"The Conners" Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I love that this show continues!

HOWEVER... That said, this "sitcom" is really more of a drama nowadays. It's downright sad at some points. "Roseanne" was a show about life and laughs through the ups and downs. The Conners focuses too heavily on the economics of their situation and makes way too many jabs at their own poor existence. They've got to find a better balance. Sara Gilbert shouldn't have to shed tears EVERY episode.

From TV Line:

Quote

As showrunner Bruce Helford explains to TVLine, when Roseanne relaunched in 2018 “we decided that some of the things from the 8th and 9th seasons wouldn’t apply, as they were either limiting to opening new creative roads for the characters or part of the ‘dream’ period, like winning the lottery. We didn’t really have room to add Jerry Garcia, but we had a soft spot in our hearts for him, so we put him on a fishing boat and said he rarely contacted the family.

“As we moved on to The Conners,” Helford continues, “we decided that, with the wonderful additions of Ben, Louise and Emilio, our cast was large enough to do stories for 40 episodes a season, and that since we hadn’t brought him up in three years, we wouldn’t pick up on the narrative of Jerry.”

That said, Helford is not ready to officially draw a line through Jerry (at least not the way he has with Jackie’s son Andy). “Dan said he only had three children, but is he so angry at Jerry, for something we learn about later, that he denies him as a son?” Helford muses. “We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Agreed. The dialogue is often so clunky and preachy. The acting is fine, but maybe they should hire a couple of new writers to snap up the dialogue.

I find even during Roseanne's season 10 and it's still true... the show lost a degree of spontaneity, the lines are "performed" and don't appear as natural. Poor Roseanne, she seems to be descending into madness on her recent podcasts. I just ran across this again, and damn... I know your'e not supposed to laugh at the mentally ill, but this is comedy gold that just never gets old.

The Conners gets a positive writeup in, of all places, Politico.

Anyone else finding the recent episodes a little lacklustre?

I was trying to figure out why and then realized that they are not taping before an audience? There has been no voiceover announcement indicating that recently.

If that's the case it may explain why the timing off jokes seems a little off as they are probably so used to responding to audience reaction.

Is it the case that they would do the show twice and edit the best scenes together?

Also the storylines are getting a little bleak with Becky back on the booze, Darlene's friend and Ben's dad dying, COVID and them constantly facing financial ruin.

Maybe just some fun light stuff to balance it out?

Lecy has killed it on this show. I really need to catch up, I just got lost amidst COVID. I'll have to do that next, I'm glad it's going strong.

That was a great performance from Lecy. Another drama-filled episode from this "comedy"
