LONG gone from OLTL (about to leave GH), but from what I understand, there was something about how JFP was doing all she could to make Max less and less likable, and given JDP's general outspokeness, I'm sure it wasn't a fun combination (he didn't particularly like Linda Gottlieb, either--he preferred Paul Rauch, who hired him).

As for him not coming back at the end of the series (even though his wife was still there and three of his other leading ladies made appearances themselves--four if you count AE as Tina), it's entirely possible that his reputation at ABC Daytime was such that it transcended from JFP up to the end of the show (Frons apparently was the one who wanted him gone in 2003).

Basically Bev was able to leave GL while JFP was on vacation--and JFP couldn't do anything about it, because it was in her contract to give--I think-- eight weeks notice before she left, and it fell around the time that Bev would be going on her own vacation.

Someone else might be able to explain it better, though.
