ALL: Characters obviously developed to “replace” popular departed characters

GL - Lucy. With Harley riding off into the marital sunset with Mallet and having made amends with Buzz, he apparently needed another daughter he'd wronged. She literally even arrived at the diner during Harley's wedding sendoff.

Wasn't there a psychiatrist that RoJohn briefly liked on Days that was very similar to Marlena?  I want to say her name was Whitney Baker?  And Isabella was all weird about it?  I want to say it was when talks with Deidre fell through or shortly before she returned and they mentioned the similarities a lot for a hot minute.

Didn't Joseph Bottoms (Kirk) replace Joel Crothers (Jack) in a story with Eden on Santa Barbara?

Yes. Joel Crothers was very ill and passed not too long after that. Kirk was Jack's foster son and carried on his duties as the Capwell lawyer - and of course took a shine to Eden.

Eileen Davidson's incarnation of Kelly Capwell on Santa Barbara.  She was dramatically changed and turned into the new Eden.

Laura Templeton on GH, after Laura Spencer "died," is something I have heard before, although I never fully understood the story.

I don't think Reese on GH was a Brenda replacement, she was the real Carly Roberts, and her story was all about Carly Benson's backstory.  I wish they had done a better job with it, since it did show a lot of potential at times.  She should not have been killed off IMO.  I think it would have gone better if they had not also introduced John Durant, Carly's father.  Actually, Carly really shouldn't have had a father.  They should have kept true to history, and let her father be one of Bobby's johns.  Ironically, a few years later the introduction of DNA companies like Ancestry, 23andme, etc. would have made it much more interesting to do a story involving Carly's search for her paternal family.

Kirk Anderson (ATWT) was obviously meant to replace Craig Montgomery (Tom Wiggin came on in Scott Bryce's absence). Kirk Anderson, a charismatic businessman with a devious streak became the right hand man to business mogul Lucinda Walsh. Kirk had even had a brief dalliance with his former boss, Adelaide Fitzgibbon, that sort of mirrored Craig and Lucinda, although it was implied that Kirk and Adelaide's romantic relationship had been deeper and longer-lasting and certainly lacked the combativeness of Craig and Lucinda.

I had no problem with this as I liked Wiggin in the role, and I certainly thought Kirk was a better fit for Iva than Craig and Iva. One thing I wished is that Kirk and Ellie had been stopped short of getting to the altar, just as Craig and Ellie had been stopped short.

I do think that Jessica Griffin was meant as a pseudo-replacement for Heather Dalton on ATWT, as it's a bit odd how Heather became a law student about a year before she left Oakdale and Jessica enters the canvas as a lawyer. Of course, Heather was once engaged to Detective Roy Franklin, who would have to settle for co-habitation with Jessica who wants to delay marriage indefinitely. Roy himself, I believe was a pseudo-replacement for Tucker Foster, who had been romantically involved with Heather.

The unwatchably bad Tobias Truvillion was intended to replace R.J. on OLTL, playing mobster Vincent Jones. Sean Ringgold came on as his muscle, creatively named "Shaun". There was even a tacky handoff scene in which R.J. met Vincent and approved of him. But as Tim Stickney (R.J.) noted in the OLTL oral history when discussing Vincent replacing R.J., "not all actors work hard" and Vincent vanished quickly, leaving Shaun behind.

Oh shoot, I forgot a couple.

On Beverly Hills 90210 Noah was seen as a rip off of Dylan.

And on Days of our Lives Mimi Lockhart was immediately identified as a carbon copy of Sami's best friend Jamie Caldwell.

I don’t remember Jamie having a personality at all.  Except to tell Sami something she was doing was wrong.  Mimi had a personality right away.

Tricia Quick on B&B was definitely meant to be a Taylor replacement after Tylo left the show in 2002, I think Tricia lasted all but six months on the show. I remember SOD was highly critical of the whole thing.

To chime in on others comments Tucker on Y&R was indeed developed as a Victor replacement during whole EB leaving back in 2009 while Genevieve was an attempt to replace both Nikki & Jill at the same time.

I was waiting for someone to mention Tricia Quick. What a dumb disaster that was.

GH and its merry go round of tiny brunettes they tried to use as Brenda replacements.

Wasn't Genevieve around the time that MTS had actually cleaned out her dressing room? I remember an interview with Logan or Fairman where MTS basically says Genie was brought on as her replacement but it wasn't MAB's fault. The issue was above her.

I saw this and thought immediately (though I liked her) of Genie Francis's Guinevere on Y&R attempt to replace Jess Walton's Jill.

Anyone who thinks Genie Francis is fit to shine Jess Walton's shoes as an actress should think again. It was a preposterous casting/writing decision and totally vindictive on the part of MAB against Jess Walton.

Y&R
Gloria replaced Jill in the Abbott stories

Genie Francis felt like a "threat" to MTS as far as I am concerned

Totally agree that Judith Chapman's Gloria was placed in so many of the Abbott storylines that should have involved Jill. I often thought it would have been very good writing to have Jill help Jack and Ashley against Gloria. She had proven herself to be an incredibly loyal Jabot board member and it would have also harmonized Billy's involvement with the company.

Tricia Quick has to be the most blatant knock-off character used to recast a long established role without actually recasting.

The actress was like a younger, but blander, Hunter Tylo,

I always found it very telling that Genevieve's last day was Jill's return day. One went out of the GCAC door on one side as the other came in the other.

Like the writers knew...OOPS!

That was classic JFP. I always remember Linda Dano saying JFP "loves to work with good actors"...and magically Jess Walton returned.

Jill never should have left. Like her fellow diva Lauren Koslow, you can put Jess Walton anywhere on that canvas even now and watch magic happen, spinning even the lamest of stories into classics.

Two from '80s DAYS:

Megan Hathaway -- Stefano's second long-lost daughter, a spoiler for the Bo and Hope romance. I've been mulling over whether or not they should even have had Megan in the first place and just kept Renee around for another year and a half. There's pluses to having Renee in Megan's place (Renee having yet another rival among the Horton/Williams family), but also minuses (Renee and Bo were on canvas for months prior, where did their past relationship come from?) and sorta-minuses (Both she *and* Tony were kept captive all those months?; Nearly a decade later, that's what happened with Marlena and Roman. Which brings me to ...)

Richard Cates -- Marlena's post-Roman, pre-RoJohn boyfriend (and actually, she was briefly involved with Chris K. before John). Anyway, Richard also had a young child (a son, Kevin), but he turned out to be part of the whole big drugs mess that also introduced Patch and Victor. Still, in the beginning, you could be fooled into thinking Richard was Marlena's next big romance (especially since Rod Arrants was playing him).

Laura T (Janine Turner) was also a missing person at the same time Laura S first went missing. That's how she and her sister, Jackie (Demi Moore) were introduced, as Jackie came to town looking for her sister. Of course, there was this whole mystery of how/why 2 Lauras who resembled each other were missing and Jackie clashed with Luke (in a prelude to an intended pairing) but then she was with Robert before he married Holly. For me as a viewer at the time, and I suspect for many others then, that whole storyline of the lookalike Lauras and David Gray hypnotizing them reeked rotten eggs. We knew Genie had left the show and wasn't coming back for the foreseeable future (if ever, for all we knew then) and she was too popular to recast so dragging out a missing person mystery and muddling it up with a lookalike with shady connections was like, enough already, move on. I was happy when Holly was introduced for Luke and she not only was a totally unconnected character but so different. Finally put an end to the mess.

Side note: I was amused to later see Janine Turner with short, brunette hair, not looking anything like she did during her GH days.

    • Hahahahaha!!! You did not!!!   Good to hear you are well, Vee.   Looks like I'll be forced to work partially for Shot 2 Day. Those will be cameo appearances and no lie...sick or not I will be a bitch. Moreso since a day delay is better than what the actual post office is doing with people's mail currently in our area (though it has thankfully started to go back to notice post-He Who Shall Not Be Named).
    • It's a strange thing to bring up 40 years later lol.  There has to be more to the story.  Maybe he didn't get paid, but GH's use of it helped it become popular, therefore helped record sales.  Idk, it seems like the actual use of it on GH and the popularity and eventual record sales would be worth more than royalties from a soap opera?  I guess ideally he'd get both, but GH certainly doesn't have the money to pay him now lol
    • Yep - and that’s when the ratings really started falling off. The episodes during the latter half of the dream season were frequently  no longer even in the top 15.   Ratings had even started to decline a bit at the end of the previous season (1984-85). How many more times could you break up/reunite the couples, or have the Ewings fighting for Ewing Oil? Bobby’s death was a chance to reinvent the show. But the new writers/producers blew it. And Lorimar and the network were more than happy to go back to the tried and true for the 1986-87 season. But the gas in that tank was almost gone. After one decent season following Bobby’s return, the quality of the show plummeted.   The finale was another missed opportunity - in this case, to wrap things up nicely and go out strongly. CBS still hadn’t officially cancelled it when production started on the final episode. Hagman was still hoping for another season. So they designed an episode which would bring back old characters, but not force the writers to explain where the returnees disappeared to in case of another season. So we got another dream. Ugh. Victoria Principal said at the time she was willing to return to put a “coda” on her stint as Pam, but she didn’t want to be part of another cliffhanger. We could have had a great reunion for Bobby and Pam had the production company been willing to make the call on the series ending.
    • It's very unfortunate that there was so much complaining and whining about the format. I often think that soap fans have no foresight in terms of what can happen down the road. Neither AMC nor OLTL were "my shows" (I grew up watching CBS soaps, for the most part) but I was eager to watch these shows, thinking that perhaps the show of support would encourage other producers to want to 'dust off' other cancelled soaps and revive them, on a less ratings-focused platform, where they could get a little more time to build and grow. Yes, Prospect Park was a mess, but there might have other production companies who might have gotten the impetus to join the trend, and they might not have been a mess. Who knows? And all those people saying "I would've watched if it had been streaming on Netflix". Well, Netflix cancels shows the fastest of all the major streamers, so there was no guarantee that these reboots would have been renewed. Hulu was hardly the hinterlands of streaming platforms. I wish that fans of these shows would take the time to think and ponder the possibility that a genre that skews as old as daytime soaps might not get another chance to see another soap stream anywhere other than in bootleg clips and episodes of varying degrees of quality now because there was so much moaning and whining on previous efforts.         And you're right, House Of Cards was extremely popular, so there obviously was a mainstream audience watching dramas on streaming platforms.   As The World Turns fans keep talking about when AOL provided a streaming platform for that show's episodes but I guess that was seen as acceptable since ATWT was still airing on a terrestrial broadcast platform, rather than solely in cyberspace?   It would be nice to see a day when ATWT, GL, etc. could be streamed on Paramount+ but we'd only get soap opera die-hard fans complaining about the shows not airing in their regular T.V. time-slots.
    • Exactly why the others were annoyed at Kandi...decades in the entertainment and she can go DIRECTLY to the head (in this instance NBCUniversal...Bravo's boss) and make some changes. I could see Porsha feeling a kinda way about it since she's been doing good herself with her new RHOA contract, her now contract with that ent agency, hosting BRAVO CHATROOM, protesting, getting articles in the NY Times, etc. But...she has not been around long enough to do what Kandi did. Heck, I finally was able to read that Voices of Bravo article from a few pages back and did not even realize that Kandi reached out to NENE about this as well. In the middle of Nene and her lawsuit at that.    Power. To paraphrase BUFFY...Kandi got it. The other girls don't. This bothers them.    Which is what Kenya has said a few times this season as well. Married or not, if Kenya and Bolo had done something the girls would have been all over it. So when Kenya does it, they want to grab their pearls?    I agree with the antiheroine label.
