-- Did KKL piss off the writers? 😂 Because, my God, they couldn't write her as more insufferable or more clueless. Brooke has never come off as any worse than this.

-- I do want Katie to stop giving Brooke space for these kinds of attacks. I know the drama we get is great, but I am tired of Brooke going full-on disgusting and then pulling back -- only for Katie to let the tears flow and think there's a chance they can make it work.

-- I'm going to disagree about the lighting and makeup for KKL. I don't think it did her any favors today.

This story is the first time I've felt that HT is actually positioned as a lead. People are surprised when I tell them that HT is #3 in seniority behind KKL/JMcK! KB/SK excluded since they were off for years.

Katie has always been an after-thought over the years - except when they toss her an illness for a few weeks to nab an Emmy. I can't even believe she was at FC for 10+ years - her FC role was non-impactful.

HT was so fierce as a young, but mature businesswoman on Y&R, I never understood why they didn't tap into that. Maybe that was intentional to make Katie different.

This version of Katie is so much more interesting and, let's face it, HT rules. Honestly, it's also good for KKL, who hasn't had a challenging scene partner since SF left.

I need to return to this and your other equally wonderful post when I have more time, but I agree 100% with everything you say. Watching the 1995 episodes it is interesting that you actually do get a sense that all of these characters actually have, you know, jobs, even if they aren't all that realistically handled. And yes, to how there's still a distinct sense of place--people's houses don't all look relatively the same, etc. These kinds of details shouldn't be so hard!

Dark Shadows alone was inspired by classic books (Jane Eyre, Turn of the screw, Dracula, etc), classic plays (The Crucible, Gas Light, etc), and classic films (The Undead - when Angelique frames Victoria Winters as a witch) even the Bible a bit (1897 characters of Edward and Quentin and being likened to Cain & Abel).
Even when using those works as inspiration, the writers made each story unique and they selected the right character/performer to carry it out.
I would love if a soap opera would use a more modern day book as inspiration (i.e. Bridges of Madison County would be a good template to use for a forbidden love affair... one of the hallmarks of a soap opera..imho)

BTG: June 2026 Discussion Thread

This is what excited me about Ashley Jones in the role. I'm hoping it's one of those cases where they go against type and the actor surprises us. If they plan to keep her around long term I could definitely see Jones playing it in a way that we would find her likable despite her crimes which is key to a villain lasting.
I am curious where she'd go from a romantic standpoint. I can't picture where she could go in that regard.

Right--it's no secret just how many stories of Agnes Nixon's were inspired by other sources (going back to her Imitiation of Life OLTL storyline--if not before and don't tell me that Natalie in the well wasn't inspired by the 1800s sensation serial classic Lady Audley's Secret) But, for the most part, she did it organically. Now when that is done, it's always done with a giant, stupid, wink.

Cosmetic Changes / The Future

I like this idea. I don't know if it's a possible option, but it would be nice to at least acknowledge another poster's thoughts even if you don't want or have the time to reply to every single post.
I really love that the front page design that made a short appearance a few months ago is back. The option to see the last five active threads per area is so nice (vs going into each one to see if there is something new to read through). Now, that may not generate as much click activity, but if that's not a metric to care about, then let's keep this design
I'll be here regardless. I was so active 20+ years ago and then only lurked the AMC and housewives threads for ~10-15 years when my career and life took off... but now that I have time and passion for soaps again, I'll be around regardless of what ends up working out or not.

I'm not sure Erica was ever an alcoholic, but she did become a drug addict -- maybe in the late-1990s or 2000s. Pain killers, if I recall correctly. But certainly far far later than Phoebe's drinking problem.
Perhaps if Nixon had remained head-writer at AW for a few more years, Liz might have eventually developed a drinking problem. I guess we will never know...

Pivoting Trina into singing was a illogical storyline idea. I really loved Trina's career goal of an art museum curator, I think it's intelligent and unique.

The Britt-Rocco storyline is disgusting and offensive.
There is * no * "mother-son dynamic". There is only selfish machinations by Britt. The actor Finn Carr who plays Rocco is the best but that storyline is gross.
