Are you talking just television soaps? Because radio soaps had plenty that didn’t have wealthy families at the onset.

Also, didn’t the Ryans of Ryan’s Hope feature a family that was ostensibly blue-collar at the onset?

I was thinking of TV as I don’t know much about radio soaps. I was thinking of RH but Wikipedia says it included the wealthy Coleridge family.

I think that w/o making major changes immediately and adopting a more measured approach, it can take a good 6 months for new writers to get a show back into shape.

Same holds true for a new show-it can take that long for things to fall into place- there might need to be recasts or actors having to adjust to playing a role as the writers see it, or conversely, writers reshaping a character to suit the actor etc

I do worry about the show being centered around wealthy characters-that can be limiting in terms of budget -I don't want to see rich characters living in tiny houses with no staff, and being wealthy takes away some story options as well.

Has there ever been a soap that didn't have a wealthy family at the onset?

The episodes from 1990 also aired in germany.  As i digitized them later, ich forgot to upload them. Maybe i could do it in the next days. I have only 3 or 4 episodes missing for 1990

This would be great! :D There's lots missing in English for that year and many episodes and clips without dates. The German really helps filling in all the gaps.

I don't suppose there's some way to get the transcript on youtube to convert to English? I know what's going on for the most part, having dug out a hodgepodge of clips in English, and just knowing the history, but I've never wished I was conversational in any language as much as I was now. lol

Oddly, the Nola/Quint wedding is entirely in English. As is singing.

On YouTube, click the gear icon next to the CC button, select subtitles, select German (auto-generated), select Auto-Translate, and then English. Of course, it's not a perfect transcript.

@rsclassicfanforever was 1990 not aired in Germany, or you just didn't have it?

    Thanks @FrenchFan for the recaps!

  5. I can't see a reboot happening for ATWT and GL. I'd be interested in seeing the vets, but most will be retired, deceased, or onto other shows by now. A new show would have to focus on the younger generation. As someone who tuned out of those shows long before they were cancelled, I have no idea who all the kids are and don't care about them, so it wouldn't be viable for me (and I'm on the much younger side of the average age of a soap viewer...).

A show like Edge of Night you could reboot because it's basically just a cool title and a general concept and you could do anything you want from there. You won't have fans complaining that you're not honoring the history of the Hughes and Bauer families or be bound by 60 years of history and family connections.

What I do think could have worked, and am surprised no one ever thought of this, would be licensing characters from shows like ATWT, GL, AMC, and OLTL for Hallmark-style movies for TV or streaming (ABC soaps might be trickier to license). There would be some nostalgia for that, I think, and you'd have a better chance of getting cameos from the old guard or those who are on other shows (Maura West). You could build up a new generation of characters by doing 1-3 movies a year and they could work as standalones for viewers who just like those kind of movies anyway. It wouldn't be too expensive to produce and the schedule would be flexible. Michael Damian would be the perfect person to do this! :)

I wanted to say a huge thanks to @rsclassicfanforever who uploaded Guiding light in German from 1982 to 1992 on his youtube channel.

I just found that channel and didn't know about it... and I've started the 1982 episodes... COMPLETELY IN LOVE with the show.

    Thank you!

    THANK YOU

Wow! I had seen these years ago, then they disappeared... I was looking for them recently, and here they are! Thank you so much @rsclassicfanforever this is amazing!

Although I am not pretending to be an expert, I would not negate the chance for classic B&B because of the YouTube episodes.  Much of James Corden's show was used to promote his YouTube content, because it is an alternate monetary source.  In fact, by the final season, according to Variety, CBS was making more money off the online clips than they were making off of first run audience showing.  So, it might make sense to show reruns in order to promote the online content.

It just occurred to me that B&B has never once done a TV spot promoting the classics on their YouTube channel. There must be lots of  viewers who don't know about it. They used to advertise that Soap City website all the time. Maybe it's different because YouTube is an app, not a site that CBS owns, but at least a scroll or something. I agree with you, though, that airing classics on TV could whet appetites and get people viewing online.

  8. I actually think yesterday was the worst Carly propping I've ever seen in my life.

First,  they slip in a throwaway line about Jason leaving half his estate to Carly and splitting the rest between his sons?!

Then, Olivia comes over just to gratuitously vent about how much better Carly is as a partner than Nina, down to her choice in color scheme. Cool, collected, Carly knows how to make customers happy and keep her employees productive, while mean hag Nina has the temerity to fire an employee with performance issues. (Let's not forget that if she wanted to, Carly could totally run Crimson better than Nina and even outsmarted Tracy in an ad negotiation).

Finally, badass Carly isn't afraid to confront the thugs beating up an FBI agent, running towards the danger, and playing the Good Samaritan.

Maybe one of those, but all of them, in one episode...

  9. I think Jason knows who "Jagger" is but just never made the connection that "Agent John Cates" could be "Jagger" and would have no reason to look into it. And to be fair, even if Jason has seen a picture of Jagger, he looks totally different now, lol.

    100% to all of this!

The way Claire told Summer “she was better” wasn’t that person anymore reminded me of the days when Kevin was shoved down all throats and we were constantly reminded that he was a “good redeemed” person, not accountable for his past behavior

    🤢🤮

Ah, but you see, as was explained to us several times, Kevin can't help committing crimes, but he doesn't like being in jail, because his father put him in a closet!

Im kind of on Summers side here….shes making the most sense on her feelings RE: Claire. You know something is wrong when even Victor has moved on from all the harm she’s caused.

Absolutely! Nikki was kind of side eying Claire very briefly when they wanted her to move in, but she got over it in a flash. She should be terrified being in the same house as her.

I don't even think Summer is saying Claire can't be part of the family, she literally just doesn't want her to be Harrison's nanny which is completely rational.

  12. I... think Billy knows, but I always tune out during his scenes.

There was a line where Claire and Victoria discussed "three" younger siblings, without mentioning Reed's name.

I thought it was funny when Cole was asking if the "upstairs shower" at the tackhouse is still finicky. There was no upstairs then. The bed was right there in the barn. It was built out when Nick moved in, way after Cole was gone.

Not surprised they have destroyed any potential drama with Claire. Some people were speculating that the ridiculous undead baby storyline would at least result in Victoria having to deal with a bad seed child, dealing with the same issues Victor was having with Adam, how Claire would have to work to gain the family's trust... but they blew past all that. Claire is just a good person now, period, because they say so. She has made every correct decision and is a fairytale princess who makes children happy and has birds singing out her window. So of course her siblings already know all about it and are completely ok with it. Connor has to go to a special facility because he has OCD, a condition that many people have, but psycho Claire lives on the ranch and mentioning offscreen therapy is enough, and people talk about how this woman who recently kidnapped, poisoned, and imprisoned them would be great working with children! And Summer is the mean one because she doesn't think it's a good idea, lol.

They just completely destroyed any edge that Claire could have which would be the only thing that would make her interesting and the only silver lining in this storyline. It's a shame, because she really did a great job with that light switch moment when she realized Jordan lied about everything, and we should be seeing more of that, Claire struggling with switching back and forth between good and evil and trying to fight her demons.

90% of baby stories that play out on soaps today are done a) in lieu of riskier content and b) in order to simply pad out months of the year. They are time-fillers and safety valves. That's all this is to me. Molly and T.J. as characters have been dead ends for over a decade, and while I've enjoyed some of Molly's recent scenes with her family re: the past, Alexis' alcoholism, the law, etc. ultimately the recast feels like a temp relative they threw into wardrobe as a quick fix and I see no great spark there. I would just add them to nearly 10 characters if not more that need to be dumped instead of sinking the cost more and more on people who have been here way too long - let Molly come back someday, but not now.

Maybe Molly begins to get anxious about Kristina bonding with the child, not to mention the mob heating up again, and decides to take a job in Washington DC. She and TJ leave for a couple of years and come back recast with their kid, who struggles with Molly's type-A perfectionist tendencies and bonds with "cool aunt" Kristina.

  14. Kristina being written as a Sonny apologist doesn't work for me. She was nearly killed by a car bomb and had a show called Mob Princess and she's going to pretend she has no idea what he does? She's taken a major step back from the girl who processed her abusive boyfriend by realizing Sonny was abusive and abusive doesn't always mean hitting.

I'm not saying she can't love her father or the relationship can't evolve, especially since he supported her coming out. But I would expect her, out of all his children, to see the shades of grey. Its crazy that Michael at this point acknowledges who Sonny is more than she does.

My prediction regarding Natalia's stance on keeping Kristina and Blaze's relationship out of the spotlight will be Kristina's surrogacy to suppress her true reason for keeping Blaze's private life private; she doesn't accept Blaze's romantic interest in a woman.

There was a throwaway line when Natalia mentioned keeping the personal stuff private (actually a good boundary, even if her motivations aren't pure) that IMO is going to come back. She said "it doesn't have to be in writing or anything..." so I think eventually Blaze is going to decide to come out in the publicity materials and Natalia will object but the answer will be "sorry, it's not in the contract."
