Yeah, this isn't who I had in mind but it's definitely weird.

This is news to me, but maybe I'm out of date.

I don't know that scene very well but if it's the persistent issue I think, I'm fairly certain it's not a stranger.

It's sold well and Marvel loves Hickman, so judging by his own commentary it's probably going to run at least another 2-3 years. They may keep elements of the status quo afterwards, like they did with his FF run.

  6. Steven Soderbergh tosses out so many films of varying quality that it's easy to both overrate and underrate him, and Meryl Streep phones in her usual popular set so often these days that it can be easy to miss when she's really engaged. But HBO Max's Let Them All Talk is a deceptively meandering sleeper from late last year that deserves more recognition and it is, in many ways, both pure soap and almost Bergman-esque. Candice Bergen should have been nominated.

That's weird. Try reloading it? And yes, Wiest is having a bit of a renaissance again lately. I always liked her. The film was also largely improvised (from an outline).

I have not mentioned the X-Men's upcoming month-long Hellfire Gala event on SON before, in which all the X-Men comics for the month of June will be set on the same night at the same gala event, but rest assured I was thinking of y'all! It's as pure a soap opera sweeps month as comic books have ever come. https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/how-to-read-x-men-hellfire-gala-issues-announcement

I was going to mention him @BetterForgotten. I grew up on Claremont's original X-Men run (and the current era is the most excited I've been since, but that's another topic). While Lee and Ditko, etc. created the soap elements with Spider-Man, Mary Jane et al or the Fantastic Four or Avengers' personal dramas in the '60s, Claremont redefined comic book soap opera with looooongggg-term serialization and subplots.

Re: the crumbs, it's also worth nodding to the fact that they've since made Iron Man, Thor and Captain America (post-Iraq War!) all household names globally on par with Spider-Man, Superman or Batman (if not bigger than Superman at least) now, so they're far from crumbs today. Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, Shang-Chi, Eternals, etc. were all formerly very niche Marvel comic properties which are now all commercially viable for the mass market. That was unthinkable a decade ago.

Comics have always been soap opera. The MCU is absolutely a live action extension of that.

"Captain Marvel 2" now appears to be called "The Marvels", which suggests Carol and Monica Rambeau are co-starring.

What's bizarre is how a few outlets tried to spin it as a super empowering speech. Uhh, I guess you can call elements of it that, but...

You can do the soaps for 30 minutes at 2-4 episodes a week tops like the UK. You can airdrop them in a package on streaming, 30-40 episodes done in seasonal blocks, arc-based then let them take months off, like PC did with its production schedule but with an actual break in broadcast/release. It's perfectly doable and it's something Linda Gottlieb experimented with (and never fully abandoned, IMO) 30 years ago at OLTL. Also something Degrassi kind of did more recently.

They could remake DS for TV at literally any moment yet have consistently failed to do since 1991. We'll see if the current attempt goes to series. I would've expected at least 2 on-air/stream attempts in the last 20 years but here we are.

I don't think most soap premises are any different fundamentals-wise than any other popular family drama on TV or streaming. The core concepts are ultimately often the same for a reason.

It's gonna happen eventually, and when it does I'll still be here pointing to AMC and OLTL 2.0 and saying old news.

I'll have to give it a look. It's not like I haven't watched worse on YouTube; I spent a few days in the pandemic bingeing episodes of the final strange season of Chicago Hope, a show I never watched but always followed the BTS drama of.

The second season was a huge improvement. I hear Season 3 is great but haven't watched it yet. Watch Lower Decks (and Picard)!! So good.

There was a solid oral history of MadTV a few years ago - I linked it not that long back. Would it really be McDonald though? I thought she referenced a white actor who came in much later near the end of her run, and I seem to recall him being there early on.

She carried that show AFAIC. She's a very prominent and in demand voice actor in gaming now, but I wish she'd do more live action work and have an onscreen resurgence not unlike Erika Alexander has had.
