Another World Discussion Thread

The more I think about it, the more I think the only way ANOTHER WORLD might have succeeded at 90 minutes is if the network had built little "breaks" into each episode, sort of like how they leave 5 minutes at the end of every half-hour of "Today" for local news, weather and traffic reports. Know what I mean? Let there be 25 solid minutes of story (with commercials, of course), and then come in with an "NBC News Break" to allow viewers at home to "breathe" a bit before jumping back into the story.

Either that, or use that time -- again, 5 or so minutes before the start of the next half-hour -- to show one or two scenes from NBC's other soaps, such as DAYS or THE DOCTORS. They could have been scenes from previous episodes, scenes from upcoming episodes (teasers, if you will), or maybe scenes that might not be in the actual shows but feature characters from them, as a way of whetting viewers' appetite for more.

Ironically, a 90-minute version of ANOTHER WORLD would have a much better chance of succeeding today, if only because NBC would exploit the crap out of modern technology. Episodes themselves would remain 60 minutes, but they'd pad it with chatty hosts commenting on stories and actors between "segments," taking viewers' phone calls, reading (and answering) e-mails and tweets about the ongoing stories, hosting brief interviews with past and present AW stars, maybe doing running trivia contests, etc. It'd be like "GSN Live" meets daytime drama. :D

That's true. It could have been an NBC daytime panel show. What What Happens? Look for the latest rumors on that brawl between Kaye Stevens and Susan Seaforth Hayes. Or they'd have a strained reunion between Beverlee McKinsey and Nic Coster.

And there the Peacock People would be, telling anyone who would (be dumb enough to) listen how this "new," interactive 90-minute version would take "classic soap storytelling, as pioneered by ANOTHER WORLD's own creators, Irna Phillips and Procter & Gamble, to a whole different level!"

The decision to drop so many characters, add newbies and expand to 90 min was crazy.

I can understand the decision to drop John to some extent, but alternatively Pat and John could have remarried and become the new tentpole couple-something the show lacked.Or Pat meets a new man with children.

Mike and Marianne were viable characters and their romances and marriages could have been a focus for years.Give Russ a decent love interest/wife,perhaps with a teen child of her own,and have them have their own child.Or do the Sharlene story years earlier, with her having a child by Russ.

Use what's there rather than trying to re-invent the show. The show never really recovered from decisions made late 70's/early 80's

Well, that is how Harding Lemay made Alice. when u think about it, if someone saved your life from burning to death, wouldnt you feel some guilt if they died? They played around with the Alice role too much. A fe weeks later, a new actress is plaing the role and the PTSD is gone.

    • Hopefully they can expand some of the sets again. I watched some 04/05 episodes and forgot how much more grand the production used to feel. I wonder if YR will be staying put or going there or somewhere else as well.
    • DAYS posted the recipe! https://www.instagram.com/p/DKiMVZvuZje/ dayspeacock June 5, 2025 Tomorrow is National Donut Day! Here’s Alice Horton’s famous recipe! #NationalDonutDay #Donuts #Recipe #DOOL #Days #Daysofourlives #TBT Ingredients: 2 eggs 1 cup of sugar 1 cup of milk 5 tablespoons melted shortening 1-teaspoon vanilla extract 4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted before measuring 4 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 stick butter, melted Cinnamon Sugar In a large bowl, beat the eggs until foamy. Gradually add sugar, beating constantly. Stir in milk, shortening and vanilla. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add to the wet ingredients, mixing well. Cover and chill the dough for 30 minutes to one hour for easier handling. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Spray baking sheet with vegetable cooking spray. Roll out or pat the dough on a lightly floured board to a half inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter. Place the doughnuts and holes on the baking sheet, one inch apart. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes or until golden brown. Brush each doughnut and doughnut holes with melted butter and roll in Cinnamon Sugar to coat all sides. Makes about 36 doughnuts. Cinnamon Sugar: 1 cup of sugar 1 teaspoon of cinnamon In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon, blending well.
    • "Jordan and Robert have the best brother chemistry. " They certainly did!  And that chemistry worked no matter who served as the protagonist in a given scene or story.  A shame that a full-blown story was never developed for those two.  Wouldn't have needed to be adversarial, either.  Maybe a serious, unexpected, long-term outside threat, business or personal, to one of the brothers with the other coming to his aid.

I was able to find most of them. I am not sure if you did 1974-1977 but I did not find it in the 70s thread. This is an amazing resource for EVERY soap.  1973 https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/41800-ratings-from-the-70s/page/78/#comments 1973 more research https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/41800-ratings-from-the-70s/page/80/#comments 1973 Update https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/41800-ratings-from-the-70s/page/82/#comments 1978 https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/50145-ratings-from-the-80s/page/135/#comments 1979-1988 https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/50145-ratings-from-the-80s/page/115/#comments 1989  https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/50145-ratings-from-the-80s/page/122/#comment-1876530 1990-1999  https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/58300-ratings-from-the-90s/page/11/#comments 2000-2004  https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/58300-ratings-from-the-90s/page/58/#comments
    • Mrs. H used the donuts to distract from the expensive jewels that she hid in the walls of her kitchen.  Now, it all makes sense...

I thought a smart cookie like Caroline Brady would've had the chance to hide a bauble of her own from her dalliance with Victor.
