I liked Rhonda, but structurally Amanda makes MP into a workplace drama.  I wonder if it had been too difficult to create situations for all the characters to interact at the apartment complex?  90210 needed the school as a base to meet new people, and I think MP would have become too insular if they only talked around the pool or at Shooters.  So, although I think it is more realistic to have dancers, actors, and creatives all in a Los Angeles based soap, I can empathize with the need to create a work base for added drama.

It was very bizarre and even annoying that after Sandy left there were no characters in the music or film industry.

There's one other wealth-creating aspect that this show might use to explain this family's fame and fortune, even moreso if it's in ATL. Personally, I don't like this idea because it would seem much too copycatted: EMPIRE!!!! I don't think I need to elaborate.

I wouldn't rely on guest stars to promote episodes. Plus which, you can't compare every show with Empire simply because of a Black cast.

We’ve bandied about quite a few names for wishful casting. Ultimately it will be the decision for tptb to make but I want to put another name out there, so if anyone who has an “in” with the development of this soap peeps this, in addition to the names I had mentioned like the likes of Tonya Pinkins, Tamara Tunie, Amelia Marshall, Victoria Rowell, Count Stovall and Petronia Paley, I want to suggest that they do not sleep on the talented and beautiful Loren Lott who was criminally underutilized on Y&R. Because of how little storyline she received, she’s still a relatively fresh face but one with valuable soap experience.
Another name I would suggest is Lamman Rucker whose charisma and magnetism was used an abused during his time on ATWT.

Another thing that I wondered/mused about is what industry/field will the wealthy family(families) make their wealth on. I feel like at least one family should be a haircare magnate, right? There are some opportunities for some gifted hairstylists to really get creative here. Black hair is not just about creative expression, it can also be an art.

The soap I've been developing is about a Black family in the haircare/beauty business! That's funny.

Yes, I don't recall any pre publicity stating that the show was going to be tongue in cheek or satire. Had they done that then maybe viewers/critics might have had adifferent attitude.

Instead we were promised a Peyton Place meets Twin Peaks vibe. Kinda gothic, suspenseful and mysterious, maybe a little off beat.

And what we got amongst other things in the first ep  was Galen Gering and Jesse Metcalfe on location having an episode long conversation...

That's exactly what I was looking forward to. Instead we got overdrawn, exploitative parody. Oh, and lots of rape!

Again, I have to go back to PASSIONS as being the absolute nadir of this genre.  There were bad soaps before PASSIONS, but no soap, IMO, was as bad - not just dull, like pre-Barnabas DS; or generic, like most of LOVING; but flat-out, funky-ass bad - from day damn one as PASSIONS was.  I mean, bad writing, bad acting, bad directing, bad music and sets - that piece of [!@#$%^&*] never should have seen the light of day.

But the truly funny/sad part is how PASSIONS tried to re-brand itself as tongue-in-cheek satire after they realized how much of a thud they had landed within the general soap watching community.  "It's campy, because it's supposed to be campy!"  Bitch, please!  Your show reeks and you know it!

    Anyways.  Y'all were saying?

That's how I feel! It's hard to find a single redeeming thing to say about Passions! The writing was bad, the acting was bad and the worst part is that they were serious. It to me was the catalyst for the failure of modern soaps. There were still 10 when it premiered, Passions included and it took them down quickly. It was such a joke. It actually angers me that it was on so long and Sunset Beach got screwed.

Out of curiosity, which moments would you have chosen? :D

Knots Landing: "Your babies are alive!"

Days: Sami knows about EJ and Abby

Bold and Beautiful: Sheila is back (2017)

Dynasty: Monica and Jeff aren't brother and sister

    Passions: Repeatedly getting renewed

Another World: Cecile lied about Cass being Maggie's father

    Melrose Place: Kimberly is back

    Sunset Beach: Derek

Days: Marlena is the Salem Stalker

AMC: Robin sees Anna (should have been on GH but I still love it)

Carrie slapping Sami in 1996 after finding out she had raped Austin

Anytime Marlena slapped Sami, especially after being called a slut or equivalent. The slap at the Kiriakis mansion following Carrie and Austin’s wedding was superb

I love Deidre’s cute little wind-up when she slaps someone!

    Not to mention her gasp.

Even in fictional Los Angeles, I'd never move anywhere without parking and those courtyard building means circling the block over and over.  That's why they all dated each other.  Because, they didn't want to give up their parking space. 😉

I meant what I said! Hell, they could use the color anyway! Maybe then at least Matt could get a good man!

B&B and GH have such a modern design that could survive for the next decade.. They look fresh and fast paced which the new audience kinda loves… All they really need to do is working on their writing and their storylines.

Of course B&B is fast paced, they write the show with copy& paste!

When it comes to NBC soaps attracting the middle school/high school demographic, it started with supercouple era Days, continued with Reilly Days, and then Passions. The thought process probably was get viewers while they're young and they'll stay on.

Think about it, the middle schoolers and high schoolers that came on board at the beginning of supercouple era Days are now in their 50s. I'm sure a good number of them are still watching.

That being said, most people start watching soaps for the adult stories, not the teen scene. When I started watching soaps I was drawn to Another World, Generations and DAYS. I was very young, but kinda followed. By the time I was 13/14 I was writing my own and keeping up with all soaps.

It's my personal opinion that PASSIONS actually was what lead to the end of modern soaps. It's really all the things hate about soaps and what gets made fun of. It was a parody.
