  1. If anyone is look for a set to film a sequel to 'The Shining', Dr. Phil's house should just cover it.

  11. If Eddie Murphy proved anything last night it's that he shouldn't keep putting off a big standup return he promises - he had complete control of the audience live on SNL, especially as Gumby. It was a sight.

@Khan the first National Lampoon's Vacation was rated R and was a huge hit, so not all family comedies are PG-13, although I could see HBO or Netflix more willing to take that perceived risk nowadays than the risk-averse Hollywood movie studios.

Eddie must have returned the favor because I remember Murphy produced a comedy revue (that aired on HBO) in the 1980s called Uptown Comedy Express, the same year as Hollywood Shuffle but I wouldn't see Hollywood Shuffle for at least another year or two when it came to cable, so the first time that I actually remember seeing Robert Townsend or Chris Rock was on that HBO special.

A few years later Townsend got his own HBO special with Partners In Crime, which he co-produced with Keenan Ivory Wayans around the time that In Living Color was in its early seasons.

Funny you should mention Barris, last night there were some quips that the casting for the Home for the Holidays sketch was better than Kenya Barris' series.

Personally, I would like to see someone with a bit less frothy comedic senses write it.  Also, I think Barris might be occupied with this new family sitcom he has with Rashida Jones.

Doesn't Eddie Murphy have a deal with Netflix though? I think it's for standup too.  The response to last night's episode had to have boosted his belief that he can make the standup work.

Also, I thought he had stellar chemistry with Maya Rudolph.  I know many people don't like him doing family fare, in terms of movies but I wouldn't mind it if it were along the lines of what we saw between Murphy and Rudolph in the Home For the Holidays sketch.  If the writing is right, they could pull it off, imo.

Another person that I miss is Robert Townsend but for slightly different reasons. I grew up watching his Partners In Crime specials on HBO and would love to see something to that effect.  PIC was sort of a hybrid show, it wasn't fully sketch and it wasn't fully standup.

It is!  It influenced me so much in how expansive a characterization I believe a woman protagonist could be.  It's one of the reasons why I got so fed up with how the writing of women characters has devolved on soaps.

Part of me expects that Joyner is looking for the next medium to continue on, in some way.  He pretty much said that the business model of radio pushed him out so, maybe sometime down the road, we might hear from him on another platform--maybe a podcast interview here and there?

I don't have HBO but I've seen as few scenes and heard great things about the series.  Hopefully, in future, HBO will put out a DVD set the way they've done previous series and I can rent or borrow it somewhere and watch.

@DRW50 Also, I read that Nancy had recently lost her father, so yeah, I too think this was why.  Some people cast aspersions on her for not participating but it just goes to show, that you never know what someone else is going through.

Well, damn :(  These past few days have been brutal for celebrity passages.  I know that Nancy is not the most popular on these boards but my heart truly does go out to her at this time.

Performances aside, anyone who reads a script knows which role is clearly meant to be supporting and which is meant to be leading.

I mentioned it because I saw that she just won a Critic's Circle Award, or something and people were expressing surprise that it was for Supporting and not Lead.
