IA. It seemed as if AMC just didn't know how to style or light Marcy Walker. On Santa Barbara, with her ultra-long hair and soft-spoken intensity (ignoring those 80s clothes), she glowed with fairy-tale beauty.

It's clear that Santa Barbara was by no means the perfect soap. When it was first launched, it underwent a couple of different CCs and many shifts in focus as the Perkins and many of the Lockridges were later phased out. I think SB was NBC Daytime's equivalent of a Dynasty or a Dallas. They threw a huge amount of publicity and money into the project and promoted it a great deal, even when the ratings were, relatively speaking, not great. And yes, that 3pm slot against GH was probably killer (but a 12 or 1pm slot might have been even worse).

Because so much money was riding on the show -- and because they kept acquiring big names from other soaps in order to draw in viewers -- the Dobsons were probably buffeted by network and producer interference from the get-go. This likely contributed to the variation in quality and sudden switches in SL and new characters (although I have fond memories of Charles Pratt's stint as HW). And I do remember Wednesday episodes being rather weak while Mondays and Fridays were amazing. Santa Barbara was a big believer in Cliffhanger Friday!

Despite whatever problems it had, I strongly feel that golden-era SB, while not 100% perfect, was perfect for me. I'm not just relying on my memories of the show. Some of the YouTube clips are even more powerful on second viewing. Great dialogue writers and unapologetically romantic HWs... a forward-thinking production crew... hugely talented actors who embody their roles completely... all this produced magic. At least it did for me. I got goosebumps watching the show when I was little. Now older and much more cynical, I still get them looking at some of the clips. When it was on-form, few shows could touch it. In particular, SB has spoiled me completely as far as depicting romance on a soap is concerned (though GH came super-close in the mid-90s). The Cruz/Eden/Robert/Kelly SL being a case in point. I still find some of the clips incredibly moving to watch in a way that soaps today just aren't, which is probably why I only watch the odd clip every once in a while! An intense viewing experience which I can't really describe adequately... perhaps that's why it only lasted 8 years. It burned too brightly, too quickly. I'm glad I was around during the great years, though.

Cat, do you think Marcy looked ugly during her initial years as Liza Colby on All My Children?

Going back to Santa Barbara, do you remember when Eden was paralyzed and left for dead in Utah?  Do you remember Eden losing the use of her legs all over again after partially regaining her ability to walk?  Was it painful for you to see Eden with crutches or a cane?  Was it painful for you to see her in a wheelchair?

You didn't enjoy '93 of GL?

Marcy Walker joined the cast of GL in '93, but her Tangie Hill character didn't catch on.  I imagine that a significant number of GL fans felt like Marcy/Tangie was being forced down their collective throat.

    That's not offensive at all.

Garland certainly looked enough like Walker to play her sister, and resembled Robin Wright enough to visually fit in as Kelly. (Actually, when you look closely, she's kind of like a cross between the two.) But I think what's most important is that she had the right energy & personality, as well as great chemistry with her co-stars, to succeed in the role. MacArthur was a stop-gap recast - just not memorable, feeling more like a place-holder......

And Eileen Davidson was like an experiment gone wrong - an attempt to reinvent the role. It wasn't necessary, and it was a shame to expend Garland, who had already accomplished winning over viewers... a tough thing to do, considering who originated the part.

No offense, but I wonder if Marcy Walker's decision to leave Santa Barbara in 1991 cost Carrington Garland her job on the soap that same year.

The original specials definitely used only people who were currently on TV, but I honestly doubt that's an option these days. Your biggest TV shows/stars are no longer on ABC, CBS, or NBC, and so many of them would probably never sign on to do something like this. Plus, the TV landscape is just so big. Look at the cast list for the first BOTNS, and you have Farrah Fawcett, Penny Marshall, Robert Conrad - people who were HUGE at the time. Even if you didn't watch their shows, you knew who they were. We don't have that anymore.

    Check this out.

So many of AMC's early 80s hairstyles were questionable. Which, I know, it's the 80s, but still. I've been watching some episodes from 1983-1985, in order (but mostly nonconsecutive), off and on, and I hate Devon's hair, and Donna also had a similar cut for a while.

Watching these episodes have really really made me hate Tad and the whole idea of Tad as the lovable cad/rogue. He was a piece of sh!t. Darnell Williams was just as ticky and over-the-top back then as he was when he returned near the end, even moreso in the early 80s. I never realized how incredibly sexy Laurence Lau was in so many ways. Greg was a bit of a goober, but he had a ready strength about him that was appealing, plus LL was hitting 30 and still was hotter than most soap guys who were younger than him at the time.

I also never realized how much a loose cannon Tom was. I mean, I know they introduced him in 1977 with the whole football player, hot-headed Catholic thing, but I guess I expected him to grow up much more by the 80s. It's crazy to see Brooke mixing it up with Tom and Mark knowing that by the end of the decade she'll be involved with Tad, who was still written as a kid at the time.

I'm currently in the era where Phoebe, Langley, and Palmer are trying to stop Adam from building a "gambling mall" in Pine Valley, and Ruth Warrick is running sh!t, as to be expected. When Phoebe and her supporters are faced with the task of getting 5,000 signatures in a day and a half, everyone feels defeated, but Phoebe perks them up and tosses out the most delicious "Watch out!" as they resolve to win and the screen fades to black. RW was a TREASURE. Then later, she compares the newly-married Mrs. Erica Chandler to Eva Braun at the Glamorama in front of everyone. Good stuff.

All My Shadows, did you ever watch Santa Barbara?  If so, do you remember seeing Marcy Walker with long hair?  You have to excuse me.  I can't unsee images of Marcy with short hair.  She didn't like having her hair cut so short for the Liza Colby role in the early '80s.  She thought she looked "ugly" and "like a shaved rat."  If you don't believe me, check out this video.

Did you mean to say, "Marcy Walker was offered all the roles," te.?  Keep in mind that she's retired from show business now.

  7. I wonder if Marcy Walker was offered a role on the short-lived primetime soap Central Park West in the mid-1990s.  Both CPW and GL were generally done out of New York, plus both soaps were aired on CBS.  I can't say that Marcy was too happy during her stint as Tangie Hill on GL.  In the end, she rejoined the cast of All My Children as Liza Colby.

    No.

Are you sure, Vee?  I do wonder if Marcy was offered a role on the short-lived primetime soap Central Park West in the mid-1990s.  After all, CPWAll My Children, and Guiding Light were all generally done out of New York.  Also, both CPW and GL were aired on CBS.

  9. Marcy Walker never appeared as her All My Children character Liza Colby on One Life to Live, did she?  I know that Michael E. Knight and David Canary had crossover stints on OLTL as Tad Martin and Adam Chandler, respectively.  Both Tad and Adam were heavily involved with Liza on AMC.

Lynn Harbaugh played Lisa on Y&R... latest?cb=20121020201237&path-prefix=fr

I didn't initially think of them as resembling each other. Now looking closely, I see that there's something with the eyes. But Lynn had this Stevie Nicks / Gypsy vibe...

What would have been better is if they'd found Carrington Garland about 9 months sooner - and kept her about 16 months longer!

No offense, but did Carrington Garland really look that much like Marcy Walker?
