OK, you're going to have to stop posting here until you get a new keyboard.

I feel like he's using 'T' words on purpose to screw with us. I also have a very sinister thought that I should probably keep to myself. So I will.

It's a good reminder of how good Julia and Roscoe were together. I always felt like it was a huge, and bizarre, mistake to make Jim Thomasen so vile. Some blame McTavish but he was actually really sick even before McTavish showed up. It was a big waste of a good actor and a strong leading man, which AMC could have used at that time.

Were Brooke & Jim ever given a serious chance or was he portrayed to the audience as a porno creep we weren't supposed to like right off the bat? I didn't really get to watch AMC much in the fall of '97 and any shows I did catch Brooke and Jim weren't on.

When I did start watching again I was really confused about what I was supposed to think about that pairing.

Jim was a con from the start. At first he was seen as a "hero", as he saved Brooke when the plane crashed. This was his intro; they, Maria, and Edmund, and some extras, were passengers. He and Brooke were close quickly and got together. Soon we learned that he and Laura knew each other, and that's when we started seeing his true nature. He got Laura to take pictures and videos for him when she was underage. He guilted her into staying quiet, for Brooke's sake, and he also made her think that she had killed her mother (her mother had been killed in a fire - he told her it was because of the photos Laura had burned). Then Ricky, the boy who had been in the pictures with Laura, came to Pine Valley. He was a heroin addict. To ensure his silence, Jim gave him a lethal overdose.

I thought this was all pretty ugly stuff - 1997 was a very dark year for AMC. I don't know if it was this or the upcoming material under McTavish that made Roscoe quit.

When McTavish came, she decided to just make Jim all-encompassing evil, rewriting the story to claim that he had caused the plane crash (Broderick's version was that Adam's airline had put fautly parts in the planes, leading to some rushed stuff I didn't care for where Liza got on one of his planes, had a miscarriage, and he was exposed on The Cutting Edge by Hayley and Mateo), and making it clear that he had murdered Laura's mother.

Actually I beleive he was shown as a creep from the very beginning. Here's part of his bio from Soapcentral

Brief Character History

Jim "J.T." Thomasen first appeared in flashbacks and memories of Laura Kirk English. J.T. was a man who agreed to take pornographic pictures of her so she could make money to help her sick mother. Laura and her boyfriend Scott Chandler, ventured to New York City in order for Laura to put the past behind her. Jim Thomasen spotted her and found out that she was being adopted by a wealthy woman, Brooke English. Laura and Scott returned to Pine Valley. A short time later, Brooke had an awards ceremony in New York and wanted Laura to accompany her. Laura agreed. While visiting for the second time, she ran into Jim. Jim confronted her and told her that he knew one of her dark secrets. Jim told her that he saw her burn her pornographic pictures in the basement of her SRO apartment building. That night a fire erupted in the building and, unable to escape, claimed Laura's mother's life. Laura left New York and ran back to Pine Valley. Brooke wanted to return to Pine Valley to be with Laura, so she swapped her ticket with Janet Green so that she could get on an earlier flight. Jim followed. Tragedy struck as the plane Brooke was flying in exploded and crashed, killing all but 4 passengers - Jim, Brooke, Edmund, and baby Maddie. Jim played the hero by helping Brooke save Edmund and Maddie, but did not save Maria in time… Maria went into the waters below. Brooke looked to Jim for comfort, which he was happy to oblige.

For some reason I think the first time we actually saw Roscoe was when he was on the plane. I thought they sort of painted it as a surprise when Jim and JT were the same man.
