The Clear Horizon
I wonder how long they were together. I am not even sure how long he was with Holliman. Either way, marriages to fans can be an easy way to beard for some men.

I also thought of @Vee although I have a feeling his story suggestions were better than what we are going to get. Neither did I. I remember her as being very twitchy and draining. Maybe she's calmed down over the years but there was no reason to not find a newer talent for this part. This is another example of production that has been in the game for so long as to become ossified. The Maxie replacement makes sense. Hopefully Lucy will be treated with some type of respect. I agree we still won't be seeing Scott. This return is probably 5-10 years too late. It's not going to be the same without Scotty there. I'm not even sure who she will be paired with. I would have said Cassius, but he is probably going to be shackled to Make Joss Great Again.

I think MBE did as well as anyone could have with Katherine. The only complaint I have is I don't think she was able to bring enough layers, but the writing didn't either. The biggest issue with Katherine is she was brought in for a specific story and there was no reason for her to be there after Scott left. I do wonder if having MBE in the part made them keep the character for much longer than warranted. Billy had his moments, but I don't think he was ever suited to play such a complex lead role. I know AJ was rarely treated as a leading man even with Sean Kanan in the part, but he had the potential. Maybe nothing would have changed given Guza's love of Jason and hatred for the Quartermaines, but if nothing else Sean had more chemistry with Sarah Brown. I don't know what happened with Matt Ashford. I think that is another case where the story they had planned for him was thin and didn't last long. Then John Beradino died. They waited too long to bring Tom back. I don't think they had any idea what to do with him by the point of him having romps with Felicia.

@Franko Thank you again for your weekly recaps. I especially appreciate the time you spend on smaller characters I barely know of or just know the basic story of. For instance, the medical dramas Buzz is now speedrunning through. I don't really care for Jimmy Lee (although Steve Bond did look better early on without the tan and more haggard presence) but it's interesting seeing them try to fit him around before he's written out at the end of the year. (did Bond want to leave?) I think your recaps are the only way I'd likely go through anything with Rick, Ginny and Mike. I just don't have a great deal of use for Robinson and Judith Chapman depends on her material and screen partners. I know Chapman thought highly of playing Ginny (I believe her words were "God gave me a good one"), so I'm glad she enjoyed herself. I hope you can see "new" episodes again soon.

I wouldn't be surprised. It may also be why they started having Trina singing - not because BtG is full of singing, but because they don't want to use her much but she's there and they know she has fans, so let's have her sing because they figure black women love to sing. (I know Trina did sing at the Nurses Ball but I didn't think it was a passion of hers) A story mostly remembered for how Kristina Wagner pronounced the word, "memoir." I mostly remember Faison in a greenhouse, smelling a flower again and again. Obrecht is best used in moments like the scenes a few days ago where she saw through Willow's lies about Drew's condition and told Nina to wake up. I think they only did this because they were trying crossovers in that period (91-94 or so). I imagine Guza must have been the impetus since he brought him back to GH. I know Anders Hove later panned the whole thing (IIRC he also panned his 1999 return in the same interview).

ALL: Escapism vs any semblance of reality
Thank you for giving some details on individual writers. I always appreciate the info you share. I have not watched a great deal of BtG yet so I am not sure if the influence shows through. My issue is more writers who are in a position of power. The basics don't seem to be there and neither is a love of art or wanting to bring out the best of the genre. Instead the whole thing is treated as trash or as a time filler.

ABC did trust her appeal enough for a spinoff, but other than the Nurses' Ball and the Mac/Felicia wedding she no longer had any presence on GH (maybe she was at Katherine's funeral - I can't remember). So to GH viewers she became detached. When PC ended Guza/JFP were able to just give her and Kevin the appearance at Lila's funeral as a parting gift and moved on with no fuss. She did return on a more frequent basis, a decade later, but to such a different world. I don't think any of those viewers who came into the show in the mid '90s/late '90s/early '00s have it out for Lucy, but I think she just doesn't matter to them, and that is still a big portion of who the show caters to. That's one of the reasons they can get away with moments like the ritual humiliation of Deception, and Home & Hearth or whatever it's called.

Lucy was thrown away by the show decades ago. So was Felicia, but Felicia had a main character for a daughter and also a pairing they could slot her back into. Lucy had neither of those (Kevin had been gone from GH for as long as Lucy and Scott/Lucy have never worked as a true romantic pairing). While Lucy did interact with Sonny, her biggest years as a character were before he began dominating the show. She means nothing to that whole generation of fans who only watch for Sonny, Jason, Carly, Sam (when she was around), Liz, etc. That's always going to hurt her. I do think the writing is less humiliating than it was in the last few years, faint praise as that may be.
