Had a dream that I was watching an intense scene where Anna Stuart's Mary Smythe was laying into Erica about a large donation Erica made to the Chandler Foundation. An amazing match of wits between Stuart and Lucci. There was no context whatsoever, but I was so energized that I was going to come post here, "Wow, AMC was LIT today! Maybe our show is back?"

Such a weird random dream, and I legitimately hadn't thought about AMC in forever. I need to stop drinking bourbon before bed.

I occasionally still have dreams that AMC is back.  Mine revolve more around Brooke versus Erica over Dimitri.  But I mainly drink wine before bed, specifically Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon.  Happy 48th Anniversary to my fave soap!

  2. I'm still watching and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. I wish we had seen the funeral, but I liked how they showed the impact of Derek's death on the hospital staff throughout the year. Also, even though it was easy to predict Meredith would have another baby, I loved how they contrasted her running off with Ellis's when she was pregnant with Maggie and showed that Meredith not only isn't her mother but makes better decisions than her. When Meredith named the new child Ellis, it made sense to me because she finally understood everything her mother went through when they were living in Boston.

This last episode was excellent. I loved when Amelia confronted Mer about not letting Derek's family know he was dying and April showing up at the hospital with the tow truck to save the guy's life was epic!

  3. Up until this episode, I've really been enjoying this season. It seemed like the writers had hit their groove with Callie & Arizona's breakup and the death of Jackson & April's baby, but I'm really disappointed they felt the need to kill Derek off! I know Patrick Dempsey wanted to work less, but they could've done what ER did when George Clooney left and kept Derek alive working in Washington. It felt like an insult to us long-time viewers to watch Derek narrate what his doctors were doing wrong and knowing he wasn't going to survive the surgery. I will tune in for the funeral, which better include Christina, Addison and Derek's mother and sisters, but I'm not sure if I'll keep watching after and I never imagined I'd quit this show.

  4. Tad and Dixie would always be the end game. Even if Tad and Gloria had worked as a couple, she would've been nothing more than a plot device/stumbling block to an inevitable Tad/Dixie reunion. Before his pairing with Dixie, I thought they were going to head in the Tad/Barbara direction. Knight and Susan Pratt had terrific chemistry and all that great banter. It was all very adult and more sophisticated than the Tad/Dixie pairing would ever be.

I also thought they were going with Tad & Barbara until he got involved with Dixie. It could've been interesting if Barbara had been involved with both men during the Tad/Dixie/Brooke/Adam storyline.

I watched the first Dec 1986 episode posted and I was surprised at how much of it I enjoyed - pretty much all of it, other than Tad, who seemed incredibly sanctimonious and hypocritical even at that time. At least there was a good scene with Tad and Marian. It's great to see that she did last as long as she did after Liza was written out.

The production values look so lush compared to what we have now, and I loved the background music in the scenes with Natalie at the stranger's apartment. (I will say I don't think she would have fallen for that ruse, or drank the champagne).

Was that Christian Slater in the mountain lodge scenes?

I really like Taylor Miller's work as Nina in this period - it is so sharp and so fresh, a mix of modern and old soap melodrama, and it holds up very well.

Why did Donna have a huge tear up the back of her blouse? Was that fashion?

On the other hand, I kind of liked Natalie's silk pants suit.

I guess I can see why AMC recast Skye (they did fire Byron, didn't they?), but she's very entertaining. I love that plucky Australian accent, bopping around in that huge blue beret that is nearly bigger than her head. I can't imagine how fans reacted at the time when the very subdued Robin Christopher took her place.

This Josh character that Stuart and Adam said left - was he ever onscreen?

Yes, that was Christian Slater. IIRC, Cliff eventually saved his life.

ITA that Natalie was too quick to believe the job offer over the phone and drink the champagne, but I also can see why she'd want to think there was some way out of the Adam/Palmer situation.

Donna's dress was the fashion once upon a time. I've never been a fashionista so I can't explain what women or men thought was attractive about a fully covered chest and hole in the back.

As much as I grew to like Robin Christopher, I really liked the original Skye and I never knew why they recast the part.

Thanks. I must have just missed him.

I liked Hilary so much in this too - her last few years on the show where she didn't have to be so dewy-eyed brought out some backbone in Carmen Thomas' work. It's a shame they never had her return for the Damon story.

It truly was a shame that Hillary never came back!

Thanks for posting this and the other articles!

  5. Pratt talks about AMC in the interview he basically said that what Lucci said about him telling the actor's forget what they know about their character wasn't true, that he never said that.

He says he has no regrets about his time at AMC, he didn't always have support or support in the right direction, but didn't notice it at the time. He didn't agree strongly with moving the show to L.A., he said he thought "wow we're letting accountants figure out the future of the show", and they were uprooting every actor and blamed it on him cause he lived in Los Angeles.

He loves where Adam killed Stuart, he thought that was a great story, that the audience wanted to kill him. He loved doing the gay marriage. He supposes there are things he should regret, but doesn't. He filled up fives shows a week with exciting stuff. He thought the show was good when he was there. The only thing he didn't like was when people said, when the show was canceled two years later, that people blamed him and didn't know how you could do that.

He badmouthed and/or dismissed the cast throughout his tenure (the low point being when he went to the press to say they'd better shape up if they're going to work with Jamie Luner, or whatever it was), and he's upset he didn't get more support?

The gay marriage story was an insult. An insult. Reese was craving cock before and after that marriage. What a great message to send out.

He's either in denial about what he said or trying to appease the Sony executives who hired him that he won't destroy Y&R.

I didn't think I could dislike Pratt any more than I already did, but his ego is so tremendous he doesn't regret any of his stories, including Adam killing Stuart, Bianca's one-day farce of a marriage and Erica bedding Ryan?!?!blink.png

  6. I love Brandon's secretary having no time for Erica.

Tricia Pursley reminds me of Rebecca Mader with that hairstyle. It's much more flattering than the short 83-84 style I remember.

Mark grossing her out talking about having kids w/her mom...tongue.png .

Palmer being Palmer! Sean being a sleaze... I don't remember Betsy being a homewrecker.

The never seen Roger Kingsley mentions. I've never heard him spoken about, I saw the name in a book. I wonder if they ever planned to cast him. It would have been funny if Roger were Larry Lau. Then we would never have had Natalie Ross' Enid Nelson.

Erica's lots of fun here, although I can see why she exhausted the people in her life. "The world loves lovers!" She had it all but this seemed to only encourage her naivete. I laughed when she said that even though Sara wore dowdy clothes, she must appreciate money. I also really enjoyed her brief scene with Mark. I want to see more of that relationship.

Not playing Nina's fantasy as camp (the way many fantasy sequences go) was a wise choice, as it helps explain her decision. Those scenes were great, although I did laugh when she was zoning out at the phone repairman.
I wonder how fans at the time felt seeing Nancy Frangione (ex-Tara) getting frisky in the bathtub.

Palmer is so controlling and mean and dismissive to Donna. And this is before all that with her and Chuck sleeping together, right? You know you usually just see this era in terms of him controlling Nina as Daisy and Myra cluck at him, but there's a whole other, very unpleasant side. This also reinforces to me even more that he wouldn't have been with Opal long-term.

I can see why some fans at the time seemed to have little patience for Devon. She's a huge mess. At first I wondered if they were hinting at pairing her with Mark (her ex-stepfather).

I really wish someone would post more episodes from this era.

I loved how naive Erica was about her affair with Brandon; it was obvious to everyone around her that he wasn't leaving Sarah but Erica just didn't believe it.

Palmer was such a control freak to everybody but Daisy who didn't let him manipulate her. This was before Donna slept with Chuck in Switzerland.

Nina's fantasy was a great way to show why she agreed to go along with Sybil's scheme.

As a youngster, I was riveted by Betsy and Wally fighting their feelings for the sake of Devon's mental health, but seeing the scenes here as an adult this story just seems so lame.

  7. Where is the best place online to discuss the Prospect Park months of this show?

    Probably here

I'd agree that it's here. We had a separate discussion thread for each episode back when they were first airing. I'd love to read your opinion of them!

  8. I finally managed to watch the interview with Agnes. It's sad to see her struggling to get her words out and she didn't seem to understand when the interviewer was asking about people who became famous after being on her shows instead of celebrities who wanted to be on them. I am glad she mentioned writing her memoirs and I can't wait to read them!

  9. I saw this a couple of days ago, it wouldn't allow me to download. Who is the blonde with Brad talking about Marco? I couldn't make out her name when I saw it. Thanks for putting it up! I'm starting to learn how to post pictures and things, but I'm pretty computer illiterate!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think her name was Astrid.

  10. Clint & Viki was my favorite OLTL couple, and I quit watching when the idiot writers had Viki turn down Clint's proposal and he married Lindsay (yecch!) on the rebound! That was in 1997. I could never accept the idea of another actor (even a good actor like Jerry verDorn, who I liked on GL) as Clint, and was dismayed that they had his Clint inexplicably become an Asa clone- that completely flew against the entire history of the character! The Clint I remember was a strong yet sensitive man- he actually ran away fro home as a teenager because he didn't want to be like his father! Clint Ritchie let it be known he did not like playing the 'bad guy' in the Billy Douglas/Sloan Carpenter story. Yes, he could be difficult on the set, but he had a deep respect for Erika Slezak, and it showed in their scenes.

Actually it was 1998. Remember it was the week of the sh'w 30th anniversary when Viki came back from a cruise and was going to accept Clint's proposal so she gathered the family around and Clint walked in with Lindsey Rapaport "the new Mrs. Clint Buchanan." Viki was so humiliated and later that night Dorian came by to comfort her.

I actually started watching OLTL again after a break for a few years due to the Clint/Lindsay relationship and Viki's reaction to it. I'm smiling just thinking about it!

ITA about Jerry VerDorn. As great as he was on GL as Ross Marler, he just never embodied any aspect of Clint at all. They should've brought him on as a new character who could've gotten involved with both Viki & Dorian.

Anyone know who HBS was talking about that always used his script in scenes so she threw them away after a rehersal?

    http://www.paleycenter.org/2010-fall-members-one-life-to-live

I think it was Phil Carey, but don't quote me on that.

  11. Thanks for clarifying that - I was sure that Dorothy Lyman had not been asked back in 1989. I wonder what things would have been like had Dorothy Lyman reprised Opal instead of Jill Larson being cast.

I have to wonder if they would've paired her with Palmer; I just can't picture them together.

  12. So since we're discussing Agnes' book and tell-all books, what do you hope to read about in Agnes' book? What would you like to know more about in a tell-all book?

For Agnes' book, I'd love to know, specifically about AMC:

    - What stories she found the hardest to write

    - What characters she created and ended up not liking very much or if she created a character who then went another direction because of the actor/actress cast for the part

    - How much interference she had in story-telling from TPTB at ABC, from the EP, and from the actors

    - Who were the actors who tried to dictate story over the years and what did they want?

    - What her writing process is like

    - What plans she had for AMC 2.0

    - What ideas she had for the show over the years that didn't happen for one reason or another

    - Any stories she wished she'd told differently on the show

    - What she thought about the stories other writers wrote

    - What she plans to do in the future and what future, if any, she sees for AMC

For a tell-all book about AMC, I'd love to know:

    - Who is most or least like their character

    - Which actors or actors/crew were romantically involved behind the scenes

    - Who tried to interfere with the writers?

    - Who tried to use the fans to stir up drama and drive story

    - Who (aside from Michael Nader) was dealing with addiction behind the scenes

    - Who were the biggest divas/pains to deal with behind the camera

    - Which stories or pairings did TPTB think would be big hits that were flops and vice versa

    - Which supercouple pairings really disliked each other off-screen (aside from Kate Collins and James Kiberd)

    - Funny mishaps or bloopers on set

    - Interesting stories from fan events

For Agnes' book, I'd most like to know what stories she wanted to tell that were rejected by the network, how she felt about focus groups, her honest opinion of McTavish & Pratt (I know she's probably too much of a lady to say anything as negative as I'd like) and if she thinks it would be feasible for AMC to return in some form after the PP/ABC lawsuit ends.

For the tell-all, I'd like to read more about what it was like backstage especially in the drug-fueled 1980s and during Pratt's run.

  13. It makes me smile to know that Agnes is writing a memoir. I think it's long overdue, and I'll happily pre-order it when it's available! Unfortunately, I don't know we'll get any dishy, gossipy stuff from Agnes either. I think it will be interesting and insightful and hopefully will contain gems of wisdom about writing and being a writer, but I'm not going to hold my breath that it will be a tell-all sort of book.

Damn it, SOMEONE needs to write a tell all about AMC!

Yeah, I'd love to see a tell-all about AMC or any of the other soaps like the one that was done the past year on OLTL. Talk about a must-read!!!

I'm looking forward to reading Agnes' memoir, but I'd also love a tell-all about AMC!

  14. Amy, I assume your comment was directed at Khan, but I'm going to reply anyway. I thought Erica had great chemistry with both brothers, so it wasn't that I necessarily thought one was drastically better than the other. I believe that for the writers, Travis was a means to an end, which was giving Erica a child born onscreen. If you go back and watch the crazy dream/comatose vision/whatever Erica had right before Bianca was born, out of all the men in her life, Erica is most firmly connected to Mike Roy, even making love to him in her dream (and oddly enough, then all the other men in her life and appear again and I guess watched or something wacko.png), and the only real appearance Travis makes in that entire two episode trippy dream is when he's on a bicycle built for two with Barbara, ignoring Erica. Erica's baby is what matters most to her in the dream. If the subconscious speaks the truth, then perhaps Erica knew even then that Travis still had a close connection to Barbara.

I would have liked to see Erica and Travis' first marriage go in a different direction than it ultimately did. I'm not sure the writers really knew what to do with Travis after Erica had Bianca, but I do think he and Barbara were good together and played off each other very well. Their relationship was complex and interesting, and when Barbara came back on the show in 2007 or so, it was obvious that their marriage in Seattle had been pretty rocky and complicated, and I would have liked to have seen more of that. I still think killing off Travis was a really, really bad idea.

Ultimately, I don't think either Montgomery brother was really the right man for Erica, but I sure enjoyed the story. I just got tired of the endless together/apart cycle of Erica and Jack by the time it was all over.

I never liked Travis at all, but I loved the chemistry between Jack & Erica; however, I have to agree that in the end Jack was too self-righteous for their relationship to work long-term. I just wish the writers had explored more of their differences instead of throwing other people between them like when both Jeff & Barbara showed up.

    Best FOR Brooke? Tom.

Best for a complicated, dramatic relationship that makes for entertaining television? Adam.

ITA! Brooke was married to Tom when I started watching so they'll always have a special place in my heart, but I did love the drama Adam brought to her life.

  15. What were your own personal favorite hangouts in Pine Valley?

The Chateau, McKay's, the Boutique, the Glamorama.

The Chicken Shack? Is that how Tad came to be dressed in a chicken suit when he proposed to Dixie?

Yes because their favorite food was chicken fingers from the Chicken Shack.
