  1. Would you rather see the debut of a brand new daytime soap with a dream team cast and crew, or the dvd release of a limited number of classic episodes of the soap of your choosing?

I think it is strange that SONY has Days and Y&R saved, but we can't view it. Is it not digital, is that the problem?

At this point, I'd go with a new soap. The genre desperately needs a kick start.

I'm firmly in the camp that cannot fathom why we've never seen any kind of Y&R, DAYS, or GH release. Not even for general pop culture interest? I'm sick of the excuse that soaps have too many episodes and no one wants to watch episodes out of context.

I remember watching Judith Light in the Ryan White TV movie she did during WTB? when I was a little boy and what an emotional ride that was for me.  That movie really solidified Judith's dedication to AIDS activism and this all seem... I don't want to say surreal.  Meanwhile, is it just me or did it seem pretty loaded when he said he hasn't spoken with Alyssa in a long time? #startingshit

There are five episodes of it, which were aired as a test run for run week and that is as far as it got. That video is pretty high quality, so I imagine that there is at least one episode out there somewhere.

  11. I am really missing All My Children today.  One of my most precious AMC   memories is from, in hindsight, January 5th, 1990, coming home from school that evening, and my mother describing to me what she saw on her little black and white TV at her work desk that day... AMC got new opening titles, "wif all dey pictures... Joe and Roof... in dey frames... and at da ind, Urrica's picture falls into da book..."  Imagining all of that before actually seeing it?  Priceless.  I miss the days when we scheduled Friday doctor/dentist appointments around AMC.

I went back and just glanced through some of our threads from 2006-2007 a few days ago, watching some of the corresponding scenes on YouTube, and I can't believe I'm feeling nostalgic over even THAT stuff. AMC was just a special place with special people, and it hurts so much to not have it living and breathing anymore.

Hardcore Pawn, ugh, I truly love that show but the set up situations bring me much third party embarrassment. My dad and I watch every week and we're getting a little antsy with the fakeness. The show also does NO favors for black people. Ashley and Les are much better actors than Seth, and the "guest stars".

    3. SFK

      SFK

AMS, Wiener's Circle is a group of sistas (and a brotha) who work a hotdog hole in the wall on the North side of Chicago. Most of their clientele is late night drunks so the staff entertains itself by making the customers do crazy [[email protected]#$%^&*] like duel with hotdogs in their mouth or strip. Some LOL moments, and the show is new enough at this point that the stars seem unaffected and pretty naturalistic even if the situations are set up.

      jfung79

I agree with you, SFK. Don't have tapes, but from the few clips on YouTube, I think The City holds up better with time than maybe it even seemed *at* the time. Not only visually, but also in concept and character. It is a soap for today, and its crime was that it was invented too early. Instead of Loving becoming The City, maybe it would have worked if One Life to Live had become The City twenty years later.

    4. DRW50

      DRW50

I think it's biggest crime was that it was largely unfocused and semi-plotless for too long.

Any of you catch the preview for The Wiz?  I'm looking forward to it.  I find it hard to criticize her because she seems like such a lovely, funny person, but I don't think QT's singing voice is up to par for these roles she books.  Makes me wish Nell Carter was still around, or Jennifer Holliday had a shot.

I just saw it.  I'm assuming that because they were in rehearsals, no one was doing everything full out but I can't help but wish that Evilene was a dyed in the wool Broadway actress/singer.  Jennifer Holiday could've been amazing.  I know I mentioned her before but Tonya Pinkins has blown me away when I saw her song live onstage, so I know she'd also have made a great Evilene but I'm hoping the MJB will, in the end, surprise me.

Also, I heard there will be a tour when this TV performance is done so some of these actors will probably be replaced.  I doubt that MJB, QL, Common, Neo and Uzo Aduba will be able to do the stage as they often have tours, films and TV shows of their own to return to.  Maybe this will mean future opportunity for more B'way talent.

  18. My grandparents celebrated their 53rd anniversary today.  My grandfather taught private music lessons in their home, and his daily routine was lunch and All My Children.  That's how my dad was familiar with characters like Phoebe and Chuck long before he met my ABC Daytime obsessed mom.  When my grandmother retired in '79, she joined my grandad with the daily AMC viewing until cancellation.  I think it's pretty amazing that combined, minus vacations, appointments, the odd errand that ran longer than expected, they clocked thousands of hours of AMC viewing, seeing at least 90% of the show's run.

I wish he would translate this shoestring budget model into a serial, and of course find himself some great writers, because while I appreciate the effort and the great casts, the writing for his two sitcoms suck. Without getting too personal, do you aspire to shop your own work as a writer, or are you content/most satisfied fleshing out the ideas of others? Not that I don't have my own imo great ideas, but I find that I'm pretty terrific as "creative consultant", improving upon the ideas of others.
