A 44-year wait is over! Ashleigh Barty wins the Australian Open and becomes the first home winner in either men's or women's singles since Chris O'Neil in 1978!   :D

Australian Open: Ashleigh Barty wins first Melbourne title by beating Danielle Collins

Had a ground pass for today, and was able to watch the Barty/Collins game in Margaret Court Arena, got home in time to see the last game of the doubles.

Nice for the home crowd with an all-Australian Men's Double Final: Kokkinakis/Kyrgios vs Ebden/Purcell    :)

The two K’s seem to have made the mens doubles more viewable. I have seen some mention that this match is M&M v Special K.

Medvedev mentions Novak in his victory speech and the stadium erupts in booooooos

He then mentions Rafa and Roger and the stadium erupts in cheers.😂

Which makes me think that Novak would have been booed. Most people in Melbourne have been doing the right thing during lockdowns.

    RH of Melbourne

The season just finished airing. It’s available on Hayu outside of the USA.

The season really missed Gin(er) and Lydiot, but Janet cemented herself as a take no prisoners Queen who battled against a few very determined newbies hell bent on trying to gaslight the audience against her.

Janet triumphed. Jackie and Gamble were back and totally hilarious in their support of her.

If you have access, give this season a watch, it was fun!

Was just going to ask about this. Was not to fond of two of the ladies. Was so happy for Jackie.

That NYTimes opinion column says that an extraordinary 90 percent of Australians are fully vaccinated. (and it links its source).

So yeah Australians are angry that an antivax idiot felt entitled come to Australia to compete.

There's other stuff in that opinion column about politicians having unfirm rules.

But the 90% stood out to me.

This is from our daily paper in melbourne.

  6. Schedule for round 1 has been released. Djokovic at the moment will be playing the 2nd game on the night session.

If the federal court decides that he will be deported he will be replaced with a lucky loser.

What is it with all these people saying that the World #1 is being treated unfairly and being disrespected. As far as I can see Ash is being treated and respected very well.

    BREAKING

Novak Djokovic has failed his last-ditch court hearing. He is set to be deported and miss the Australian Open.

Apparently, the hearing that just occurred was procedural.

The actual hearing (sigh) is Sunday morning local time-- 5:30 pm EST Saturday.

Just a little over 12 hours from now. Will be interesting TV viewing tomorrow morning.

I don't know what tournaments Novak plans on playing this year. He won't be able to play unvaccinated.

Darren Cahill thinks Novak will fight this in ever tournament he plans to play.

Do players have to be vaccinated for all the 4 slams?

Why does tennis media still waste time reporting on Bernard Tomic? His behavior is just abhorrent at this point.

I just ignore this attention seeking bleep bleep bleep

One of Novak Djokovic's main rivals has accused the world No 1 of making vaccinated players "look like fools" at the Australian Open.

World No 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas attacked Djokovic for "playing by his own rules" while the vast majority of competitors had got the jab "in order to come and perform".

Tensions between players surfaced as the Serb was finally poised to find out whether he faced deportation following his drawn out visa wrangle.

As the Australian Government edged closer to an announcement, Tsitsipas became the third top-five player to suggest he would not be disappointed if Djokovic was forced to leave.

The Greek player, who lost to Djokovic in last year's Roland Garros final, said arriving in Australia without having the vaccine was effectively putting the grand slam at risk.

"The stats say 98 per cent of players have been vaccinated and did what they had to do in order to come and perform and play in Australia," he told Indian network WIO News.

For sure, he's been playing by his own rules and has been doing what not many players had the guts to do, especially after the ATP announced certain criteria for players to enter the country. No one really thought they could come to Australia unvaccinated and not having to follow the protocols... it takes a lot of daring to do that and putting the grand slam at risk, which I don't think many players would do."

Tsitsipas said: "There are two ways to look at it. One side of it is that almost every single player is fully vaccinated... and have followed the protocols to play in Australia. On the other hand, it seems not everyone is playing by the rules... a very small majority chose to follow their own way, which kind of makes the majority look like fools."

A bit more from out papers.

Novak Djokovic visa application latest news: Poll shows Australians want star deported

If it was up to the people of Australia, Novak Djokovic would already on a flight home to Serbia.

As the wait for answers continues in Novak Djokovic’s visa saga which clouds his Australian Open chances, the people of Australia have spoken: and they want him out.

In an exclusive poll conducted by News Corp this week, a stunning 84 per cent of the more than 61,000 respondents voted that the Australian Government should try to deport the world No.1 from Australian shores.

The vote that matters, that of Immigration Minister Alex Hawke, is expected to be delivered on Friday - but he can be in no doubt what decision the wider public is pushing for.

From me - I hope that the parents of the ball kids will tell Tennis Aust that they don't want their kids on the same court and Djokovic. (I have a ticket for the Saturday)

    Apparently this is the latest.

    3:38pm NEW TIME CONFIRMED

The Australian Open draw will now take place at 4:15 AEDT.

It’s a delay of more than an hour to the original time. We will bring the draw live here as well as the ScoMo press conference.

Australian Open draw postponed amid uncertainty over Novak Djokovic.

More drama at Melbourne Park where organisers have ‘cancelled the draw until further notice’ amid uncertainty over Novak Djokovic’s deportation status.

An announcement at Melbourne Park has just advised that the tournament draw will not be held on Thursday afternoon as planned

The draw was meant to have happened at 3pm AEDT.

It remains unconfirmed when proceedings will continue.

It is the latest blow to the tournament which has been dominated by doubts over Djokovic’s participation amid a visa fiasco.

Yep due to an outbreak of COVID from a hotel that quarantined returned overseas passengers. It was a hotel that had nothing to do with the tennis players and some people are blaming the players.

I'm so happy! I loathe Kenin and her dad.

Dominic played last night, unfortunately due to going into a hard lockdown for five days I miss out on going to the tennis.

I don't know what that is, but if it's restaurant/food delivery, in the US we have GrubHub and Doordash and other services.  I use them all the time.  I didn't see Uber Eats commercials during the Australian Open, but I've not seen Doordash or GrubHub commercials here either.  We also have InstaCart who delivers from local grocery stores...I have a Wegmans near me that is crazy to go into...it's a wonderful grocery store that has a deli, pastry kitchen, sushi bar, and hot bar with prepared foods...full butcher and seafood, specialty cheeses, olive bar with dolmas and mozzerella/tomatos, full service grocery store and even some small appliances.  I use InstaCart whenever I'm lazy.
