  1. I didn't catch that one, even though I saw the scene. Ridiculous writing. All genres of writing use artistic license. But this is not artistic license -- it is lazy, horrible writing that does not respect the intelligence of the audience.
  2. Yes. And I assume Mitch flew from the outskirts of Las Vegas to Genoa City. So how did he get on the plane with no ID? And no credit cards? Whoever is writing this drivel must have some internalized hatred for the genre that gives him a paycheck. How else could anyone defend plot holes like this? And there are others just as silly.
  3. Okay, then it was the Huntington Mansion connected to Justine. I was wrong. Thank you for sharing the episode and the information.
  4. Didn't they bring up the Chapin Mansion years later, during the Justine plot? Justine bought an old decaying mansion, kidnapped Vicky and kept her there. If I'm not mistaken, it was referred to as the Chapin Mansion a couple of times.
  5. Good points. But it wasn't a tumor that brought about Rachel's brain surgery in '78. Sven had kidnapped Rachel and hidden her in the pump-house on the Cory estate. When that was discovered, Sven pushed Rachel and knocked her down, as he was trying to escape. Rachel hit her head on a ledge of concrete and suffered brain damage which required surgery. As if the kidnapping wasn't enough. LOL.
  6. There are several interesting and confusing things about this promo. First, Rachel and Mac were already a couple by this point, and they might have already been married. So why does the promo feature Rachel and Steve? The Alice/Steve/Rachel triangle had been over for months. And who are the brothers mentioned in the promo? I believe the only two brothers on the entire show at this time were Steve and Willis. But Rachel had moved on from Steve at this point, and she was NEVER involved with Willis. This entire ad sends some weird messages. I wonder who wrote it...
  7. I agree with your comment. To me, this makes the entire show more believable. Many big extended families think they are perfect, but no family is perfect, and I don't mind the Duprees' delusions. The Duprees might be a great family, but they aren't perfect.
  8. If I'm not mistaken, VW kept this hairstyle (or very similar) until Rachel's brain surgery in 1978. At that point (since Rachel's head was supposedly shaved), VW got a new shorter hair style and the character was said to be wearing a wig for a while. Very soon after this, VW went through a series of wavy (and occasionally curly) perms. Some of those perms worked better than others.
  9. Something seems to be going on with her voice. Has anyone else noticed? At times, it seems she has difficulty getting words out -- as if it takes a lot of effort.
  10. Any bets on who the next psycho from the past will be? I think the list is getting slim. Maybe David Kimball? Or how about Sven Petersen from Another World?? Who cares if it's not the same show or same network? LOL.
  11. You prove my point. Y&R fans need a break from these endless addiction storylines. Please writers -- write something else for us. How about a young romantic triangle? How about a murder mystery with an actual trial? Maybe some social class conflict?? Whoops -- no working-class characters on this show...
  12. Please, not yet another addiction story on Y&R. I understand addiction is a serious issue and should be represented on daytime. But over the years far too many Y&R characters have experienced addiction in its various forms -- alcohol, prescription drugs, illegal drugs, gambling, online pornography, etc. Am I missing anything?? Y&R fans need at least a ten-year moratorium on addiction plots.
  13. When Van and Paul moved to New York, did the entire show change locations and move to New York? Or were there still scenes in Barrowsville (I think that was the name of LOL's first location)?? And when Van left New York, did she move directly to Rosehill, or did she return to Barrowsville for a while?
  14. Did I miss an episode or something. I saw the big explosion at the end of yesterday's show. And then today, there's no mention of the explosion, and everybody comes back to the hotel room. It's like an entire episode is missing.
  15. Thank you for the response.
  16. Well, DRW50 indicated that these comments were made in the early 1990s, so that was still during the Marland era. Both Gwen and adult Casey were many years later. And I don't recall Billy Ross at all, so no idea in which decade he appeared. Perhaps the Bills and the Billys were very minor characters -- perhaps even under-fives. Who knows?
  17. Hmm. I wonder which characters they were referring to. At the moment, I don't recall who Bill and/or Billy may have been.
  18. I don't believe MBE was ever on contract at ATWT (If I am wrong about that, please let me know). So without having the actor on contract, it always seemed to me TPTB were reluctant to write any stories for her. She seemed to come and go for short periods for the better part of a decade, but only as a supporting character -- as most non-contract players did at that time. MBE played a more mature Sierra with more self-confidence than the character had displayed under Finn Carter, and I enjoyed MBE very much in the role. Plus she had chemistry with Liz Hubbard, Martha Byrne, and especially Hunt Block. MBE's Sierra didn't take any crap from Craig, and had no patience for Craig's return to being a cad. MBE would have also made an interesting Betsy Stuart Andropolis recast. But there would have been no reason to bring back Betsy unless the actor was on contract. And I don't believe MBE was interested in a contract role in New York. Again, if I am mistaken about MBE never having a contract at ATWT, let me know.
  19. Duh, yes it was John Silva. Sorry...
  20. It just hit me that on Dark Shadows, Dr Woodard's first name was Dave. And of course during the same period, we had David Collins. So this is one of very few examples of a soap opera having two characters with the same first name during the same time. The only other examples of this of which I am aware were: Y&R in the early-1990s had both John Abbott and John Cena, and ATWT in the early-1990s had both John Dixon and John Eldridge. Can anyone think of any other examples of this?
  21. Do you ever wonder if literally anyone is watching The Doctors on RetroTV currently? I don't see any chatter online about the show, and haven't for several years. Pre-Covid, we had such lively discussions about the show both here on SON, and in the Facebook groups. It all seems rather over now.
  22. I do have high expectations for writing in soap operas, however I am not the person who suggested the absolute details of political reality should be included in the political storyline. That was someone else. Creative license is used in all writing genres (as you know). And using creative license does not equal low quality writing, in my opinion, as long as believability is maintained. And when I notice bad writing on daytime, I don't just shrug it off and say "it's just a soap opera." I say -- "That was some really bad writing and they should have done better." I tend to do that for any soap opera that I care about. But again, I think you and I are in agreement about the political details issue.
  23. I will happily agree to disagree. I'm not a particularly argumentative person. But why avoid my question? I'lll repeat: Would anyone ever say, "It's just a primetime drama?" Or "It's just a movie?" Or "it's just a Broadway play?" So when someone says, "it's just a soap opera," are you are not offended by that?
  24. Sounds like an excuse to have low expectations to me. So I don't mind if we disagree. But let me be clear -- I do have an understanding the format. Would anyone ever say, "It's just a primetime drama?" Or "It's just a movie?" Or "it's just a Broadway play?" Frankly, I can't believe anyone would defend that sort of comment regarding soap operas.
  25. You're right. In fact, "It's just a soap" NEVER works. Having low expectations of a television show because "it's just a soap" is insulting to a genre that is almost a century old (including radio serials). And it is insulting to the fans. Personally, I want and expect the soap operas I watch to be written as well and as intelligently as possible.
