  1. Mason’s feuding with CC later in the series was fine. Even when they got along, they went back and forth. I wouldn’t say they completely buried the hatchet until the last year of the show. However, Mason was treating everyone like crap once the Dobson’s returned, not just CC. He had definitely graduated past town pariah well past then and I didn’t buy Pamela causing that regression.

It's interesting how viewers can watch the same material and have a different reaction. Carrington Garland is my Kelly. Not taking away from Robin Wright, but I gravitated more towards Garland. I never had a favourite Mason. They were all good actors, and at one point, they all had nonsense storylines to get through.

I think each actress played a completely different version of Kelly. Your preferences almost depended on which of her you liked the most.

Hey, I am not a regular poster here so if y'all have seen this, sorry,  if I'm duplicating. Because of a stunt DAYS just pulled with an actor changing from one role to another in adjacent scenes, we got off onto other such stunts, ...

DAYS 1 Bo to another Bo

DAYS 1 Jack to another Jack

And, now an Australian in my forum has made me aware of a different International version of the change from Terry Lester/Mason to Gordon Thomson/Mason ...

Watch all the way through to see the second, different version.

I recall this and it was pretty notable when it happened. In Santa Barbara’s case, I think what caused the abrupt change was that they didn’t realize Terry Lester’s contract expired and he left the show since he wasn’t told about a renewal. They had to scramble to find a new Mason and have him pick up the storyline immediately. The first time Mason was recast (Terry Lester and Gordon Thompson were Mason’s #2 and 3), they did write him off for a few months before bringing on a new actor.

I had forgotten until today that Kristen Meadows said she left SB because of death threats from Cruz/Eden fans.

It doesn’t surprise me that this happened since that fanbase was huge and very vocal but was that why she left? Tori was on the show for at least 2 years past being their interloper if not longer. I actually didn’t know she left by choice because it seemed like they were struggling for a place for her towards the end of her run and just mixing her up with other random supporting characters who were on the outskirts of the main SLs. That happened a lot with characters who were initially brought on as a foe of one of the Capwell family members and they almost all slowly faded away once that storyline wrapped up and they moved to the c storylines. I didn’t mind the exit because I think her character was flop. When she was getting focus, she wasn’t very likable and she didn’t have chemistry with anyone.

  5. They seriously struggled with what to do with Augusta when Lionel wasn’t around. I know why she chose to leave after her first run and why she was fired in the 90s but I wonder why they had those other stretches where one was around but the other wasn’t. I’m watching some episodes from 89 and I’m not sure if they explained why she left town. Once Julia and Mason reunited, she was barely seen and then she was gone entirely until she appeared a year later as that mobster’s widow. I think the Lockridges coming and going like they did hurt the show because they had to be the most popular family second to the Capwells and I found Lionel/Augusta’s relationship way more interesting than CC/Sophia’s.

  6. I felt the same way about the Lockridges. Lionel and Augusta were great but I never connected much with Warren or Laken no matter who was playing them. The first Warren looked and sounded like Lionel but I found him dull, the second one was even worse, and Jack Wagner was playing Jack Wagner. Whereas with the Capwells, Mason, Eden, and sometimes Kelly all drew me in at one time or another. Ted was the only odd one out for me. It made it a lot easier to center the show around them

  7. Were they teasing Julia and Gina’s brother, Mac Blake, romantically? I noticed that they shared a lot of bonding scenes together that were a lot of a regular friendship. They seemed like a random duo and Mac was the first one who suspected Mason was cheating on her. Not that it went anywhere, he quickly disappeared from her circle after that and then left a few months later, which was typical for many Capwell adjacent characters.

The Julia/Dash rape storyline felt so lazy and offensive. It's as if they didn't know what to do with the two characters so they fell back and the rape trope. Once the rape happened, the storyline really became so unsavory and offensive with Julia kidnapping Dash, Dash holding Julia down again, and then all the rapist as erotic dream fodder when the Dobsons took over. Gibbs and Grahn did have chemistry, and it's a shame that the writers lost interest in the character of Dash and his story. It felt like they just used Dash's story to kill off Constance Marie's character.

On the surface level, I got what they were trying to do. Most rape victims are attacked by someone they know and not a stranger. The date rape, he said/she said scenario was a fairly new concept on TV. I didn’t even mind him being acquitted because that’s a likely scenario.

He’s a young, attractive guy, Julia and him were close leading up to it and she slept with him once before. A lot of people would also look at him and think why would he rape someone when he could easily find a woman who voluntarily want to date him. Where they got me was that he should have exited after the trial. They were clearly trying to sell that what he did wasn’t as bad as the rapes they showed before and it was. I think they were also trying to sell an insulting message that Julia might have deserved it to an extent for leading him on.

  9. Watching the months leading up to Dash raping Julia and man, they really squandered the chemistry between Timothy Gibbs and Nancy. Was Dash always planned to be a long term character or did they change their mind later on because I can’t fathom why they thought he would work after this SL.

The way they portrayed him subsequently kind of confirmed that and I remember being annoyed by anyone who they turned into a Dash defender. I also don’t buy Augusta, before the rape, encouraging Julia to pursue a casual thing with him. She wanted her to move on but Augusta is bright enough to see that Dash was hopelessly in love with Julia and the problems that could lead to when it was obvious that Julia didn’t feel the same way. He wasn’t hiding his feelings very well. Everyone could tell.

😲 We could have gotten Lane Davies back?! Wow. Missed opportunity, but I respect Davies' decision to not return.

LD was the best Mason but I’ve come to appreciate GT’s Mason a lot upon my rewatch. He played a side with Julia that I don’t think LD was ever willing to. It was obvious how much he loved and was devoted to Julia even when they were apart and it made me buy Julia taking him back in a way I had much more trouble swallowing with Lane’s Mason. He played things much more aloof and they definitely relied on the actors’ chemistry. Mason/Julia’s relationship definitely had their toxic elements but there had to be that underlying pull there for me to buy Julia giving him a millionth chance.

  11. While IA that ED’s Kelly was the worst Kelly, I didn’t find CG all that impressive and found myself tuning her out during my rewatch (and she was on nonstop). She also looked younger than her age where RW looked older. I don’t know, I just don’t think her Kelly did much other than annoy me and I never sympathized with her character or was interested in her stories. Her getting a new guy every couple months probably didn’t help matters.

I know I've heard people complain about how Mason and C.C. were getting along at that point, but wasn't Mason's animosity with his father crucial to his character? Similar to how fans struggle when Sami Brady isn't actively flailing about her mother and John Black.

I didn’t think Mason and CC had completely buried the hatchet during the time Terry Lester played him. Mason getting involved with Capwell Industries on the Oasis project did involve some conflict between them and part of Julia’s early reservations at Mason getting involved with the business was due in part to how things always blow up between them and it causes Mason to self destruct.

However, when GT took over, they started leaning into Mason lashing out at the entire family and most of the town, not just CC. He got pretty insufferable and regressed. All of the conflict also seemed to vanish as soon as Mason and Julia reunited. All of a sudden, he got along with everyone again and was able to take over the company with no issues and he and CC got along until the show wrapped.

What were people's impressions of Sasha in the freezer? I'm seeing it for the first time and I'm rolling. Julia and NLG are so funny. Her comedic timing is perfect. It isn't the Julia I've always known, but it's easier for me to think of this show as SB 2.0.

I thought it was hilarious, especially when they had her singing. However, it was definitely campy and Julia going along with Mason’s dumb plan wasn’t in character so I could why some had issues with it. It also had some pretty big effects on them later down the line.

What was the point of Kelly getting involved with a pianist who was married to Deborah Adair?

He died in bed with her, the story was similar to the one Dobsons wrote for Dee Stewart and Peter Simon's Ian.

Everything started and ended within a few weeks.

I guess so Robert could save her? I didn’t like that storyline either. Wasn’t he a friend of the family (or CC’s friend anyway) and the wife could clearly tell something was brewing between them? Kelly had so many LOs or potential LOs during that period that it got a bit exhausting.

1984 when it started was definitely rocky. For me it got better when Eden joined but honestly I wasn't into the early storylines much.

    Unless you're a Kelly fan, which I wasn't.

I was never a big Kelly fan either and probably would have dropped the show if she was the main female lead. She always came off as either a spoiled princess or damsel in distress and those archetypes never appealed to me. SB had a lot of wealthy characters but Kelly in particular seemed like she floated through life, was great at everything, and well liked outside of drama with guys. Well at least until ED’s version where they did a complete 180 and wrote her as super career focused to the detriment of a personal life but she was annoying in a different way.

So THAT Was the Capwell Zone. Huh. Bizarre

I’ve heard people rave over that ep but it wasn’t my cup of tea. I didn’t get the whole thing with Mason and Julia as aliens and I never warmed up to Greg so seeing his reactions to the various Capwells was meh. I only enjoyed the actual scenes that they were actually observing because they were a slightly exaggerated version of each character.

I'm just finished Mason and Julia's first wedding. Milk, butter, meat. Still cracks me up. On to their honeymoon. Can I just say that if my groom had shoved me out of a plane, I would have been single again! I love Mason so much, but my line in the sand is being shoved out of a perfectly good airplane!

Lol I found that so random. Mason/Julia were not the type of couple I could ever picture skydiving and landing on a remote island for their honeymoon and they did it twice if I recall. Whatever adventures they ended up on were always more on the unplanned or unwilling side.

  18. I didn’t mind Cruz/Eden but I didn’t find them compelling to watch either. They were too saccharine for me and it did seem like Eden was destined to be a messier character when she first debuted so I got bored with her after a while. When it came to the show’s bigger pairings, Mason/Julia, Lionel/Augusta, and Keith/Gina were much more fun to watch for me.

  19. Watching Christy Duvall’s rape storyline for the first time and hoping it gets better. Maybe it’s through the 2022 lens but so far, everyone is annoying me.

While we know Ted is innocent, he’s still a moron ignoring everyone’s advice and confronting Christy multiple times hoping to get her to change her mind. I like Mary but I never saw her in this storyline. She seems to be really unaware of what was going on in her family and I can’t tell if the ott way she’s acting now is misplaced guilt, though it’s probably just more for angst with Mason.

I actually felt the most for Christy during this and I don’t think we’re supposed to. Yes, she was lying and isn’t particularly likeable but her upbringing and everyone in her life sucks and she tried to get away from her family only for them to show up in Santa Barbara. Her mom and sister were in such denial about Steve at the beginning that who knows whether they would have even believed her had she told the truth.

  20. Upon rewatch, I think I find Warren/BJ even grosser than I did when I initially watched. I think back then, I mostly just found them dull and thought BJ was annoying but there’s so many red flags.

They really had a 19 year old who had a history of being sexually abused by her parents’ friend get involved with a friend of her bio dad who was also her professor? She needed serious therapy, not a relationship with a 30 year old playboy. Not to mention, I found JW’s Warren a bit insufferable and couldn’t figure out why he warranted 2 separate love triangles in the span of a year.

  21. Angela was one of the few 90s additions that I actually enjoyed but man, did they write her like the designated loser despite being young, gorgeous, and smart/calculating. Not to mention the actress had chemistry with everyone. She came on with that dud of a husband who only got with her after her sister, who he actually loved, died and then he was mooning over Julia and ignored her. Then she got with Warren who fell for BJ and they ended for that drip of a pairing. And later that cringey semi-love triangle with Ted and CC who were both in love with other women. She definitely could have been utilized better.

  22. How did anyone believe that Mason fathered Tori’s kid? Especially once everything about Samantha became common knowledge knowing Chip was older than her. I know Eden questioned it briefly and Cruz seemed to want to be willfully ignorant but I just think it’s a hard sell for everyone to buy that Mason and Tori were secretly dating for months and sleeping together while he was also helping Julia father her kid.

  23. While I’m in the middle of this rewatch, I recall Lane Davies’ old interviews about he didn’t want his want his character boxed in as a husband and family guy and preferred the scheming. I might have gotten it if his pairings were happy and drama free but they were angst ridden and his relationships with Mary and Julia grounded the character.

I thought his issues with CC and times he lashed out at his family made him look petty and more and more immature as he got older and if that had been the main focus of his character, I would have quickly lost interest in him. When the Dobsons came back in the 90s and the reverted Mason back to his old ways while GT was playing him, I was pretty annoyed by him most of the time.

  24. Given the stories we heard about Augusta and Lionel’s marriage, I’m surprised Julia remained so close to him. I know there ended up being issues on both sides but they made it sound like a lot of her behavior started after he kept having affairs. I know she has her own issues with Augusta at times, but still.
