Neither is settling for mediocrity just because it's "better than Latham", or better than everything else currently on daytime.

And many of us do! But should we ever let a HW's strong points shield us from her weak ones?

We know it isn't the early '90's anymore, but even that shouldn't stop us from demanding better if we feel these shows can or should give us better. If you ask me, settling, and not complaining, is not an option.

I would be happy with anyone who could truly put the "Restless" back in "The Young and the...". Even if it meant someone had to eat crow and ask back Trent Jones.

Because we like our weekly thread. I hate daily threads. Because many people dont watch every day the day ir airs, some watch mondsy episode on tues and then tuesdays episode, etc. We would have to go searching for threads. Plus, the same amount would be posted just in 5 threads instead of one.

But by that standard then we should always complain. Because lets face it - soaps will NEVER be as good as they were in, say the 70's. And anything less than the best ever is just settling.

Also, a lot of people are not settling, a lot of fans are actually very happy with the show. All of it? No. But who has ever really been 100% happy with EVERYTHING on a soap? I also dont see anyone holding MAB next to a halo and declaring her the next Nixon, much like what happened with RC and OLTL months ago. People seem aware of the flaws and her weakness, but are embracing the good.

Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.

(Like I said, MarkH, you're not the only one with an expensive college education. ;))

No, never again. I've been cured by the LML debacle.

MAB should remain HW till she dies, or until the show dies, whichever comes first :). If we need innovation and freshness, we do that at the Co-HW/AHW level! But a Bell shall lead. A Bell shall rule. This show needs that, and I'm down with that.

EVEN IF THAT BELL IS A SH*TTY STORYTELLER (which MAB is not), a Bell should lead and rule. No exceptions. And no Bell-proxies, like Alden/Smith either. The last name must be Bell.

I don't see how we'll get past that Friday scene, quite frankly. It is "shock" TV...and I don't see how the character can come back from that. But I'll give him/her EVERY benefit of the doubt.

Actually, my education was CHEAP! All public/state schools, and all funded by scholarships and assistanships. I'm a testament to the North American dream! Working class kid, son of a Chrysler employee. That's why the "pretentiousness" claim (which I accept...I can see how that might have come across) just scandalizes me. Because that is the last thing in the world I ever want to be...

It is also why I miss the "humble roots" characters, and it is part of why I so love the Fishers, Baldwins, and Amber Moores.

While I think MAB has done a better job than I initially thought she would way back in early 2008, I don't think your rule should be set in stone.

Now, a Bell as an EP? Yes. Absolutely. Bill Bell Jr calling the financial shots? Wouldn't want it any other way.

But a Bell -- any Bell -- as Head Writer? One only has to look at B&B and Brad Bell's sleepy stranglehold on that poor show. Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely.

And, no, that quote isn't the result of an expensive college education. That's me having watched a Gene Hackman movie.

about it I think Jan is a fine supporting part for a solid daytime vet (probably someone from the P&G soaps), as opposed to someone from the production location who is clearly cheaper. Which seems to govern some casting. I get the rationale, but I would start going through the ATWT/GL, etc. rolodex myself.
    • I dont mind Jan. She's good in the minor capacity she is used.
    • tbqh I don't care about Jan, I don't care about Ashley and I think Jon Lindstrom as Joey is an acquired taste. Jon is a great actor but certain things are in his zone and then some are not. Some days I find Joey credible and compelling, but the stuff with him hanging around the Golden Corral, grumbling about Doug and bitching at Randy is not amazing. If he had material on par with what MVJ wrote for Ryan/Kevin on GH back in the day it'd be a different story. I do think he has real chemistry with Vanessa, which is in large part due to MVJ clearly molding that character (and hiring an appropriate actor) in the Lucy Coe vein when she reinvented Lucy in the '90s as well. But I am not here to spend 6+ months watching Jon glower a lot (which is what he's doing half the time to carry weak story) and make more vague dire pronouncements while Jen Jacob gets flustered and weepy over "Daddy" or whatever would come of that storyline. Putting them together sounds like a recipe for doom to me. But I may be in the minority on that.
    • I know this will never happen. But... Halle Berry as Dani Dupree(BTG). She would rock this role, it's in her wheelhouse.
    • When I see how bad the Ashley/Derek scenes are, I know there must be a larger purpose and Joey being her father is the thing that makes the most sense.  My take on it is that Ashley knows Joey is her father but doesn't know Joey. Maybe he was there when she was a child or just not around at all but I believe Jan when she says she didn't lie to her daughter about who her father was. Maybe she left him when she discovered his dangerous lifestyle.  I do think they could really jump start the character of Ashley if they hurry and do this. Jan is a great character and her scenes with Ashley have been helpful. This would further integrate Ashley into the canvas and give her something dramatic to do. With her working at the hospital along with Doug, it could lead to complications if she learns Doug is involved with her father. I just need is sooner rather than later because Derek is tanking her character. I need a distraction.

    • The stories are awful. I'm not enjoying any of them. All I'm left with is Sally in a plastic dress.
