Too bad, that Preemptions Thread is locked and archived, it would have been the perfect place to mark this infamous anniversary and how it impacted soap programming:
40 YEARS AGO TODAY: On March 30, 1981, an attempted assassin shot President Ronald Reagan outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. The gunman said he was obsessed with Jodie Foster and thought this would impress her. Reagan survived after surgery and went on to complete two terms. pic.twitter.com/8zpkjVAPj8

That's an interesting question. Soap viewers tended to be pretty faithful viewers back then.
I wasn't around for the first event, and frankly, I was around 6 years old back then but I only remember being home from school and turning on the television and being annoyed that they kept replaying the footage. I don't remember whether I eventually found something else to watch or turned off the T.V. My memories are a bit cloudy.
I'd love to hear if there are others with clearer memories of what television viewing was like that day and how they felt when their favorite soap was pre-empted. Be candid, lol.
