Y&R: The Devetta/Christel thing...

Granted I LIKE DS portrayal more, and she has surprised me a lot during the last couple of days.

But seriously, I feel like some fans are taking this TOO extreme.

The whole Khalil isn't "black enough" arguement rubs me the wrong way.

It feels like such a stereotypical statement, not to mention that the writers write the script.

Also, when Dru was cutting up Carmen's clothes people were saying that they were turning Dru "ghetto."

Khalil was great in her first few years on Y&R, but then she went overly "valley girl," (partially blame the writing) and that's one thing I agree with.

But Devetta isn't a actress to me that warrants such an uproar? I swear she's gotten more exposure for her departure than Jerry Douglas. And that's sad to me. I think most of it though, is to show how shaky things are behind the scenes.

Anybody else feel that way?

I don't think Khalil but I like Davetta alot more. Khalil is a good actress but I just don't buy her as Dru's daughter.

ITA, Dru.

This is getting ridiculous now. So, she was fired. Welcome to show business. Everyone's getting high and mighty saying Y&R has no right to do this? No right!?

I'm not racist or anything, but I have seen both actresses in the part of Lily and I do agree that Davetta seems more believable as Dru's daughter. At least that is what I have gathered from all the complaints over the last few weeks. Black soap fans seem to relate to Davetta better and prefer her by a landslide. Even Victoria Rowell made comments suggesting she much preferred Davetta as Lily.

Could it be that the Producers want Khalil back in the role because she is "neutral" looking next to her white husband and therefore less offensive to people who don't like interracial couples? I've heard some people say that.

If that is the case, that is very pathetic.

Dru's a ghetto queen. Neil is uptight and proper.

Lily was raised very well off. I don't see the "Davetta is more Dru's daughter" argument just because she's a little more rough. There's no reason Lily has to be more Dru than Neil. (I know Neil is not her real father, but still.)

Hello everyone,

I'm a new poster, but a long time lurker and wanted to respond to this. I am suprised that this situation has gotten so big, but I have to say I am happy about it. I think its a great representation of fans expressing themselves. This show seems to be going in an unpleasant direction for a lot of fans and this situation was the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak. I really don't want people to think that the unhappiness about this is based color because I don't think it is. IMO, it appears as if a person who really fit the role was given the shaft by someone that didn't. I am NOT happy Christel is returning and it has NOTHING to do with her color or racial appearence. I didn't like her as Lily, plain and simple. IMO, Davetta was just so better in the role. Her Lily was more true to her Barber roots and I liked that. Sure she wasn't perfection, but she was clearly talented and had a lot of potential. Because of Davetta I went from being completely annoyed by Lily to absolutely adoring her. And the shady way Y&R handled the situation and the fact that Khalil chose to leave in the first place just rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Davetta was good and just doesn't seem to deserve the way Y&R handled the situation. They don't mention her at all and act as if she was never even there or was just a temporary replacement until the "real" Lily came back, as a fan of hers that just pisses me off. Yeah, this stuff happens in the business, but I think people have the right to be angry about it. We aren't stupid or blind fans. We can tell when we're being fed bs and I think that is what angers a lot of people about this particular incident.

Davetta just seemed to be treated and continues to be treated very unfairly by Y&R. A lot of people can see that and are not pleased with it. I think a lot of fans just don't like it when thse TPTB mess with things that don't need to be messed with, especially when we like it.

I agree completely!!

But she was raise by Dru. so she should come off as mini Dru or something like her. If she was raise by Neil or Olivia then I understand why CK got the role in the first place & why she was rehire. I'm one of the fan who didn't care about Lily but wanted Daniel & Lily romance because of the mother factor but now the mothers aren't acting like themselves so there no need for CK.

IA with everything & it has nothing to do with color it had to do with how I saw Dru daughter who was raise by Dru & CK didn't fit that Lily I was looking for.

Welcome to SON Taraija. I agree with everything you've said.

Actually, Lily was a hell raising teen from hell when she was introduced to the show. She had gotten involved with a bad crowd in Paris and Dru had to bring her back to get some order. Of course since Khalil is such a terrible actress, she couldn't convey any of that.

As for the race thing, I'm not one to put race in everything, but in this case it's valid. If they recast Victor with an American actor when Victor is German, would it be the same? What about a light-skinned hispanic woman for Ashley? Or a black woman for Gloria? If any of those cases happened, people would think the casting department is insane. There is no way in hell Khalil looks like she could be the daughter of Lily, Malcolm or Neil. She doesn't even act like it.

Beyond the race issue, she just isn't a good actress. Khalil's Lily came off very snobby, valley girl and self centered. She had ZERO chemistry with her family and I didn't think her relationship with Daniel was all that. It's hard for teen characters to really break out, but I thought Davetta did that for Lily. She brought the vulnerability and strength and finally she stopped being so self centered.

I can't wait to see Christel back because I can't see her playing the more mature and strong Lily we see now.

I'm hoping that Christel doesn't "wow" anybody at Y&R and they realize what a horrible mistake they've made. Then I hope they ask Davetta to return, but she gives them a big FU b/c she has a new job.

I saw more of Drucilla in Devetta than I did in Christel. She was better suited at Dru's daughter. She had the mannerisms(sp?) of Dru. I wonder what the big storyline coming up for Lily is? A storyline that Devetta couldnt pull off? Will Lily be the one who killed Carmen? Just a guess on my part.

What's so strong and mature about this Lily?

She ran away and married Daniel for goodness sake. Where's the maturity in that?

My whole point however was just that this whole situation is being played bigger than it should be, and the hatred for Khalil isn't nearly warranted.

One more point, I see nothing wrong with Christel, a teenage girl wanting to try different things.

Let's also not forget that Michelle Stafford left the show for her primetime gig and then returned back to the show.

It's natural for a performer to come back to their bread and butter.

She didn't just run away, remember when she blackmailed Dru? Could you see Christel doing that? What about when Dru tried to snatch her up and they almost got into a catfight? I can't see Christel even remotely doing a convincing job of that.
