With Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria and Croatia returning to the Eurovision family, the 2016 Contest will feature 43 participating nations – just like in 2008 and 2011.

During the next two months, all countries will choose their entries via national pre-selections or internal choices. The first two entries have already been presented:

Albania 2016: Eneda Tarifa / "Përallë"
Like all Albanian entries, this song will most likely be completely overhauled until the Contest.

Ireland 2016: Nicky Byrne / "Sunlight"

This year, the voting procedure at the Eurovision Song Contest will be dramatically changed.

From 1975 to 1997, every country had a national jury that awarded 1-8, 10 and 12 points to the other contestants. In 1998, televoting became mandatory and national juries were abolished. The national juries returned in 2009, and since then the results have been decided by 50% jury voting and 50% televoting. The points were added up and split evenly. This means that a country that finished lower than 5th place in the televote and received 0 points by the jury, ultimately received 0 points. Likewise, if the jury placed a country 5th, but the public didn't like it, then it received 0 points as well.

Starting with the 2016 contest, every country will award two sets of points: 1-8, 10 and 12 points from their national jury; and 1-8, 10 and 12 points from their televote.

Bosnia & Herzegovina 2016: Dalal & Deen feat. Ana Rucner & Jala / "Ljubav je"

Romania has been disqualifed from the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest as their broadcaster TVR couldn't pay back their debts to the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). The channel also lost the broadcast rights to other events, such as the Olympic Games 2016 and the UEFA Euro 2016: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/news?id=tvr_romania_no_longer_entitled_to_take_part_in_eurovision_2016

Thus, the number of participating nations decreases to 42.

Romania has taken part in the ESC since 1994 and has been one of the most successful countries in recent years with a 100 % qualification record from the semi-finals. Their highest placement was #3 in 2005 and once again in 2010.

Ukraine has won the 61th Eurovision Song Contest, beating Australia and Russia to 2nd and 3rd place. The winning song "1944" by Jamala scored 534 points – but the song was neither the juries' nor the public's favorite. While the juries favored Australia, the public liked Russia the most. Due to high marks from both the juries and the public, Ukraine was eventually able to surpass Australia and Russia.

Meanwhile, Germany finished last the second year in a row, and Czech Republic scored 0 points in the televoting.
