  1. Ugh, I hate that I'll be an emotional wreck saying goodbye to a co-worker/subordinate over the next week. I know people come and go often at work, and I'm happy for him and his new opportunity, but I hired this kid right out of college and mentored him for two years. I never really had that experience with anyone else (he was the first). I really invested a lot in him, and I hope he leaves knowing how much he's made me a better manager.

Very nice sentiment. All managers/supervisors/bosses should exude this attitude.

Beautiful words, BF. Similar to how I feel every year around graduation time.

  2. "Young Sheldon".....Really, CBS?

Is this the first you've heard of it? I've known about it for some time now. They are running TBBT down the ground with so many airings of it and now the YS spinoff.

Networks think every long-running series is a cash cow waiting to be milked (or milked dry).  Remember "AfterMASH"?

I think YS will prove to be a total misfire.

I shared the Oprah video on Twitter. I'm afraid my other post is too long, lol, and I don't have Instagram, believe it or not. I put it on my personal Facebook, though. :)

  4. I wonder how differently GH would have turned out in 1996 if ABC hired Nancy Curlee to replace the Labine's (like they wanted) instead of Guza.

  5. I miss the look and feel of a classic P&G soap...

There was a real sense of community if something happened to someone it effect the whole canvas. Plus they would go all out for the holidays.

Nothing gets better than this as classic P&G soap

I'm enjoying rewatching 1990 Guiding Light episodes more than current Y&R LOL.

  6. The Color Purple revival on Broadway is amazing. So much better than the amateur production that was done a decade ago.

  7. What!? The BBC is rebooting Are You Being Served? with a new cast? Ugh.

The concept of a workplace comedy can work, but it would be so far removed from what AYBS was that I'm not sure why they need to reboot it. It's not exactly new to just use an old show's name to get attention/viewers, but I think the BBC surrendering to this laziness is somewhat sad.

    3. YRBB

      YRBB

It most likely will not exceed expectations, which would be a shame. Only recently I was thinking how easy it would be to redo the concept, only perhaps I wouldn't recast the classic parts and instead create new ones, or at least ones with broad similarities but their own intricacies as well.

In terms of laziness, well, that's true... I think they've pretty much given up on finding many new concepts anymore.

There was talk of a special that would have things like a young Hyacinth (from Keeping Up Appearances). That would interest me, somewhat, although I'm not sure how thrilled Patricia Routledge would be.

  8. More and more, I appreciate Roseanne Barr's contributions to sitcoms during her time (late 80s/early 90s). Especially as popular crap from the same era gets rebooted (Full House), its nice to know there was a popular family sitcom from that era that was the total antithesis (and more impactful).

@All My Shadows - I wasn't trying to make an apples to apples comparison, but more so that I'm glad that something like Full House had something on same Tuesday night lineup to counteract its corniness. There isn't much variety in traditional sitcoms anymore, and I probably couldn't name the last real family sitcom that was a hit.

    3. All My Shadows

      All My Shadows

Ah, I get you, and I agree. I mean, I'll take Roseanne over FH any day of the week, too, but like you said, the fact that they both could exist in the same space is something that we don't get anymore. Definitely not on the same network.

    4. MissLlanviewPA

      MissLlanviewPA

I guess 8 Simple Rules might have been the last hit family sitcom. If John Ritter hadn't died it might have had more of a chance.

  9. I could watch Sean O'Pry's Paco Rabanne commercial all day...

  10. So Empire is the first show with a predominantly African American cast to rank in the top 10 since A Different World during the 1990-1991 season? Wow. Too bad ADW will likely never have a reboot due to its association with Bill Cosby, even though it could easily be rebooted and its premise would be extremely relevant in today's world.

The premise is one that can be done again without being a remake or reboot at all, IMO. The dynamics of an eclectic group of students at an HBCU? It stands on its own.

You could put A Different World back on TV (or preferably Netflix) tomorrow. Sadly the Cosby association is too strong.

Yes, it appears that Cosby was very involved with the show even after he had Lisa Bonet leaves due to her pregnancy.

Apparently, NBC wanted to pull the AIDS episode, but Cosby fought them on it per Debbie Allen:

I definitely miss those shows, ATWT was my favorite, I just changed my avatar in honor of Kim and Bob Hughes.

LOL, Soapsuds, I've been bingeing 1989 episodes and hopefully this evening I'll get to Sierra's return!  Are you watching too!  I'd love to chat about it in the ATWT thread.

I may look up an early/mid 80s episode of GL.  I'm leaning toward the one with Beth, Lillian and Beth's stepfather Bradley (was that his name?) Any suggestions?

Me too. That and Mac and Ada and the Corys on AW. I miss P&G soaps so much.

DD you may enjoy some episodes on Bandstandmike's channel too, although I'm not sure they have any Thanksgiving.

  12. Who remembers when Oprah sung her theme song? LOL!

DD, I totally thought about Jim when I made that post!  Carl, he was on Oprah back then and playfully mocked the theme, squalling, "GET WITH THE PROGRAAAAM!" a few times which cracked up Oprah and the audience.

    3. SFK

      SFK

I loved the melancholy Paul Simon theme, especially the, "Well speak until your mind's at ease" part.  Get with the Program was '96/'97 because it was after Nutty Professor came out.  Oprah was obsessed with saying, "Fabulous!" like Mrs. Klump and at the end of the theme song, after Patti's acrobatic, "O-OH-ooh-ooh-O-ooh-pruh-uh-ah, yeah!", you heard Oprah say, "Fabulous!"

I'd never seen that Mad TV sketch. One of the best female casts of any sketch comedy show.

      That's funny about Jim Carrey.

No seriously, tell us how you REALLY feel. ;) Wonder if this divorce will be messier than her last, even without a custody battle to worry about.

...Just kidding, there is a possible custody battle to worry about. Oy vey.

    3. ChitHappens

      ChitHappens

There was a prenup so it shouldn't be messy.  As for custody, OM will be lucky to get supervised visits.  He has a long line of violent encounters, one recently at an airport.  He's being sued as I write this.  If mama can't choose better men, Nahla needs to be living elsewhere!

Halle is a mess. This is how careers get wrecked.

  14. It's kind of sad Diana Ross is now regarded as a bit of a joke and her contributions to pop culture (mostly with the Supremes) seems to be glossed over these days.

I think she's done great and is quite a legend. Her voice is still in good condition unlike some singers who have ruined theirs and still release subpar material.

    4. DRW50

      DRW50

Diana Ross was a very unique artist with a very stylized voice. She managed to be a big name for 15-20 years, which is quite a feat, especially for women in the music industry. I think her erratic and at times greedy behavior in the late '90s did her no favors, but she's still always going to be remembered as a legend.

  16. No matter how many times I re-watch clips of Roger and Holly (either together or apart), I can never get enough. I've loved many soap characters and actors, but these two hold a special place in my heart and always will. Also, a bit sad to say, I think in many ways, I identify strongly with Holly and share a similar personality, wit, and outlook on life (the Holly of the early 90's at least).

    1. Nothin'ButAttitude

      Nothin'ButAttitude

Me too. I love watching their entire arc with each other. Plus, I miss characters like Holly. I wish there were still ambitious, career-driven female characters on soaps like Holly.

    2. ~bl~

      ~bl~

Holly as a character amazing and inspiring. Most soap women today are insipid or they got where they did because they inherited it from a family member. While her off-camera ex was in television it wasn't said that Holly didn't have that career path before getting involved with him.

  20. I'm not enjoying Kathy Griffin at all on Fashion Police. I kind of wish E! had just canceled it after Joan's death. No one can replace Joan, that's a given, but I don't think Kathy was the right person to move the show forward and I don't know if that's even possible with someone else.
