I don't think this is RH's Lisa Sutton. This Lisa Sutton was also talking about her husband's recent health battles and in February post said she has been married to him for 35 years.

RH's Lisa Sutton was listed as a couple with (former) business partner, Amy Lafayette, in a obituary of Amy's father. A few years ago,  Amy filed for Marriage Dissolution/Divorce from Lisa.

In regards to RH, why are the earliest months of the show so inconsistent to find online? I don't think I've ever seen the second and third episodes, and there are plenty more within the first 60 or so that are missing. Surely they must have aired on SOAPnet?

Here are some Soapnet episodes that were put up over on YouTube over the last year under rogershope --- 2, 10,12, 14, 16,23, 24, 26, 28, 30, 43, 45, 46.

If you click on Ryan's Hope, Part 1 playlist--- rogershope combined what TheSquirrelyGirl had put up ---with those episodes they added that I had listed above.

I have been wondering about Mr. Levin for many months.  I am sorry that he was not available to be interviewed for Mr. Lisantti's book.

Michael Levin was, briefly,  in the book.

He said Jack and Mary was probably his favorite story.

He said soap operas are female-driven and written with them in mind. He said none of the Mary recasts were right. He said Helen Gallagher's suggestion of Kathleen Tolan was bad.  Karen Morris-Gowdy said Michael was very grumpy during this time because he was frustrated --- he let everyone know how unhappy he was. Times he says he didn't have anything to do. He pushed for Tichina Arnold to be hired ---it was fun ---but not much came from Jack and Zena story.  He didn't like the storyline with Jack's parents ---thought it was silly ----although it gave him certain dramatic scenes and he was flattered by the attention it gave him. He liked the return of Leigh.

Michael Levin said Yasmine was very sweet and pretty.

After the show ended, he said he missed the money the most.

i just viewed an episode of Ryan's Hope on YouTube.   In it, the third actor was playing Dr. Patrick Ryan.   Please help me:  I cannot remember the name of this actor.   Who was the third Dr. Patrick Ryan?   To me, he resembled or reminded me of Malcolm Groome, but the actor seemed very inexperienced.

His name is Robert Finoccoli and was on the show for about 3 months. He did have some of Malcolm Groome's  Pat's mannerisms.

  5. A new Youtube interview on Jim Masters TV with Ilene Kristen (Delia #1), Malcolm Groome (Pat #1), and Karen Morris-Gowdy(Faith #4) along with author Tom Lisante.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4o5WqYWxBE&ab_channel=JimMastersTV

There really wasn't anything new said about the show --- Malcolm Groome did say he was the one who talked to Claire Labine about the Leboyer birth method and it was after that she wrote it into Mary's pregnancy story.

Showed a commercial with Karen and then one with Ilene ---commercials Carl had shared with us here on the forum before.

    Talked about some fan encounters

Ilene and Malcolm spoke a little about their Grease experience.

Malcolm talked a bit about the shaman healing he does.

Karen is busy taking care of her parents ranch in Wyoming and has 3 grandchildren.

Author Tom is hoping to write a book that will be a combination about the soap opera Texas (another soap Tom watched) and in relation to what was happening on NBC around that time. Tom has already spoke to Richard Backus (Barry on RH and also on Lovers and Friends/For Richer For Poorer and Another World) about this book.

Upon giving it some thought, Delia would probably  have been the only character that I think Marland could truly have written well since she was a more neurotic version of Nola Reardon.

The only other character that I think he might have had a good grasp on was Faith.. that character was such a Marland character and with his obsession with writing about therapy.. Faith was the perfect character.

That would have kept both characters on the show instead of shipping them off to San Diego and the Mayo Clinic.

I'm thinking they would have hired someone other than Robin Mattson to play Delia. I know very little about Douglas Marland but perhaps hired one of the previous actresses he wrote for on one of his other shows  --- or would they kept Ilene and written in the weight issue as some medicine induced condition that Ilene experienced. Would Karen have put up with the misery she felt working for Joe Hardy and stayed or would they have recast Faith, too.

I've always had an issue that only the female characters seemed to go therapy.  Delia (and after only three months of therapy was then deemed well enough for Roger to propose to her ), Faith (and while Faith said she was seeing three different psychiatrists---  very little onscreen time was ever spent on Faith's therapy or even on her alcohol rehabilitation ---where she went straight to becoming an alcohol counselor), Amanda, and Johnny had made Siobhan a psychiatrist appointment when she was wanted to reunite with Joe. Can someone help refresh my memory ---did any male characters get therapy?

What I didn't understand was why didn't the show revist Jack/Jill during the time when Frank was off the canvas between fall 1981 to early 1983.  Jill barely did anything during the time Frank was off the show.

It was because of that slow late 1981 to early 1983 that Nancy Addison said she decided if another prolonged period without much to do happened again - --  she would leave the show. And she did after she had been on the backburner for 18 months (married to Frank and pregnant) when she left in January 1988.

  9. Some Ebony Magazine comments from  RH producer Robert Costello and Hannibal Penney and  from March 1978

    Blacks in the 'Soaps'

Robert Costello, producer of ABC's Ryan's Hope, says, "The reason there aren't more Blacks or interracial relationships is not due to prejudice. It's just that Blacks must be able to be integrated into story lines. Ryan's Hope revolves around an Irish Catholic family, and by the time we finish with the stories about all of the family members, everyone else's part is peripheral. And we can't bring in a Black brother-in-law to one of the Ryan's."

The lone Black actor on Ryan's Hope is Hannibal Penney Jr., who portrays Dr. Clem Moultrie, the chief resident neurosurgeon at New York's Riverside Hospital. Penney is also a contract player. "I have had a story line as director of a strike by overworked hospital doctors at Riverside, but I don't have a love interest" says Penney. "Daytime TV is all about romance, and when an actor gets a full story with a love interest, then he can discern his following and how much audience appeal he has." Penney has been with Ryan's Hope for three years.

My memory must be playing tricks on me - I thought Jack and Jill were the ones who were supposed to get together while Jack and Mary were on the outs.  They had a history prior to the start of the show, I recall.

I have wondered if Jill didn't exist in the early planning stages.

Here is what Totally Kate ---webmaster of TotallyKate! The Official Website pf Kate Mulgrew---wrote on the Soapnet board

    by TotallyKate

A few years ago I happened to acquire from eBay notes about the original casting and storyline for Ryan's Hope. I had forgotten what was in it until I came across it last week when I was looking for something else.

In the original bible for 'A Rage to Love', Mary has gone to the police academy to follow in the footsteps of her big brother, Frank. Frank is still a policeman and he and his partner, Saul, are involved in a case with mob connections. Saul dies and then Frank is found at the bottom of the hospital steps. Frank eventually dies and Bob Clancey (last name was changed to Reid) and Mary investigate his death as they don't believe it was an accident. Mary "quits" the police force and goes undercover taking a job at the hospital. Jack does not agree with Mary risking her life by going undercover and this breaks up the relationship that has already developed between them. Jack then starts a relationship with Faith, although both he and Mary love each other. Faith was involved with Pat but that relationship broke up after Faith wanted marriage and Pat didn't. Jack's relationship with Faith of course is wonderful for the widow Delia who wants Pat back. So everyone seems to be without the person they really love which makes for many hours of wanting them to get back to the one they love.

Of course many aspects of the storyline changed drastically by the time "Ryan's Hope" made it on the air. It's interesting to note though that a lot of these original storyline ideas either ended up as backstory for the characters or as future storylines, such as the police academy and Siobhan.

Not to make excuses, but reading about Penney did remind me of a rumor someone who claimed to have insider knowledge posted on the old SoapNet board: that in the show's original bible, Clem was intended to have an interracial relationship with Faith.  I don't know that that was ever totally debunked; as far as I know, it was never verified.

It's certainly possible. Of course in those original bible notes  for 'A Rage to Love'  that Totally Kate got her hands on said after Jack and  Mary ---and Pat and Faith --- break up they were putting Jack and Faith together.   Pat and Faith were to break up because Faith wanted marriage and Pat didn't  and we know 1975 Jack didn't want marriage either ---but perhaps early rough drafts versions of Jack he wasn't anti-marriage.

I would have loved some insight into the Nell story, for example.

the Nell story was one of my favorite stories on the show.

I've always been curious as to how long Nell's story would have continued ---and what it would have been ---if the show didn't have to shorten the story because Diana van der Vlis' health forced her to quit. A Nell/Seneca/Jill triangle? So few women doctors back then ---could Nell have become a mentor to Faith? How would she have reacted to Bucky and Reenie?

The fact that they didnt give mary Carney more time

Also why replace John Blazo after a year only to dump his recast 3 months later

10 hours ago, Chris 2 said:

My guess is that they didn’t want John Blazo for another long term deal, and they brought in Robert Finoccoli as a temp to finish things up until they could write out Pat.

Mary Carney was the best of a bad bunch. But she didn’t have Kate Mulgrew’s big presence/attitude, so I think she would have been fighting an uphill battle.

Another issue the Mary recasts had to deal with was that Claire Labine said she didn't know how to write for a married couple.

I expected to hear John Blazo something  about the the viewer reaction of the Pat/Nancy interfaith relationship.

I'm about half way through the book...a great read !

Curious the consensus on the rounds and rounds of re-casting of the Ryans.  Of course, actors leave...but for so many others, were Claire and Paul making bad choices, or was it network interference, or what was causing such churn ?

I'm at the point where Anne Gillespie was pushed out.  Was her negative attitude so disruptive that it was worth ANOTHER recast of a Ryan ?!  Yes - we got Marg who was the definitive Siobhan, but did Ellen Barrett and ABC not realize how disruptive all the re-casting was to story, audience and cast harmony ?

    All those reasons, I suspect.

It looks like the show was more willing to put up with poor behavior from the men (Michael Hawkins, Michael Levin, Roscoe Born) than the women. I can't picture those men being taken by the hand and led off the set like they did with Ann.

  14. 23 hours ago, althea-davis said:

I liked Faith Catlin as Faith. I thought she fit the part well. Faith, the character, was originally written as an oddball: a prudish, uptight person uncomfortable in her own skin. Faith played that well. I think she just fit.

I often wondered if Faith's odd behavior and body language was meant to be seen as endearing ---which I did find it at times---but most other times not.

She certainly received plenty of male attention ----Bucky and Kenneth fell for her at first sight, and Pat. When she was missing, they said there was a hospital delivery guy who had a crush on her. This was  was different instead of having her be ignored or treated like an outcast because of her peculiarities.

She wasn't shy but quite vocal about loathing Roger and also her dislike of Nell and Delia. She stood up for herself.

  15.  From the new book Ryan's Hope: An Oral History of Daytime's Groundbreaking Soap

Roscoe Born said  his Santa Barbara character, Robert Barr, was the most prototypical soap character he ever played and it was  most prototypical soap triangle he was in. He said he did excellent work and earned an Emmy nomination. He also thought he was nominated because it was high profile--- he did more soap press than he had ever done before during Santa Barbara. The soap may have pushed for the nomination to get him to re-sign.

  16. From the new book Ryan's Hope: An Oral History of Daytime's Groundbreaking Soap

Cali Timmins received an offer she couldn't refuse from Another World. She thought the character Paulina was going to be different from Maggie but in some ways she felt she was playing the same character--- only with less guts. Although there were great people like Victoria Wyndham ---there was a lot of backstabbing and competiveness. She did not enjoy playing the role.

  17. From the new book ---   Ryan's Hope: An Oral History of Daytime's Groundbreaking Soap

Ilene Kristen described her time on Loving as Norman Gilpin as lovely, creative, and fun---she loved what Millee Taggart and Tom King had her do. She and Walter Bobbie stood out. She said it was stupid that she turned down a contract but stayed a year as recurring.

Louise Shaffer wrote for Loving. She called it a bad show ---it never had anything good. Was told to write less dialogue for actors who couldn't speak English very well. Described it as a nightmare but she needed the money.

  18. From the book Ryan's Hope: An Oral History of Daytime's Groundbreaking Soap

Helen Gallagher hated her role as Dr. Maud Boylan on One Life to Live.

Roscoe Born called Mitch Laurence on One Life to Live his favorite soap character. The two summer of 1985 & 1986 was the most fun he ever had a soap. They also treated him well and paid him well. More people watched OLTL than RH.
