  • There'll be a double exit on GZSZ in early December when Philipp Christopher (David Brenner) and Nadine Menz (Ayla Özgül Höfer) depart the show. Christopher joined the cast in March 2014, and Menz followed in May 2014. Menz's character Ayla had previously been played by Sila Sahin from 2009 to 2014. While Christopher's David was the show's new villain – he had ties to the mafia, started an affair with married woman Emily Badak, secretly wanted to buy the "Mauerwerk" restaurant, blackmailed Katrin and Jasmin during the Frederic murder storyline, spent time in a Malaysian prison where his knee was severely hurt etc. –, Ayla transformed into the typical nice girl once Menz assumed the role. (Back when Sahin played the role, Ayla was obsessive and a baby-stealing maniac.) Initially, fans were shocked when David and Ayla were paired up this year because David treated Ayla like crap. At one time, he even handcuffed and gagged her. However, Ayla, being the doormat she is, defended David in front of her friends. The unlikely couple will receive a happy ending when both characters leave town together.

  • In turn, Luise von Finckh has joined the cast of GZSZ in the new contract role of Jule Vogt. Her first airdate is November 11th, 2016. Jule is supposed to be Tuner's (Thomas Drechsel) new love interest.
  • On AWZ, Ania Niedieck (Isabelle Reichenbach) will return from her maternity leave in early 2017. The actress temporarily departed the show in March 2016. In 2010, Niedieck first appeared as the scheming Isabelle who married her way into the wealthy Steinkamp family. She was first married to Ben Steinkamp, later married Ben's father Richard, had an affair with Simone Steinkamp's son Maximilian, and then had another affair with Richard's son Marco. In 2015, Isabelle was paired up with Dr. Thomas Brück, but she left town with another man and broke Thomas' heart.

Even though Verbotene Liebe has already been gone for one and half years, the show is still deeply missed by its fans. Here's a fan-made video which includes a lot of key moments from 1995 to 2015:

  • Niklas Osterloh has joined the cast of GZSZ in the new contract role Paul Wiedmann. His first airdate is December 5th, 2016. Paul is Alexander's godson and comes to Berlin to start a new life. The craftsman moves in with Alex, Maren and Jonas and soon falls head over heels in love with one of the show's single ladies. Osterloh is best-known for his role as "Robin Detjen" on the telenovela "Rote Rosen" where he starred from 2012 to 2013 and again in 2014.

The German-speaking channels of Nickelodeon (Nickelodeon Germany, Nickelodeon Austria and Nickelodeon Switzerland) recently started their own daily soap targeted at teenagers and young adults. The show is called "Spotlight" and follows the lives of five teenagers who attend a prestigious art and drama school in Berlin. In Germany, "Spotlight" airs weekdays at 8.15 pm; in the other two countries it airs at 6.50 pm.

"Spotlight" is produced by UFA Serial Drama which also produces GZSZ, AWZ, UU and the likes. The show is an adaption from the Dutch show of the same name. In the Netherlands, it debuted in the spring of 2015, but was apparently cancelled later that year after 67 episodes.

This is the offical trailer:

I'm sure it won't be last new soap to be developed :D However, I'm definitely too old for "Spotlight" and its "I want to become a singer/dancer/famous person" storylines. There are enough shows of this genre already.

Meanwhile, another actress is leaving GZSZ: Several newspapers report that Elena García Gerlach's contract has not been renewed. García Gerlach joined the cast as Spanish immigrant Elena Castillo in July 2013. Originally conceived as a short-term role, Elena started working as a waitress at the "Mauerwerk" restaurant and had a summer fling with John Bachmann (Felix von Jascheroff) after he had ended his relationship with Pia (Isabell Horn). A few weeks later, John and Pia got back together and Elena disappeared. In January 2014, she was brought back as a new love interest for Dominik Gundlach (Raul Richter). When Elena was broke, she turned to shooting porn movies and also convinced Dominik to take part in a shoot. However, she soon felt ashamed. In March, Elena left for London where she had found a steady job.

In October 2014, García Gerlach was brought back once again – this time as a contract cast member. Dominik visited Elena in London and the two lovebirds rekindled their relationship. Back in Berlin, they decided to marry, but shortly after the wedding Dominik was involved in a motorcycle crash and died. Elena was heart-broken and found comfort among Dominik's circle of friends, especially Tuner (Thomas Drechsel). In late 2015, Philip Höfer (Jörn Schlönvoigt), John's half-brother, fell in love with Elena, but she rejected his feelings. Because he was hurt, he secretly started stalking her. The big problem with this storyline was that Philip was always portrayed as the misunderstood hero while Elena came across as a bitch. The audience even rooted for Philip!

Meanwhile, Elena and John got back together. When the truth about Elena's stalker came out, John was torn between his feelings for Elena and his loyality to his brother. Elena and John broke up a few weeks later. Now Elena plans her revenge on Philip: She hired a guy, Kai, that is about to steal Philip's identity. Kai buys drugs in Philip's name etc. This move will obviously break Elena's neck, and when she is forced to come clean about her deeds, she will most likely leave town.

Meanwhile, Philip's portrayer Jörn Schlönvoigt has extended his contract for three more years. So according to GZSZ's logics, it's okay if a guy becomes a stalker, but if a woman wants revenge, she is labeled as a villain and has to be punished.

No, it's more a bonding story between frenemies Emily and Jasmin. When Emily realizes how much she misses her ex-husband Tayfun, Jasmin wants to show her that they don't need a man in their lives. They try to fix their broken kitchen sink on their own which leads to a serious water damage. Emily and Jasmin have a long history – besides Katrin, they are the longest-running female characters on the show – and have only recently started becoming friends.

Meanwhile, Jasmin's ex-girlfriend Anni is head over heels in love with the much older Rosa Lehmann, Chris' and Felix's mother. Rosa is keeping this a secret, but Jasmin's mother Katrin, who's also doing business with Rosa, finds out about their relationship. Katrin and Rosa have both teamed up against Jo who's trying to ruin Katrin's life after she had left him at the altar. However, Rosa secretly tries to oust Katrin from her own company KFI as well. Anni is torn between her feelings for Rosa and her loyalty towards Katrin.

On AWZ, Tobi will be deeply missed. But Michael Jassin apparently had to go once Bela Klentze had signed up for a new contract role. RTL considers Klentze to be a "huge star" – which he is not. I'm sure his character won't last long.

Thanks for all your work this year. You're a star.

So I read that the gay character on GZSZ (I can't remember his name) was put onto another show after the actor was let go for a while, and on that show is closeted and is now HIV-positive. But he is apparently coming back to GZSZ. What do you think of all that?

You're again referring to the Dutch soap GTST and not the German soap GZSZ

Please register in order to view this content

Both shows were originally based on the Australian soap The Restless Years, but are produced and broadcast in different countries (Netherlands and Germany).

According to this article https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2016/07/05/lucas-uit-gtst-keert-terug-als-hetero-3101456-a1510909 the actor playing Lucas on GTST was let go in 2015 because of a cocaine addiction and returned as Lucas on GTST's first spin-off series Nieuwe Tijden this past summer.

(Even though Dutch and German are closely related, I can only understand 70-80% of the words when reading Dutch. Most people in the Netherlands speak at least basic German, but hardly anyone in Germany speaks Dutch.)

At the moment, all three soaps seem to have run out of steam. Ratings are still solid, but there's not much going on except for weddings, engagements, divorces and random characters thrown together to create new friendships.

Last week, GZSZ also updated their opening for the first time since February 2015. The old versions can be found in this topic:

However, instead of adding new cast members, they just removed everybody who had left during the last two years, shuffled the others around and added some people to both versions.

The new versions are:
2017.1/A Jasmin – Mesut – Elena – Chris – Sophie – Leon – Sunny – Gerner – Katrin – Tuner

2017.1/B Chris – Lilly – John – Anni – Alexander – Maren – Jonas – Sunny – Gerner – Katrin – Emily – Philip

In version A, David has been removed and has been replaced by Chris who is now in both versions. Vince and Mieze have also been removed, but nobody has been inserted in their places. The other sequences are now slower.

In version B, Pia, Ayla, Tayfun and Nele have been removed. Lilly moved to the second spot, while Emily was pushed to second last. Sunny, Gerner and Katrin were added and are now seen in both versions.
