SO NBC had the top 3 shows, CBS had 4 of the top 10 and ABC 3.

NBC had 2.00 - 3.30 sewn up with soaps but could never get a successful 3.30 soap, trying with Bright Promise, Return to Peyton Place and How to Survive a Marriage. They finally solved the problem by expanding AW to 60 min.

April 78

NBC has canceled Knockout (11:30 -noon) and To Say the Least (noon -12:30 p.m.), effective April 21. Both shows have been losing their time periods by wide margins, with Knockout averaging a 5 rating and 22 share since September 1977, and To Say the Least a 3.9/16. Replacing them are Card Sharks, "an involving high -risk game show in which a contestant's intuition and the turn of a playing card can mean a payoff of over $25,000," and The New High Rollers, "a fast -paced game show in which the stakes are high and a roll of the dice can add up to exciting prizes and big cash."

August 78

America Alive, NBC -TV's new daytime experiment, is far from an instant smash in the national, ratings. NBC was quick to point out that it wasn't expected to be. For its first week on the air, July 24 -28, Alive posted a 3.5 rating and a 13 share average (12 noon -1 p.m. NYT). Its predecessor in the first half hour, Sanford and Son, had averaged a 4.8/19 during the four previous weeks, despite having a 7% lower clearance rate than Alive's (BROADCASTING, July 31). The Gong Show, which had aired in the 12:30 -1 p.m. time period, averaged a 5.4/21 for the four weeks prior to Alive's debut with an almost equal clearance rate. Competing shows on the other two networks all improved their performances during the week of Alive's premiere. ABC - TV's $20,000 Pyramid (12 noon -12:30 p.m.) moved from a 5.5/23 average in the previous four weeks to a 6.1/24 for July 24 -28, while CBS's entry in that half -hour, The Young and the Restless, moved from a. 7.3/29 to a 7.5/29. In the 12:30 -1 p.m. time period, ABC's Ryan's Hope moved from a 6.8/27 to a 7.8/30 and CBS's Search for Tomorrow went from a 6.3/25 to 7.2/28.

NBC -TV, which achieved almost instant ratings success when it expanded Another World daytime drama to 60 minutes, announced last week that it will stretch Days of Our Lives serial to one hour beginning next month. Five weeks after Another World extended itself to 4 p.m., NBC has jumped from 19 to 30 share in 3:30 to 4 p.m. time period. Show also gets consistent 30 share in its 3 to 3:30 p.m. segment. In April, Days of Our Lives will start at 1:30 p.m. instead of present 2 p.m. How to Survive a Marriage, now in 1:30 p.m. slot with season -todate 5.5 rating and 18 share, will be canceled.

Interesting to see these ratings- this was at the height of the Watergate Scandal when many soaps were pre-empted.  The Supreme Court ordered President Nixon to release the tapes to the special prosecutor during this week. On July 30, 1974, Nixon complied with the order and released the subpoenaed tapes to the public.
