  1. OK, they got me.  I wasn't expecting the letter to be signed by Angelica.

    Spoiler

BUT, do we know Xander's mother's name?

I would agree with @AbcNbc247 about Bo and Phillip being cut out of the will.  My only justification would be that Bo never wanted his money (and he's paying for his care), and Kate said Phillip had a trust fund.  I would've argued that Justin should be pissed, but I assume we don't know what Justin's father left him when he died.

Also, why is Sarah still in the hospital two days after giving birth?  Does she have gold-plated medical insurance?

  2. I think it is an interesting discussion about what gets called a Primetime Soap.  Especially after the failure of The Colby's and all the press about the death of soaps in primetime.

For me, the best example is Thirtysomething.  It was a continuing drama.  It used cliffhangers.  And, it focused on the romantic lives of couples against a backdrop of advertising.  But, Thirtysomething premiered in September 1987, six months after the cancellation of The Colby's, so ABC would never market it as a soap.  Even though, arguably, it was much more soapy than Hotel.

  3. I thought this bit of news brought some additional insight to the topic of 1980s ratings

    Screenshot 2023-09-23 at 16-47-04 BC-1987-01-12.pdf.png

Starting in 1987 Nielson dropped the ratings diaries, which required households to manually log their TV habits, and began digitally counting what people watched.  The article notes that there were many changes in the data that fall because there was less bias in the passive data collection.

I couldn't find any immediate follow up to see if ABC actually dropped the Nielson system, but given that data is available for 1987 and beyond, it seems like they reversed their decision.

CBS & NBC were similarly sassy

  4. Is anyone is from the San Francisco Bay Area?  Because I was wondering about the following from KRON-TV wiki entry:

For most of its tenure with NBC, KRON was the network's second-largest affiliate (behind only KYW-TV in Philadelphia) and its largest on the West Coast. Despite this, KRON occasionally preempted NBC programming. One notable omission was Another World, which would eventually air on the station in the early 1990s; KRON's decision to drop the daytime soap opera in the summer of 1998 (leaving Days of Our Lives and the struggling Sunset Beach as the only network soaps on its schedule) is thought to have hastened NBC's decision to cancel it altogether a year later.

Does this mean that if you lived in San Francisco, Another World was only on TV from 1990-1998?

  5. I think the other unknown is the creative relationship between the headwriter and the former producer.  I mean, if the writer created an idea that couldn't be executed given the availability of the cast, that seems like it is beyond his control.  This casting stunt seems to be the dominion of the production, not the writing staff.  So, it will be interesting to see if we feel as provoked by the next producer by the casting choices.

  6. I don't think it is confirmed, but I bet they'll use it as a cheeky cliffhanger to introduce Tate.

I dunno, the stunt feels in keeping with the general non-serious tone of the show.  Mostly I enjoy it so that I can come here and read what you guys think of the silliness.

I mean, I don't think most other soaps would do a story where an octogenarian ex-con openly discuses her plans to turn her dead husband's international business into an illegal drug dealing operation.

Carson Scott Field is mentioned as Whitney (Taylor's) first husband and is from a family with a pretty successful department store.

That's amusing because Carson Pirie Scott & Marshall Fields were both big department stores in the Midwest.

Dakota's name was originally Dresden Lane.

And Dresden Lane is a fancy street in Middleberg Va similar to the fictional setting of the show.

  8. If we're to believe JL's instagram post, and there's no reason not to, there was some miscommunication about her availability.  And it seems like they need Theresa to introduce Tate and set up his motivations.  As well as, my prediction that Theresa messed with Victor's will in Greece.  So, storywise, the character needs to hang around even if JL is off making more Xmas movies with titles like The Mistletoe Miracle.

Given DAYS questionable Hair & Makeup Department, I can predict that EOB's wig as Theresa is going to be a major controversy.  😉 💇‍♀️

Marrisa was briefly married to Carter, but I don't think he divorced Christina so it wasn't valid. I just think Marissa is dropped without a resolution, but I'll be curious to see if she pops up in a cast list that I missed. Goldstone most likely replaced Marissa with Lisa Thompson, which gave Christina more to do.

I mentioned this during my reading of the SOD summary because it is so soapy.

Carter goes to Mexico with Marissa.  He gets a quickie divorce from Christina and marries Marissa.

Only to return and find out that he's the Chapin heir.

Christina finds out about the wedding because Marissa orders a fur coat with her new initials monogrammed inside.  This was also bad luck because Carter changed his last name to Chapin, so she would've had to change it any way.

So, Christina blackmails Carter over the fact that he was present when Eddie murdered the shady construction guy earlier in the series who was also involved in drugs and stolen horses.  And she makes him rip the divorce document in half, which somehow invalidates their divorce, and keeps Marissa from getting any of the Chapin money.

Marissa then uses her knowledge of chemistry to unsuccessfully gas Carter to death in the mansion before leaving town.

Of course, none of it makes sense, because Patrick specifically excluded Carter from his will, and you can't make a divorce go away just by ripping up the paper, but I guess they had no time for details in a half hour drama.

  10. I know this will get all the usual RSW critiques, but my only concern is that I don't know if they've established enough of a Justin and Alex relationship to pull off that final scene, but we'll see...

Wally Kurth is single-handedly carrying daytime dramas on two different networks in 2023, so he may be able to carry it off.

  11. Have we seen this article on Patti Davis being fired from Rituals?  I wonder in hindsight if that set was bit more of a nightmare than reported at the time?  But, given that she was only there for 2 episodes, it makes sense that Marissa disappeared quickly.  I think they spoke more about her than to her in scenes.

President's daughter not fired from soap, her manager says

HOLLYWOOD -- The producers of a TV soap opera say President Reagan's daughter Patti Davis was dropped because she failed to show up for taping of the show, but the actress' manager says she did not intend to appear on the show beyond the two episodes she taped.

'Rituals,' a new syndicated daytime drama, announced last week that Davis would no longer appear on the show after she called in last Tuesday and asked to postpone her scheduled appearance that day until 3 p.m.

She later phoned to say that 'scheduling problems' would prevent her from taping any time that day.

Davis told the show's producers that her meeting with a book publisher conflicted with her taping of the show.

'We have a $15 million annual budget and a huge cast. We felt it would have been easier for her to reschedule her meeting with the publisher than it would be for us to reschedule all the other performers' appearances and shoot around her,' said Jim Moloshok, a spokesman for Telepictures, which produces the show.

'She was contracted for two days work, which she performed,' said Mike Gursey, Davis' manager. 'The producers then asked her to sign a long term contract, which she declined to do because she never intended to be a regular on the show. We're very suprised to read reports that she had been fired.'

  12. @dc11786 - I admire your collection of memorabilia.  It's like a little mystery box of treasures.  I can't wait to hear what you explore.

I wonder if the writers changed the last name from Butler, because Carter was raised by the Chapin's butler and that would have been too confusing 😉

Also, the Jeff's parentage is intriguing because in the SOD recaps sometimes they reference him as Christina's adopted son, and sometimes as her stepson, so it would make sense if he came from Carter's first marriage.

  13. Rex is this week's dumbest guy in Salem!

He told Phillip, the ex-boyfriend of his fiancée's baby's daddy, that he is the not Victoria's father in the middle of the town square?

I like the Vivian and Phillip dynamic.  I mean, it is odd that she's ignored him for years, and now wants to emphasize that she gestated him.  But, their scene was fun and filled with good energy.

Also, why's Brady offering to reimburse Theresa for the trip to Greece?  Doesn't he already pay all of her bills?  And we're going to need some clarification on Theresa as a single mother.  Because hasn't Brady been visiting regularly in California?  Or, are we supposed to think that he didn't see Tate during his rapid aging period?

Also, where's @carolineg?  Has she gone off to a European Boarding School for SORASing?

I thought Mignon and Martin were brother and sister.  Is that incorrect?  And was the General Mignon's father or Rusty Sr's father?  Did any of the Sentells or Tourners ever meet the Kendalls?  Other than Jo and Liza, I mean.

OK, I went back and solved my confusion.

Estelle was Lloyd's ex-wife and her son Steven was fathered by Martin Tourneur.

I think it is Steve Kendall and Steve Kaslow that threw me for a loop.

  15. The “Dancing With the Stars” premiere will more than likely be delayed next week, as talent has begun dropping out of the show amid rising pressures during the WGA strike.

“Veep” actor Matt Walsh, who is part of the Season 32 cast, is “taking a pause” from the ABC dance competition show until an agreement is made with the WGA. Walsh is a member of WGA, SAG-AFTRA and the DGA.

ABC confirmed to Variety that the network is putting plans in place to postpone the “Dancing With the Stars” premiere.

It's an odd story because SAG made a specific statement in support of actors appearing on DWTS, but I assume people don't want to cross the picket line and Walsh is supporting WGA, not SAG by pausing his commitment.

  16. Poor Steve, the only long-lost relatives he ever found was Jack.  Meanwhile, John's dad is Bert the Chimenysweep and he's still rich AF.

Also, I think we also need to credit Ron C for finding the humor in John.  Between his interactions with Rachel and Vivian, the character has grown a ton of charisma since the days when it was difficult to differentiate Robo-John from Real-John.

I'm not an Alex apologist, nor do I think that there's any conspiracy on behalf of the writer toward the character, but Kayla's talk with Stephanie was oddly pro-Alex.  Like, suddenly Stephanie's supposed to have second thoughts about Chad because he is not light-hearted?

Also, I can't help but think that Theresa seeing the letter first means that there will be a twist about the spoiler regarding Alex, in Xander's favor.  Hopefully, the fact that they have the same name will finally be acknowledged.

The physical stuff between Julie and Vivian bothers me.  Not only is it silly, but also they seem so frail to pushing and pulling each other.  Gone are the days of Dynasty when a catfight would cut to an obvious stuntman in a cheap wig.  These ladies are too old to do their own stunts.
