  1. After almost 50 years, The Other Side of the Wind is here on Netflix. I never thought I'd see the day.

Is that Orson Welles final film?

  2. As a horror fan, a Haunting fan and a soap opera fan, The Haunting of Hill House is a mammoth achievement in several genres. Watch it.

It's an incredible series. Definitely one of my all-time favorite Netflix shows. I watched it a few weeks ago, right after my dad passed away. Some of the scenes and images from the show haunted me for days afterward.

I thought the family drama was quite well done.

  3. Nicki Minaj became Lil Kim real fast.

I'm trying to remember if Lil Kim and Foxy Brown were this messy back in the day and I have to say...they weren't.  Maybe it was the absence of social media back then.

Lil Kim had feuds with Faith and Foxy.  Nicki has feuds with Cardi B., is getting sued by Tracy Chapman and just called called a liar by Steve Madden, not to mention that cyclical feud with Remy Ma.

LMAO!  I now understand what you mean.  Pathetic!  Just pathetic and she still doesn't get that her ass looks absolutely ridiculous!

Foxy Brown didn't have her own self-produced radio show she went on every day to clown herself.

  4. As a mild distraction for me from today's horrible news: The Megyn Kelly dish in both the Daily Beast article in her meltdown thread and this Daily Mail(!) article is delicious. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6320437/Black-employees-NBC-hurt-Megyn-Kelly-playing-MeToo-card-collect-69M-payout.html

Geez I read about this a few months ago I didn't know it was still going on. More interesting than anything on that show.

If this end with Stevie Nicks coming forward with allegations against Lindsey Buckingham....

    2. Vee

I did not care for the performance of The Chain, I'll say that. And I think both Lindsey and Stevie probably make the drama.

    3. Khan

      Khan

Seriously.  Lindsey and Stevie DEFINE the term "toxic relationship."

  7. He's a kinky old man but I hope Chris Claremont gets his due as the run-up to Captain Marvel kicks off. His work on the character was essential to building her into a long-lasting hero at Marvel Comics.

    1. DRW50

      DRW50

I'd never heard that stuff about Claremont. What was it? I know there are rumors Marvel pays him not to write. His Carol Danvers material truly did make her everything she was - he kept her going when Marvel gave up. He's also the main reason the X-Men are anything they are (I have read pretty much nothing of them since his departure). And Avengers Annual 10 is one of the best comics of all time. It was one of the first Marvel comics that got me hooked. I still feel pumped when I think of how he wrote for Scarlet Witch in that issue, essentially making it impossible for other writers to go back to the "Wanda is so weak she can only do two hexes and then she passes out" well.

    2. Vee

      Vee

Ohhhh I'm not going there, lol. Google him. He is writing a story for the upcoming big X-Men event. He never needs a major book again IMO (and I grew up reading his work, I loved it) but I do wish they'd give him another regular side title to putter away on, like they used to do about ten years ago. They were terrible but he was having fun.

Thanks for sharing. She's a wonderful woman, and I never did realize how little she's headlined things. Mama's Family was such a big part of my childhood that I've always considered a legend. I'll have to check the new series out.

    2. DramatistDreamer

      DramatistDreamer

Well, as a kid, my mother and I loved Mama's Family and we lived on a Coast, so I don't think it's as much about "Coastal elites" not appreciating the show as it was a bunch of entitled executives who probably thought Mama wasn't "f*ckable" and failed to promote the show properly.

The fact that the mention of the Golden Girls didn't elicit much response was telling.  TGG was a coastal show that was beloved by people all over (still is), tells me that the whole "coastal elites" distinction needs to die.  There are horribly oblivious, entitled gatekeepers everywhere, in the Bible Belt, in Cincinnati, in the Atlantic, in Washington State...everywhere.

Having said all that, Vicki Lawrence is so utterly talented and it's nothing short of sad that we missed out on many years of seeing that talent in action.  I'm glad we're all having another opportunity to glimpse that talent in action.  I know Cool Kids, initially got tepid reviews but I'm glad the ratings are strong.  Shows do improve over time, when given the chance.  Or it may just end up being one of those shows that people love, despite what critics say.

I'm reading that Apple already has a workaround for their phones.  As we discuss this, I've no doubt that an app is being developed to easily opt out of this "service" on other phones.

It's very exciting. I hope they find the missing Doctor Who episodes there.

  10. SNL is mostly a debacle for the last... 20 years? But when its political skits hit (and don't pull a punch) they can still have an impact. Matt Damon's Brett Kavanaugh is hilarious and will leave a Palin-sized mark.

    1. DRW50

      DRW50

It was an interesting choice to have Damon in that role given his own controversies (although none of those involved sexual assault).

I do hope the sketch gets a few people thinking, anyway.

    2. Vee

      Vee

Matt Damon can certainly be tone-deaf but I think he's a good guy and a great actor (and comedic actor). And yeah, white chicks love him.

    3. Khan

Another reason why, no matter how hard I try, I will never understand white people.

  11. Murphy Brown's faux Trump tweet was hysterical yet sadly plausible.

    1. Khan

      Khan

      Which tweet would that be?

    2. Vee

      Vee

"Old Murphy" doesn't know what she's talking about. Turbines bad. Kills all your birds. I'm against wind.

    3. Khan

      Khan

Oh, yes, that would be something he would tweet, lol.

  12. Wow - Kim Tate!

I wouldn't be surprised if that still happens down the line.

      I Am A Swede

You're probably right. There must be an underlying reason for them to bring Kim back like this for such a short visit. They're paving the way for James to return and fight Joe for Debbie.....

God, just thinking about it makes me feel sick!

    3. DRW50

      DRW50

I think it's probably more about a stunt than Debbie's love life, but I guess we'll see.

  13. Watching this tonight for a few people and a few reasons.

  14. Today's tombstoning of Maggie Haberman by David Simon on political twitter is my cue to remind everyone that The Wire is the single best piece of long-form television I have ever seen alongside Twin Peaks, and should be consumed by every man, woman and child.

    1. DRW50

      DRW50

Thanks. That was a pretty good article. I see he's still making stupid racist comments. The rest was interesting - more than I'd expected. He's also right about SNL (the part where they talk about how Lorne Michaels is hip to current times made me LOL).

    2. Khan

      Khan

Do people even still joke about his late-night series?  And plenty of actors from his generation have been able to work and not have to live in Hollywood to do it.  Chevy just can't admit he's effed up his own career.

    3. Vee

      Vee

      He's his own worst enemy.

  15. Betty White is a treasure and she's looking frail in these clips from the Emmys. Oof.

    1. I Am A Swede

      I Am A Swede

Well, she is 96 after all....   :)

  16. Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson look great in the stills for The Conners - weathered and older but tough. I'll watch the show for however long it lasts (if I can find the rest of the eps of Roseanne Season 10 to belatedly watch first) but I wish their return to situation comedy wasn't so wracked with turmoil and havoc.

    1. DRW50

      DRW50

I didn't really notice until recently how much Sara does look like Roseanne. No one can take the character's place but it makes sense, if this show does continue, that she comes closest.

  17. Just in case you needed even more TV drama today (no, I haven't watched this show): https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/american-gods-sidelines-new-showrunner-delays-frustrations-1140946

This is too bad. I love Ian McShane.

    2. YRBB

      YRBB

The first season was phenomenal, and widely acclaimed. It saddens me to see it falter so, and for my interest to dwindle as it looks more and more doubtful (especially with no Anderson and Chenoweth).

    3. Khan

      Khan

No, I don't watch this show either, but it sounds as if keeping it going is more trouble than it's worth.

What IS it with shows that are connected to Bryan Fuller?  It's like they're cursed even after he's gone (I'm thinking of this show and "Dead Like Me").

  18. Gonna be real interesting to see how Murphy Brown - which only tapes a few weeks ahead and reportedly intends to incorporate current news events and #MeToo - deals with the fall of Moonves.

I also wonder whether Aretha Franklin's death will somehow figure into the show's narrative.  I know her music was a big touchtone for the character of Murphy Brown.

Yes, it is going to be very interesting. I'm looking forward to it.
