The Omar mess deeply upset me as a Jewish person on the left being lectured about antisemitism by leftists - most of whom weren't Jewish or even in the country. I'm taking a break for at least a few months til things settle a bit. I'll be honest, it's taken me a while and a number of conversations with my Jewish friends to make me realize just how painful her comments were. I'm sorry.
Vee Members Share Posted April 3, 2019 I mean, it's ancient dogwhistles dating as early as at least a century ago, it's understandable that people wouldn't get it at first. I don't want to believe Omar herself is an antisemite, and I agree with a lot of her politics. But I do think she's young, foolish and full of herself. I also think there is a longstanding problem with casual antisemitism on the left that is conflated with valid criticism of Israel in all the wrong ways.
Khan Members Share Posted April 3, 2019 (edited) Lori Lightfoot has been elected mayor of Chicago. She is the first African-American female AND first lesbian to hold the position in that city. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chicago-mayor-results-lori-lightfoot-wins-historic-runoff-against-toni-preckwinkle-live-updates-2019-04-02/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab6a&linkId=65619915&fbclid=IwAR2MvBh2cX7gBhmFrLfhezoAOIPsZiSIyGear4GPdMKduifA6yjX6Oezp5A 1 hour ago, Vee said: I mean, it's ancient dogwhistles dating as early as at least a century ago, it's understandable that people wouldn't get it at first. I, too, will admit I don't understand everything about this situation, Vee, but I can see how much it has affected the Jewish communities in this country; and to them, and to you, I want to express my deepest sympathies. I'm so tired of government by tweet and I don't care if that tweet comes from Trump or AOC. I'm tired of stunt queens and nihilists. I'm tired of the bigotry, including the bigotry I'm seeing from my own side. (Screaming "no more white men" only drives away potential allies.) At the same time, seeing the constant failures of the media to adjust to this new reality - as evidenced by the reaction to the Barr memo - leaves me despairing. +

DramatistDreamer Members Share Posted April 3, 2019 Lori Lightfoot’s race, gender and sexual orientation mattered little to most voters in this city that’s exhausted by corruption, gun violence and poverty. https://t.co/a6AoWXdfkc — USA TODAY (@USATODAY) April 3, 2019
JaneAusten Members Share Posted April 3, 2019 @DramatistDreamerLightfoot was one of the few out of the 20 people who ran for mayor in Feb who actually declared her candidacy before Rahm Emmanuel announced he was not running. That meant something to people here versus the opportunists like her opponent along with Bill Daley who waited until Rahm decided not to run again. The other part is several city council races were handed to new faces. That will be another factor in change because the city council generally has been a toadie of the mayor. Vee Members Share Posted April 4, 2019 The NYT walkback begins: Investigating Donald Trump, Mueller Team Sees No Clear Link to Exonerationhttps://t.co/xqnfzyFSWS— Philip Bump (@pbump) April 3, 2019 Good thing you guys were so cautious in not overhyping Barr’s memo. It’s not like you published a giant front page headline stating that Barr’s report was a perfect and accurate telling of Mueller’s report, right @nytimes? pic.twitter.com/dOJoJuJqc0— Parker Molloy (@ParkerMolloy) April 4, 2019

Vee Members Share Posted April 4, 2019 Mueller wrote summaries for different sections of the report so that Barr could immediately release them publicly, with minimum redactions so that “the work would have spoken for itself,” a U.S. official told WaPo. Barr did not release the summaries. https://t.co/4HMI4wPdGq— Philip Rucker (@PhilipRucker) April 4, 2019 Mueller's team "worked in near silence" for nearly two years. So "the fact that some have been confiding in recent days to associates is a sign of the level of their distress." Tonight's NYT and WaPo stories sure do sound like a distress call... https://t.co/Lqi7oxoWPr— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) April 4, 2019 One thing that struck me. Our sources say Mueller team really upset that Barr hasn't shared full story on the obstruction evidence they gathered. https://t.co/X9Vu5spBhm— Carol Leonnig (@CarolLeonnig) April 4, 2019 Wapo now has a piece following earlier Times piece. Very notable: WaPo piece seems based mainly on sources close to SCO staff. The Times meanwhile seems based on sources close to Barr.— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) April 4, 2019

It's just such an upside down world. Democrats are teaching each other apart, bound and determined to give Trump a second term (I genuinely believe many of them secretly want him to be reelected), while Trump skates and skates. I just hope somebody starts looking more into how complicit the NYT is with this administration. I feel like they aren't even trying to hide it.

The coverage was so minimal, especially once it became clear that there would be no prospect of another Daley becoming mayor. It's as if when Chicago is not specifically about corruption or violence or racism, the media cannot be bothered to find an angle in which to tell a story. Despite this being what looked to be a pretty significant race (in terms of historical precedent) in one of the biggest cities in the U.S., there were really only a handful of news articles about it.
