Hollyoaks: Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

With his call for glitz and glamour, I really see it being a totally new show. At first I was worried about that, but i've come to terms now. It's do or die time with The Bill being canceled and all. And the show is so bad right now that even the familiarity isn't enough.

Marquess did a good job of establishing new families at past soaps, so here's hoping it will be the same here.

This one stands out though. Too often we just see interracial couples on soaps or interracial children/characters with parents that aren't together. It seems like this is a fully developed interracial family, with a black matriarch and a white patriarch and children. This is a good start, but of course, a good story has to be there.

Hollyoaks has so many interracial couples, it's almost difficult to find any black couples in the show's history. I'm glad they are at least going to finally bring in a mixed-race family, not just a brief pairing that goes nowhere.

From Channel 4

The new clan will be called the Sharpe family! Family members include mother Gabby, played by former Footballer’s Wife actress Phina Oruche (pictured above). Alongside Gabby comes her son Taylor and daughter Amber.

Earlier today we spoke to Paul Marquess about the new additions:

“We will meet Gabby Sharpe – and her teenage children Taylor and Amber – in dramatic circumstances. Their arrival in Hollyoaks will change the life of a much loved character forever.”

Wow! That's quite a departure.

So Calvin is sleeping with Teresa now? How tacky to have these men whore around with three members of the same family.

Though I'm not watching currently, I cannot wait until Calvin dies and his last scenes air.

I'll check the show out again once Paul Marquess is credited, but I don't know if I'll be able to commit again. I feel like my habit for this show is broken.

It really is bad isn`t it. Its getting sort of better and thats because Lucy Allen is leaving and so she maybe putting on decent material. But once PM jumps onboard then hopefully he can turn the show around.

This show is tanking in the ratings, I wonder if it will be around in a year.

Good Friday 'Hollyoaks' drops to 850,000

Hollyoaks' Good Friday edition drew only 850k yesterday evening, according to overnight figures.

The Channel 4 soap's final episode of the week, which saw Caroline finally reveal her deadly intentions, dropped below the million mark for the second time this year, averaging 847k (4.2%) at 6.30pm.

Yesterday's figures are the programme's lowest since its all-time low of 840k on New Year's Day.

E4's first look at Bank Holiday Monday's screening half an hour later, meanwhile, took 309k (1.4%).

BBC One's EastEnders, during which Janine professed her love for Ryan, led the evening's ratings, pulling 8.41m (35%) in the half hour from 8pm.

BBC Three's 10pm repeat added a further 563k (2.7%) - the lowest repeat numbers since January 29.

Coronation Street's final two outings of week at 7.30pm and 8.30pm delivered 8.28m (36%) and 8.01m (31.8%) respectively. ITV2's repeats in the hour from 11.05pm added 125k (0.9%) and 173k (1.7%).

Laurel's balcony showdown with Sally in Emmerdale was seen by 7.04m (33%) at 7pm.

Five's Australian hour began with 1.01m (5.8%) tuning in to see Libby's ultimatum for Steph in Neighbours at 5.30pm, before 220k (1%) caught its 7pm repeat on Fiver.

Home and Away dropped to its lowest ratings of 2010, interesting only 788k (4.1%) from 6pm. Fiver's first look half an hour later had 606k (3%).

'Hollyoaks' stars 'fear show faces axe'

'Hollyoaks' stars 'fear show faces axe'

The cast of Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks fear that the drama will be axed due to poor ratings, a report has claimed.

Over the Easter holidays, the teen serial slumped to 850,000 viewers - a mere 10,000 above the programme's all-time ratings low of 840,000, which occurred on New Year's Eve.

Hollyoaks is currently undergoing a major revamp following the arrival of new series producer Paul Marquess, who has already culled a string of characters, shaken up the show's production team and begun casting for a new family.

However, despite Marquess's attempts to turn the soap's fortunes around, one senior cast member is quoted by the Daily Star as saying: "It's a really worrying time for everyone connected to the show. Not only have we had a new boss come in and cull a load of characters, we've had some of the worst viewing figures in years.

"It doesn't inspire confidence both on screen and off it. Watching The Bill being axed just shows that anything is possible. No-one is sure what the future holds. We're keeping everything crossed that we can pull through this."

Playing down the report, a Channel 4 spokesman insisted: "Hollyoaks remains a strong part of Channel 4's schedule. And as the flagship soap it is still the only long-running nightly drama for young British audiences.

"Fans can look forward to explosive storylines in the coming months when new episodes from Paul Marquess hit the screens."
