My anachronistic quote of the week came the Jon-Michael Reed article @Franko mentioned about the introduction of a lesbian character on AMC.

In 2021, I hope nobody would refer to Lynn's sexuality as something "consciously chosen", although I do miss the term "alternative" lifestyle.

I'm glad you addressed this, because yeah, the comment about "consciously chosen" is so very of its time. The path to hell is paved with good intentions ...

AMC's low point included Lars being killed off on Palmer's boat with an American flag (and fans who needed explanations of Nazi atrocities) while Nina's lover Steve (aka Dack Rambo) was being unceremoniously sent out of Pine Valley.  Appearently, Mr. Rambo was supposed to make a stop at a paid fan event event for 10,00 people in Texas but his plans mysteriously changed at the last minute to a direct flight to LA.

We talk about the stereotypical uninformed fan in '21 and how the shows aren't doing enough to reflect reality, and then here it is, 38 years earlier.

Also, re: Dack Rambo ditching his fans, insert your own Ted Cruz joke.

We get the "would you rather?" of the year - Tony Geary in Atlantic City with special guest Genie Francis or "Soap Madness" on Long Island where Steve Bond is going to debut his new song?

For all my drooling about the menfolk, a Tony & Genie appearance BITD would be well worth the price of admission.

It couldn't have been Mike because he was already in Pine Valley and was key in discovering that Lars was a Nazi.

Dack Rambo's history of losing jobs abruptly is quite a thing to behold (setting aside Another World which is rather sad since it was linked to his AIDS-related decline).

I have always wondered to which extent it was his homosexuality and to which extent he may have been a problem behind-the-scenes for a reason or another.

They sort of brought the Nazi thing back in 1998. Palmer was hiding a bunch of Nazi paintings. Anyone else remember this?

It was an unpopular storyline - even with James Mitchell, I believe. The most interesting part for me was the Opal/Palmer split. I never really believed he would have stayed with her as long as he did, and the fallout (along with the reveal of her son Adrian) was good drama.

Hopefully I'm going to finally be able to pinpoint when exactly Dorothy Lyman last appeared as Opal (apparently in January 1984, according to Lynda Hirsch) and when Jenny and Tony's non-wedding (which I'm positive Opal wasn't at) was.

Your answer has arrived - its like Lynda herself was reading your post (ha ha)

Opal's final appearance must have been before Lars's death in November 1983

However, tales of her return were greatly exaggerated.

Was the rumor started by the guy who played Ralph Purdy?

And if I read the synopsis right, Jenny and Tony's non-wedding/Liza revealing to Jenny that Tad slept with her and Marian happened during the week of Dec. 26-30, 1983. A good time for events (like Luke and Laura leaving GH), given that many people were on Christmas break and could watch.

Ha-ha to the idea of Mart Hulswit trying in vain to stay on AMC, @j swift. P.S. Did you see the item about Elaine Stritch joining EDGE as "your" nanny?

Did Dorothy Lyman leave the show on bad terms?

The reports of the time do not indicate any bad terms.  She left to play a role on Momma's Family (perhaps inspired by Carol Burnett's AMC fandom).

Thanks. I was curious because that report seemed so emphatic that she was not returning.

But it is my understand she was really pissed they didn't ask her first when they brought Opal back and went straight to recast instead. That was long after of course but the story of why they did that if she was open to returning is an open question.

It seems naive to think she'd come back on contract after Mama's Family - I'm not sure what she'd expect them to do.

It could even be that she would have declined anyway but simply wanted the "courtesy" of first refusal.

Actors are weird sometimes.

The "Lars Bogard is a Nazi" storyline -- that's the infamous storyline where Erica said, "I don't have the right shoes to chase Nazis!".

Waymin.  Tony Dow once auditioned for a role?  Tony Dow?  As in "Wally Cleaver" Tony Dow?

Tony Dow had been on GH and Never Too Young (I think) so I guess it makes sense.
