Y&R: Week of May 19, 2008

These past few episodes revolving around remembering Cassie have been very well written and effective. The characters are all being themselves, but they all remember who Cassie was and what she meant to them. I remember how Latham tried to remember Cassie last year and glossed over a lot of things. Hell, I think she only allowed Nick and Sharon to remember the event in one episode, though they were planning that "Cassie's Challenge" event over the course of a few episodes.

Anyway, the other storylines need some work. However, the characterizations are all there. As brimike said in another thread, all Y&R really needs is a push in the right direction. Face it, the plotting might be all off right now, but no Latham-style damage is being done to the show.

You're right. Y&R may be boring as hell...but no long term damage. No character assassination. Nothing LML esque.

However, the ratings erosion to the boredom is dangerous. Y&R needs a BIG push, I hope Hogan, by the grace of God, can do it!

The scene of Sharon at Cassie's grave is now on youtube:

It starts like 3 minutes and 10 seconds into the clip. Sharon Case was so understated in the this scene, truly one of the best scenes this show has produced in a while. I also loved that they played "Cassie's Them," the same music that played throughout the episode where Cassie died, a nice nod to history. I especially love this clip because there's so much heart to it, something you don't find often on soaps anymore. Y&R used to be full of it, and it appears to be slowly coming back into the fabric of the show for which I'm glad.

I have to admit that this was a great scene. And even though I do not like the character of Sharon, I couldn't help but feel for her, especially when she put the teddy bear under her head and layed on Cassie's headstone.

Contrary what many of you seem to think, I found Wednesday’s show (following a rather dull the previous day, admittedly) utterly amazing: David scheming to hide his debts from Nikki and the intro to another round of Newman Enterprises vs. Jabot Cosmetics...

A prime example why it is so unbelievable how LML could ruin this show at warp speed: a rather slow episode with extra long scenes and few quick cuts, yet the more classic scores = must-see TV. What you got was a great built-up for tension as it was revealed to Victor and us that Adam bought a rotten tomato for NE leading to likely face-off in court with Jabot... I for one can’t wait to see more of this story and even the previews for the next day were beyond exciting (I start sympathizing with Amber who used to be ultra-annoying and hateable in GC!). So I’m looking forward to seeing Thurs and Fri shows - especially re: Cassie.

BTW: The writers for Wednesday were all LML’s pets, still I don’t believe for a single second that either of those THREE (Stanley, Meals and what’shisname) wrote much of that now aired. Considering that both Rex M. Best and Janice Ferri Esser were usually in task as soon as Y&R went to legal stuff I’m betting my money (asking David Chow for advise here! LOL!) on either of them for overwriting the officially credited writers’s script...

    • I feel like Earl Hamner and his crew brought in Richard* BECAUSE they knew almost right away that Robert Foxworth was so dull as Chase.  At any event, Richard, IMO, proved to be much more interesting as Angela's chief adversary. (*Or brought him back, depending on whether we're including the original "Vintage Years" pilot).
    • And it will also eventually air S2, which will air its finale in Canada this Thursday, May 15th! https://tvline.com/news/law-and-order-toronto-criminal-intent-season-1-2-the-cw-1235449356/ As an American that has managed to watch it in real time, it's very good. Frankly, I think it's the best of the L&O franchise as of now.
    • You are getting like me. It's getting to the point that without any Damian sightings...it's been the fashion that is holding my interest. And it should not be that way at all.
    • I don't mind Jan either. If anything, they could be using her more to get her daughter's POV. Not to mention her role as one of the Have-Nots.    I also don't mind the local talent. Just look at soaps that were in NY or the shows that film there, they always go for the local talent and we get to find new faves.
    • I'm not going to watch (because...well...that M-dude...lol) but knowing the history between Henry and Roger, I could see Henry wanting to enable Hart to stay independent of Roger. I could even see it as Henry having the last laugh at Roger. Roger hated "the Henry's" of the world, which basically meant anyone who had money and social prominence. Twice Roger swindled Henry out of a chunk of his fortune, so giving some to Hart, who hates his father, is a form of karma.
    • Ashley and Derek have to go- they really throw off the pace of the show.  Today was the first time I fast-forwarded through their scenes. The writing and acting is just bad for both characters.
    • Jon is stuck in a story that isn't popular but with Cady I feel like the issue is that she was clearly thrown in with no real purpose. I still don't understand why she pops up. I recall early on it being said she owned a spa but we've never seen it. That could've been an interesting location for people to meet. She also could've worked better as Smitty's mom, but instead we get this random agent of Dani's who pops up twice a month? A total waste. I mostly agree. I do feel like Jan could be elevated with a name soap actress, someone like Judi Evans or Kassie DePaiva comes to mind, but they're limited to who is in Atlanta. Keeping that in mind I think the current actress is fine.
    • It's great to see. My thoughts might be a little different, but for the most part, I am excited and interested in most of the storylines. Yeah, you're right. This is probably how she (Dani) normally acts. And, I do not like it!  I agree; this is another distraction while she heals her wounds. If I weren't an Eva fan, she helped me root for her even more. As I said a month ago, I hope they take their time with her modeling agency. I would love to see her face a few obstacles before becoming a huge success.
    • I like that there are a lot of local performers on this soap and I'm glad they've resisted so far on hiring too many soap performers.   Cady has been awkward on the show thus far and Jon seems to have polarizing as well. I say focus on the local talent and giving those people a job and exposure.. and leave the P & G soap opera performers in the past.
    • Who do you think would be good for the show among the ATWT/GL cast?
