When Nicki, Victoria, and Claire were talking at the ranch about Claire's dream, what room was that supposed to be?  It had white sofas, and it didn't look like the ranch living room that I recall.

The original Newman ranch was burnt down 10 or so years ago and rebuilt with a bland set that was pretty much universally derided. A few years ago we stopped seeing that set and a new smaller room took it's place. There is no longer a front entrance or staircase, just this sitting room.

  2. I don't understand why after 35 years of stories and characters to choose from, you would pay tribute to a long ago plotline about a gorilla.

It's not as though it was up there as one of AW''s memorable moments and much loved/referenced by fans.

As for Beverlee returning, they could have asked Beverly Penberthy,Richard Bekins or a host of others to return. Even Carmen Duncan to bring us up to date on Iris.

So many possibilities not considered or rejected.

  5. Like other shows of that time going through constant headwrier changes (SFT,AW,GL) the new teams were too hasty in dropping characters for newbies instead of looking at what was there and how placing a character in a new story could work out well.

Often the new characters were basically replicas of the old and those characters could have easily been worked into the new storyline and provide viewers with more continuity.

  6. Glad I decided to give it a miss. I learned the hard way not to commit to a show until the whole season is done and dusted and reviews/comments are in.

The trailer looked great, visually impressive but the Ryan Murphy brand had me wary, with good reason, it seems. Plenty of other stuff to watch.

  7. Well put @Vee the stories are poorly plotted and paced  w/o any real long term ramifications. Just incidents that fill up a few weeks of airtime.

Josh left once before due to some unspecified issues so I can't see how taking in so much of the load is helpful to him or the show.

Jill parentage (2003), Cassie death (2005), and John Abbott death (2006) were the trifecta that lead to the end of Y&R as we knew it.

Let's add Pheila, Phillip back from the dead,Jill is a Fenmore and the Katherine/Tucker/Devon debacle as icing on the cake.

  9. So far this season has been lackluster.

Tired of John Goodman staring off into space to read his lines. With so many characters Dan should have been moved too guest spots-having to find stories for him every week is dragging the show down.

Estelle Parsons is amazing at 96, but it was pretty obvious the majority of her scenes were taped separately and edited in.

I never understood why they just didn't say they were in Egypt while they were shooting in Arizona.  They spent nearly the entire time in the Arizona desert, didn't they?  So they could have done all the location desert shots in Arizona and just played it like it was Egypt, then the specific interior Egypt stuff could have been shot in the studio.  That would have made MUCH more sense to the audience.

Was it perhaps a financial thing?

I know a lot of these location stories had financial backing from the local tourism authorities -at least the overseas ones did. In return for the exposure gained through national television.

Was there any disclaimer in the credits along the lines of 'assistance provided by Arizona Tourist Board' or some such?

That pairing worked because both shows appealed to the male audience. Dallas was always the more male-focused of the CBS primetime soaps.

Also the southern theme of both shows away from the typical LA setting.

NBC tried the same thing when they paired BJ and the Bear with Flamingo Road.

But then again, Larry was always extremely vocal about how he felt doing soap work was beneath him - no idea why he stayed for decades other than it was a solid paycheck

I don't think he felt that way. He was realistic about soaps and their limitations. He said he would play anything as long as he felt their was an honest motivation behind it. He liked the people he worked with (even married one!) and it gave him the opportunity to do stage work w/o worrying about money.

He was more dismissive of a lot of primetime stuff and laughed when ABC tried to lure him with promises of the chance to work on Love Boat and Fantasy Island.
