still don't get the hate for Joshua Morrow. At all. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not long after JM arrival in June 1994, Y&R went off track (second half of 1994 through first half of 1997) and Nick/Sharon ate the show for a good portion of that time (Fall 1994 through Spring 1996).

Bill Bell tried so hard to make JM happen.

Any idea why Calhoun only lasted 2 years?

That I don't know, but I am pretty sure it's been verified here that Robert Calhoun left by his own choice. AFAIK he didn't EP any other show after GL.

And, unpopular opinion, I know, and I don't care, but Maureen Bauer was BORING! I agree with that focus group that decided that they wouldn't miss her and JFP went along with it. I never missed Maureen after she was killed off.

GL being a more community-based show (at least in the early 1990s I thought it was) needed to have an anchor/tentpole character to keep things grounded, and JFP didn't realize that.

it's so subtle that it's almost hard to tell when she had her, um, face refreshed, lol?  Whoever she paid to do the job was a true artist.

Angela Lansbury was 59 in 1984 and 71 in 1996.

I would guess by the time of Murder, She Wrote, she must have cut down/quit smoking and was more vigilant about sun protection.

Whatever work she had done during Murder, She Wrote was not blatantly obvious and in your face.

they could have freed up money by getting rid of Nick whose story was long stale..

Vincent Irizarry return overlapped w/ JFP becoming EP. I consider that the first Friend of Jill incident.

There were four Friend of Jill incidents: Vincent Irizarry, Justin Deas, Marcy Walker, Marj Dusay. We also saw Mark Derwin become a Friend of Jill.

JFP coasted off the groundwork that was laid during the Robert Calhoun era. I still cannot believe JFP run (July 1991 to May 1995) was nearly twice the length of Robert Calhoun (June 1989 to July 1991) and JFP got the ratings up during her first year (then again, the ratings increase was helped by ABC big three tanking at various times during that year and Days being in their post-supercouple/pre-Reilly mess era).

JMO here, but once his kids get to adult stage, Nick seems to struggle to perform as a father. I haven’t watched nearly enough episodes in recent times to discern whether it’s the writing, the acting, a chemistry thing that has result from so many recasts of Noah and Summer (in addition to the SORAS) or lack of direction in each scene but in recent years, I have noticed this.

That's because Joshua Morrow has not evolved from being an overgrown frat boy. To think we are two months away from his 30th anniversary.

I found myself getting mad that Maureen was so willing to give Roger the time of day. After everything that he'd done to all these people she knew....ugh.

Maureen being the anchor/tentpole of the community saw the good qualities in everyone and showed kindness to everyone, and yes that included Roger. While Roger didn't care about what the rest of Springfield thought of him, he cared about what Maureen thought of him, and that's evident when Roger and Maureen are trapped together during the blackout and when Roger visited Maureen's grave.

    Hey kalbir,

Just curious. No antagonism intended at all. Why would you only consider the TV years and not the radio years. I ask because I know several people do this when talking about GL and I'm genuinely curious as to the reason for this. It's like some people refuse to even acknowledge the radio years. I don't get that. It's the same show, just different medium. It's almost like people have an aversion to the medium of radio or something. I've never understood it.

TV years to TV years for comparison. I'm aware of the radio history.

Even if I have to watch 1982 to 1991 just to get to this point... I will.

The build up to this episode starts June 1989 when Robert Calhoun becomes EP and this episode was the culmination of his run.

In some respects, the changeover is almost as dramatic as when Bill Bell switched the focus of Y&R from the Foster/Brooks  to the Newman/Abbotts.

The big difference though is that Y&R had been on less than 10 years when Bill Bell shifted focus whereas GL had 30 years of history (I'm counting from the first television episode).

  9. 1983 was the transition year. February 1983 was EP change from Allen Potter to Gail Kobe, and HW change from L. Virginia Browne to Richard Culliton and Pamela Long. September 1983 Pamela Long became sole HW. If the dates are wrong, please correct.

I recognize that from Spring 1983 to Summer 1984 Gail Kobe/Pamela Long set in motion characters and storylines that would carry GL through its final 25 years, but it was too much chasing 1980s trends which wasn't sustainable in the long term and the ratings from Fall 1984 onward reflected that.

Knots, Dallas and FC promo. Season premiere for Knots and second week of Dallas and FC.

Also includes a promo for the second episode of Murder, She Wrote.

1984/85 was the best television season of the 1980s.
