I'm trying to remember if we have this one they are filming...LOL

Seems like it is circa late April '91...? Because Victoria has just moved back to GC and Nina is on the run with lil Phillip?

I don't mean to nitpick, but the Variety obit said that Don had a recurring role on Knots Landing. I suppose he did in his last few episodes, but not his first two seasons. I'm not sure if it has been corrected, but it's always sad to see these simple mistakes get through in respectable publications now.

How about when the headline refers to “Knot’s Landing”… that apostrophe error always annoys me. Such an easy error to spot and fix before publishing

  3. I hope to be surprised that things might improve as I continue with ‘95? I feel like things got better by spring ‘96 for the last strong story “Who Shot Victor” before the show entered the doldrums of late ‘96 into ‘97.

  4. I'm watching chronologically newer eps from the mid 90s... to me, it's so sad, the downward shift in quality from 1994 to 1995, and even specifically December 1994 to January 1995.

I can watch every episode of 1994 (like all previous years) from start to finish. Starting with Jan '95 - I can no longer tolerate certain stories and am forced to FF.

    1994:

Shick: I can deal with them because they're separated. I like Sharon with Matt bc of Eddie Cibrian's evil electric presence.

Phyllis: I have no problem with her because she is so new.  In fact, she's kind of fascinating, in that she only appears in a couple eps during Oct '94, and arrives full-time only mid-Nov '94. And wow, she blows through like a hurricane leading up to the New Year's Eve leading up to the vehicular manslaughter.

Victor and Hope: I ship this couple 100% May '93-July '94. Then their story takes a downward turn to a troubled pregnancy after being married for one month (cliched much?) and I am increasingly frustrated.

    1995:

Shick: I've lost any interest. Still will watch Eddie Cibrian scenes just to see how Matt can cause chaos in their lives.

Phyllis: I can't stand the damage she caused to so many lives and she faces no consequences. I'm done with her and with any related stories. (I know she faces her ghosts while she is in jail in 2002, and at some later point Cricket realizes that Phyllis ran her over... but there are no lasting consequences ever.)

Victor and Hope: the pregnancy turns out ok but now it's Kansas vs. Genoa City...? So many dashed storyline possibilities of Hope claiming her power in any number of ways. I'm not interested in watching her slooooowly decide she prefers farm life.

Thank god for the continuing John/Jill divorce story! While John and Mamie being romantic feels icky to watch, I'll endure it to savor the overall story. Just finished 2/1/95, and there were poignant scenes of Jill recalling her Jan '93 courtship with John, and holding Billy close before heading to the the custody hearing. The show continuing the use of the classic background music cues really elevates the scenes.

Will continue to watch: anything Barber/Winters related. Anything Mari Jo related. I guess anything Blade/Rick related even though that story is gross.

EDIT: Oh! of course anything Lauren-related even though her time on the show is dwindling.

Will struggle through: anything Jack and Luan related. Their romance is so barf-worthy and Luan/Keemo/Mai dialogue is so stilted... but I appreciate the representation for whatever it's worth.  And I guess Ryan and Nina bc I appreciate that they had a period of stability before Nina's major 1996 decline.

Will have to also FF through: Cole and Victoria and... Jeri? Was this meant to truly be a love triangle...?

  5. Is there a clip somewhere from 12/23/94 with Katherine arriving to see Nina, Ryan and Phillip? I remember seeing it once, but it's not in the Vault clips or full eps.

    ...Or did he?

🤣 Walter could always come back from the dead to haunt Nikki!

However, I did see the 1/4/80 ep when I visited the Paley Center for TV, in their viewing room. This ep features Nikki, Rose and Vince in a car with Walter, who is looking pretty darn dead, and in fact Rose was blasting the heat to make it harder for the coroner to determine time-of-death. Soon after they dumped the body in an alley, the police came across it. So... I think Walter is forever sleeping with the fishes.

Wow thanks to both of you.  I remember Rose De Ville only in Nina's original storyline.  Why was Nikki interacting with her?

Nikki signed up to be a model at Rose’s agency, which turned out to be a front for prostitution. Rose sent Nikki to see a client, who then had a heart attack, so Nikki, Rose and Rose’s henchman Vince had to dump the body. All sorts of complications arose from that, and that’s what happening in the promo.

I decided to check the vault and found an episode from 1980 I’d never seen. It has Bond Gideon as Jill and lots of great scenes with Jill/Liz and the Williams family. It was nice seeing a full episode with Bond so I can get a better feel for her Jill. I feel like Deborah Adair makes perfect sense following Bond in the role. They have a similar look, voice and feel but Adair has more of a leading lady spark.

Also stunned at just how good the quality of this episode is. I wonder where this was sourced from.

That ep (6/16/80) is partially thanks to Bond Gideon's husband! He is a member of a Vintage YR group on Facebook, and over the past years, he's been reaching out trying to find any eps featuring Bond. He said back in the 80s, Bond had VHS tapes she recorded of her appearances, but that an ex-boyfriend took the tapes 😕

A few years back, Bond's husband helped to secure the 4/14/80 and 6/16/80 eps. Don't know exactly what the source was.

  8. I can't believe that Jack is still stringing Mari Jo along as of 12/20/94! And letting her still wear the engagement ring. After he has welcomed Keemo as his son, and had this grand party to introduce Luan to the Abbotts.

I used to have the impression that she was the "villain" for keeping Jack and Luan apart, but now I'm Team #MariJo.

(though she does gets points deducted for keeping Rick's return from the dead a secret...)

PS how can Sharon be on recurring when Matt and Amy are on contract...?

I Remember Nina Describing the Scene Perfectly while Angrily Confronting him about it! so yeah they knew what they were doing and Still did it Anyway, And Why? Phillip was never on the Show for long after that, so they basically Ressurrected him for the sake of doing it 🙄

I think Maria Arena Bell has plans for Thom Bierdz to be a major character in a romance with the lawyer named Rafe, but those plans never came together... mainly due to Thom's lackluster acting. I remember he wrote an article in SOD a few months after his return, explaining and apologizing for his acting choices.

Attempting to list *only* things relevant to current storylines, for benefit of Donna and anyone else who came to Y&R because of Colleen Zenk.

Otherwise, discussion goes on the Y&R history/BTS/articles thread.

John Abbott was married to Dina. (Dina's maiden name unknown?)
They had three children: Jack (Peter Bergman), Ashley (Eileen), and Traci (Beth Maitland).

It was later revealed that Ashley's biofather was someone else, but John never learned this and the info was kept from him for the rest of his life.  Everyone knows now. At any rate, Ashley is an Abbott in every way that matters, regardless of biology.

Dina was bored, left her husband and children, moved to Paris, ran a business, and had a fun and rich life.   Dina later married Marcel Mergeron, so she's referred to as Dina Mergeron.  Dina died of Alzheimer's a few years ago.

John Abbott hired Mamie Johnson to run his household.  She was hired as the maid/cook but because Dina left, Mamie became a mother figure to Jack, Ashley, and especially to Traci.

Several years after Phillip Chancellor II died, Jill married John Abbott.
Jill and John were married twice, long story, won't detail that here.
Even when Jill and John were divorced, Jill was annoyed when John was with someone else.

At some point during all this, Jill became aware that John and Mamie were falling in love.  Jill payed Mamie millions of dollars to leave town, and Mamie left.
This is the Jill/Mamie rivalry/resentment currently playing out onscreen.

Mamie is the aunt of Victoria Rowell's character Drucilla Barber Winters.
Mamie is also the aunt of Drucilla's sister Olivia.
Drucilla died falling into a volcano.  Olivia has been offscreen for ages working for Doctors Without Borders.
    Lily is Drucilla's daughter.
    Devon is Drucilla's adopted son.
    Nate is Olivia's son.

So Mamie is the great-aunt of Lily, Devon, and Nate.
And was a mother-figure to Jack, Ashley, and Traci.

Billy Abbott is the son of John Abbott and Jill.
Billy Abbott would be the halfbrother of Thom Bierdz's character but they never met.

    --------------------------------------------

If you go by date born onscreen,
Chance *should be* (but obviously isn't)
five years older than his uncle Billy.

Jill's first son Phillip Chancellor III (Thom Bierdz) was born in 1976 when she was younger.

Jill's second son Billy Abbott was was born in 1993, late in life to Jill.

Jill's grandson Phillip IV (Chance) was born in 1998 (the same year as Nick Newman).  He should be the same age as Nick Newman and one year younger than Sharon.

But Billy was SORASed a lot when Jason Thompson took over the role.
And Chance was deSORASed a lot when Conner Floyd took over the role.

It has been discussed that their ages are off, and we could vent/discuss it forever with no resolution.  It is what it is, so I won't belabor the point here.  Trying to stay on track with what is *currently* airing in December 2023.

Billy and Chance are about to work together at Chancellor-Winters, so that should be interesting.

Excellent summary, @janea4old, thank you! Just one minor point... Billy Miller was on-screen as Billy Abbott 2009-10 when Thom Bierdz returned as Phillip. I don't know a specific episode, but I imagine that Billy and Phillip shared scenes.

My recollection is that Eve was constantly trying to make Victor "bond" with young Charles Victor during Eve's first run in 1980.  But then again, nothing much during that period of time made a lot of sense.

The little kid (Charles Victor) was blond, and looked nothing at all like Victor.  But then it turned out Eve Howard and Derek Thurston knew each other, and the two of them reconnected to steal Victor's medical records (the vasectomy) and send the file to Julia Newman.   When I learned Derek already knew Eve (and Charles Victor was blond like Derek Thurston), I assumed the kid was Derek Thurston's son.  But then Derek was dumped from the show, and that was that.  lol.

Maybe Joe LaDue's random exit was due to Jeanne Cooper's absence from the majority of the first half of '81 (perhaps because she was in rehab...? she mentions rehab in her memoir but doesn't provide dates).

There was such a set-up in fall '80 to have Kay marooned on the island with Felipe and then seems like it wrapped up in 1-2 eps at the beginning of '81. Would make sense if the writers had to craft a quick exit for JC.

What else is a bit distracting and proves they did retcon some of the Eve/Cole stuff, is that I thought Victor did spend some time with “Cole” (Charles) when he was a kid and I feel Cole would have remembered those encounters?

They did lots of retcons around that time... like in '93 how "crazy Eve" was completely ignored. So it's even stranger that just last week, the show acknowledged "crazy Eve" with that flashback!
