be able to post
