  1. Denise Richards

Prepare for the hunt when Lifetime premieres “Hunting Housewives” tonight, Saturday, March 9 at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT. The movie stars Denise Richards (“The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”), NeNe Leakes (“The Real Housewives of Atlanta”), Kym Johnson Herjavec (“Dancing With the Stars”) and Melyssa Ford (“The Joe Budden Podcast”) as four housewives who find themselves stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash. To survive and return home to their families, they must have their wits and determination in check.

In the film, four friends, Karla Dodds (Richards), Rebel Carron-Whitman (Leakes), Joli Symons (Johnson Herjavec) and Sharell Bouvier (Ford), go on a much-needed spa retreat weekend away from their husbands, children and busy schedules when suddenly they find themselves downed in a plane crash. With no basic survival knowledge, the housewives must use their wits and whatever is in their designer bags to survive in the rugged wilds. When they realize they are not alone, even frenemies must align to outwit their hunters.

Produced by Brain Power Studio in association with Nicely Entertainment for Lifetime, “Hunting Housewives” is executive produced by Beth Stevenson, Nancy Yeaman, Stan Hum and Vanessa Shapiro. Marco Deufemia directed the movie from a script written by Paula Tiberius.

Watch a trailer for the movie below.

  2. Not sure if this has already been brought up elsewhere, but The Hollywood Reporter recently did a story on Paramount cutting costs across films and shows. Not sure if this has anything to do with CBS' thinking when it came to The Gates, or anything else, but here you go:

Paramount, Citing Experiment During Strikes, to Cut Costs Per Title For Films, Series

Paramount CEO Bob Bakish and CFO Naveen Chopra explained their plan to reduce content costs on the company's earnings call.

    Speak on it!

PS. Will let you know when she pops up again. ;)

But perhaps that's the thing. Soaps have definitely proven they can go on and on. And the world completely still loves them all over. What if the production actually put promotions into it though? Ratings might still decline due to how we as people view shows now (streaming, tv systems, live), but if it is good...people will come and be grabbed hold.

    Spoiler

Vail Bloom is on next week actually.

Christel Khalil’s Back as Lily in Genoa City, and That Spells Trouble for Daniel and Heather on ‘The Young and the Restless’

Christel Khalil returned to the set of "The Young and the Restless" last month to begin taping her return as Lily, and now we know when you'll see her back on-screen.

As previously reported, Christel Khalil is back taping at “The Young and the Restless” as Lily Winters, and now we finally know when she’ll officially be back in Genoa City!

When we last saw Lily, she rushed out of town in December to be with her daughter Mattie, who had been among several (fictional) Standford University students trapped on campus by a wildfire that surrounded them. The storyline was written to explain Khalil’s absence as she had gone on maternity leave in real life after revealing in a June 2023 Instagram post that she was pregnant with her second child, her first with fiancé Sam Restagno — Khalil also has a son, Michael Caden, from a previous relationship.

Although an exact date of birth for the couple’s child has not been shared, Khalil did indicate in a November 2023 Instagram post that they were expecting a boy. The post highlighted her baby bump and the bond between mother and father. In the caption, Khail said, “Getting closer to meeting our baby boy…”

In an Instagram story posted last month, Khalil shared a short but receptive message, captioning a photo of herself standing in a group shot alongside co-stars Bryton James (Devon) and Eric Braeden (Victor), which said, “Back At It!”

    The Cheating Game

Since Lily’s been out of town, a lot has been happening behind her back; namely, Daniel (Michael Graziadei) has been having a secret relationship with his ex, Heather (Vail Bloom), and things are about to get even messier when the two display public affection without considering where they are. So, when Lily returns during the week of March 11-15, 2024 (more specifically, pencil in Wednesday, March 13), does that mean she’ll catch the two in the act? Or will she have just missed some PDA? You’ll just have to tune in to find out!

    “The Bold and the Beautiful”
    CBS

In March 2022, CBS announced it had renewed “The Bold and the Beautiful” for two additional seasons, keeping the series on the air through at least the 2023-2024 television season. What wasn’t known then was that built into that contract was an option to extend the deal to a third year.

Last week, shortly after the network announced it was picking up “The Young and the Restless” for an additional four seasons, it was reported that CBS would be exercising its one-year option for “The Bold and the Beautiful” as well. TV Line, which first reported the news of the extension, noted the current season renewals for the two CBS soaps ran through May 2024.

News of the “The Young and the Restless” renewal caused worry and confusion among fans of “The Bold and the Beautiful,” as they questioned why one show got a four-year pickup and the other only an extension. The matter was addressed at the top of the broadcast of “Bold Live” during the Friday, March 1 episode the popular YouTube series hosted by “The Bold and the Beautiful” supervising producer Casey Kasprzyk.

“Well, the truth is, we are two different shows with two different contracts, two different deals. So it’s not my place to really comment on it other than to say that we’re on a three-year deal, and so the third year was picked up, [which is] the way it works,” commented Kasprzyk within the first three minutes of “Bold Live,” adding, “So next year will be when we negotiate for a brand new contract. So we are currently on a deal that gives us one more year. So we’re on through 2025.”

In closing, Kasprzyk said, “Thank you, CBS, we love being on CBS, and we couldn’t be happier. So we’ll have more news next year, and hopefully, we’ll be here for a very, very long time. So, just wanted to clear that up.”

Kasprzyk’s comments came before Wednesday’s announcement that CBS is developing a new daytime drama series called “The Gates.” Michele Val Jean, a former scriptwriter at “The Bold and the Beautiful” who departed the soap last month after a 12-year run, is spearheading the potential series as showrunner, executive producer and writer.

That said, there is no reason to believe “The Gates” news has any bearing on the future of “The Bold and the Beautiful” on CBS. Additionally, the network has not stated when it hopes to launch “The Gates” should it order it to series. Unlike most primetime shows, a daytime soap opera can take as little as several months to several years before it evolves from an idea to becoming a reality on television screens.

Traditionally, CBS has given two-year renewal orders for “The Bold and the Beautiful.” The most recent renewal in 2022 marked the first time CBS had an extension option built into the contract for an additional year that could be exercised when the time came.

Launch March 23, 1987, “The Bold and the Beautiful” airs Weekdays at 1:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT on CBS, following all-new episodes of “The Young and the Restless.” The late William J. Bell and the late Lee Phillip Bell created both shows, which combined have taken home 14 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series

Watch Kasprzyk on “Bold Live” below. The show also includes an extensive conversation with “The Bold and the Beautiful” star Tanner Novlan (Dr. John “Finn” Finnegan).

  6. The Gates, #TheGates, Michele Val Jean, CBS, Studios, NAACP, #CBS, #NAACP

On Wednesday, CBS Studios and NAACP Venture announced “The Gates,” an all-new daytime drama series currently being developed for CBS that follows the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. Veteran soap scribe Michele Val Jean (“The Bold and the Beautiful,” “General Hospital”) will be spearheading the potential series where she is set up as writer, showrunner and executive producer alongside executive producers Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner.

In her first official statement since the news was announced, Val Jean took to X (formerly Twitter) and said, “I’m so profoundly touched by the overwhelmingly positive response to #TheGates. What made this announcement especially poignant was it happened on @JackieZeman ‘s birthday. She would have loved this. #angelspirit.”

Val Jean’s post referenced the late Jacklyn Zeman, who played Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Spencer on General Hospital for more than 45 years before she sadly passed away after a short battle with cancer last May. The two worked together during Val Jean’s time as a writer on the ABC daytime drama series, which netted her four Daytime Emmy Awards when the show took home the Emmy for Outstanding Writing Team for a Drama Series in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2009.

In a follow-up statement on X (formerly Twitter), Val Jean noted, “To everyone who reached out about #TheGates  know that I appreciate you and I’ll get around to liking:responding to your comments so you know I see you But it’s gonna take a minute so be patient. In the meantime know I’m humbled and grateful for your support. Wow. Let’s do this.”

Of course, with “The Gates” becoming the first daytime drama series in development in nearly 25 years, Val Jean was undoubtedly inundated with text messages, DMs, and phone calls congratulating her for not only her continued success but also for becoming the first Black person and first Black woman in the history of television to oversee a daytime soap opera as showrunner/executive producer. In fact, Val Jean remains the only Black person and Black woman to have ever held the position of head writer or co-head writer of a daily serial since the medium (including the radio era) was first introduced nearly 100 years ago!

Note: Sheila Ducksworth, president of CBS/NAACP Production Venture, is also an executive producer for “The Gates” and is a Black woman.

In late 2000, Val Jean and Elizabeth Korte were named co-head writers of “General Hospital” before an executive producer change at the ABC soap resulted in their tenure lasting just four months (January 2001 to April 2001).

Nearly 20 years after she joined the writing team at “General Hospital,” Val Jean made the jump to “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 2012 as a scriptwriter, winning three additional Daytime Emmy Awards for her work (2015, 2016 and 2020). She remained with the show until last month when it was announced she would be exiting the series.

In a post on Facebook, Val Jean said at the time of her exit, “I left Bold & Beautiful a couple of weeks ago. It was an amazing run and I loved being there, but it was time for a change. I’m forever grateful to Brad Bell [head writer/executive producer] for giving me a soft place to land when I needed one and to have been part of that writing team full of tremendous people. You guys are always in my heart.”

Overall, Val Jean has received 17 Daytime Emmy Award nominations since she began her daytime career in 1989 as a writer for “Generations,” the first daytime drama series to feature a predominantly Black cast, and the series many have already compared “The Gates.”

Just over 24 hours after the news first came out about “The Gates,” Val Jean took to X (formerly Twitter), to follow up on her previous statement, saying, “You know what? I lied. Way too many comments/likes to reply to individually. I thank you for every single one and now I have to get to work! #TheGates.”

    “The Gates”

Among the many firsts for “The Gates,” despite the show only being in the development stage right now, include:

    • First daytime soap opera with a Black person/Black woman as showrunner/executive producer.
    • First daytime soap opera in development since the launch of “Passions” in 1999.
    • First daytime soap opera in development to feature a predominantly Black cast since the launch of “Generations” in 1989.
    • First daytime soap opera in development at CBS since the launch of “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 1987.
    • First daytime soap opera in development to be produced by or in partnership with P&G Studios (Proctor & Gamble) since the launch of “Texas” in 1980.
    • If picked up to series, “The Gates” would become the 15th daytime soap opera produced by or in partnership with P&G Studios (Proctor & Gamble).

In addition to writing for “General Hospital,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Santa Barbara,” and “Generations,” Val Jean wrote for “Port Charles,” the short-lived spinoff of “General Hospital.” She also served as a consulting producer on the short-lived OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) primetime soap “Ambitions,” created by Jamey Giddens (writer, “Days of our Lives”).

“I could not be more proud and excited for my brilliant friend @MicheleValJean who may have also just saved the future of daytime dramas,” said Jon Lindstrom (Kevin Collins, “General Hospital”) on X (formerly Twitter) in response to the news of “The Gates” at CBS.

Other daytime veterans sending congratulations include Eileen Davidson, Ian Buchanan, Nancy Lee Grahn and Ted King, among others.

In announcing “The Gates,” fellow executive producer Sheila Ducksworth said in a statement, “‘The Gates’ will be everything we love about daytime drama, from a new and fresh perspective.” She added, “This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television. With multi-dimensional characters, juicy storylines and Black culture front and center, ‘The Gates’ will have impactful representation, one of the key touchstones of the venture.”

Speaking more on CBS/NAACP Venture and P&G’s involvement, Ducksworth shared, “I’m excited to develop this project with CBS and P&G, two of the longest and most passionate champions of broadcast and daytime television, and the NAACP, whose enduring commitment to Black voices and artists is both powerful and inspiring. I also want to thank CBS’ George Cheeks, NAACP’s Derrick Johnson and P&G’s Marc Pritchard for their personal involvement and support to take our next step forward with ‘The Gates.’”

On X (formerly Twitter), Ducksworth shared news about the project, saying in a tweet, “Big Things Coming!!!” On the platform, “The Gates” (#TheGates) trended for much of Wednesday, peeking at no. 11 in the United States. The potential show also trended in multiple categories, including Movies & TV and Soap Operas.

At press time, several questions remain unanswered, including whether it will be a half-hour or one-hour series, where the show will be taped, when it will premiere (i.e. this fall, next season or 2025-2026 season), who will star in the series, who else will be part of the writing team, and much more. Considering the show was just announced as being in development, this is no surprise.

To reiterate Ducksworth and Val Jean’s comments, “Big Things Coming!” and “Let’s Do This!”

What does that mean for Days of our Lives?

Could CBS use this new show to play hardball with Bold and Beautiful?  Could Bold and Beautiful try to go elsewhere, to another network perhaps?

I wouldn't worry about B&B. I don't doubt this is why CBS opted to just give the show an extension for another year instead of negotiating a new deal as it leaves the network to worry about other areas across its lineup while enabling it to put its focus on developing this show.

B&B is not in danger despite those demos.

It's wild that last time a soap was launched there was no social media or YouTube. I'm not sure there was Wikipedia and IMDB.

Right! And there was no SON. At best, there was SoapZone (forget it's name before it was called that, btw) and the AMC Pages (now called Soap Central). Soap Opera Network launched in October 2001, more than two years after "Passions." Theoretically, none of us were alive in the social media/message board instance in terms of our respective user names. Heck, I didn't even go by my real name back in those early days. How far we've come in the last 22-25 years.

I hope If & When The Gates moves forward that CBS doesnt pull what NBC did with Passions . They required their contract actors to sign for 5 years. That is why there were not many big name daytime soap starts on Passions at the beginning.

Outside of episode count and differences in pay, five years isn't actually something I'd worry about. Primetime shows required seven season deals and even with shorter filming schedules, it gave actors limited chances of doing a movie and a series simultaneously. A soap could still manage this similar to how GH is now doing with NIcholas Chavez. The only problem is the actor should remember soaps ARE NOT a stepping stone for "bigger and better things." They are just as much a TV show as "9-1-1" or "This is Us."

  11. Also, so with Sheila Ducksworth as co-EP from CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, Kimberly Doebereiner from P&G as VP of advertising, what part of CBS, NAACP and P&G are the other two from?

Talking of Leon Russell and Derrick Johnson

Yeah, that's what I was discussing earlier in the thread some pages back. Glad I wasn't crazy for noticing them enduring for people in front of and behind the camera (and the networks) during strikes and the streamer implosion.

    Yup. You not crazy.

    Just believe in THRIVING! Haha.

So, apparently, P&G started to throw their hat back in the ring again for scripted content in 2020/2021. Of course, the goal is to push their brands in a subliminal/less obvious way.

They also have their hand in producing films, documentaries, and streaming content.

With Fewer Ads on Streaming, Brands Make More Movies

Imagine is also working with the consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble. The company, which effectively created soap operas when it began to sponsor serial radio dramas in the 1930s to help promote its soap products, is cofinancing a feature-length film with Imagine called “Mars 2080.” It will be directed by Eliza McNitt and begin production later this year. The film, which is scheduled to be released theatrically by IMAX in 2022 before moving to a streaming service, focuses on a family resettling on Mars.

It grew out of a breakfast in New York in 2019, where Mr. Wilkes, Mr. Howard and Marc Pritchard, Procter & Gamble’s chief brand officer, discussed technology in the pipeline. The Imagine team later toured Procter & Gamble’s research labs in Cincinnati, seeing examples of its “home of the future” products and meeting its scientists.

Kimberly Doebereiner, the vice president of Procter & Gamble’s future of advertising division, said the company hoped to do more long-form storytelling, like “The Cost of Winning,” the four-part sports documentary its shaving brand Gillette helped produce. It debuted on HBO in November.

“We want to be more interesting so consumers are leaning into our experiences and we’re creating content that they want to see as opposed to messages that are annoying to them,” she said. “Finding a way to have content that is in places where ads don’t exist is definitely one of the reasons why we’re leaning into this.”

It’s all part of a deliberate shift by brands to try to integrate themselves more fully into consumers’ lives, the way companies like Apple and Amazon have, said Dipanjan Chatterjee, an analyst with Forrester. And they want to do so without commercials, which, he said, have “zero credibility” with consumers.

“If the right story has the right ingredients and it becomes worthwhile for sharing, it doesn’t come across as an intrusive bit of advertising,” Mr. Chatterjee said. “It feels much more like a natural part of our lives.”

Pandemic taught them they can't sell soap to an audience at home by simply advertising in the supermarkets. They need to get their brand back in the minds of everyday consumers. Seriously though, this is great. Already reached out to a contact at the studios to see if I might get more info on this and what else is cooking up behind the scenes. As I said last summer, pandemic and strikes were eye openers to the industry. During both occasions, the only genre or daypart still chucking along was daytime and soaps in particular. It didn't go unnoticed.

Now, that Net Code contract will be even more valuable when it's up for renewal soon. Hopefully, SAG-AFTRA pays attention and secures a good deal the AMPTP can live with. It'll only help spearhead more developments.

I take your point, but the problem is I don't think broadcast/network as is has a long-term future track either. I think the best we can hope for (for both the networks and for shows' extended longevity) is a kind of hybrid model for certain shows, where they may be both on network and straight to stream.

Agreed. A hybrid model is the way to go, and is even more evident now that studios that own TV networks are seeing the potential in airing originally ordered as streaming exclusive series and placing them on their broadcast networks months later. ABC did it with Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building," CBS is doing it this summer with Paramount+'s "Tulsa King," and NBC has done it with several shows on Peacock, along with Disney+ shows on ABC. A hybrid model is the way of the future. Not exclusively broadcast or streaming. That's where I see things going.

TV networks will NEVER go away in the sense that CBS will be canceled in five years. Despite reduced eye balls, only on CBS can 120+ million people watch the Super Bowl without a glitch all at once. You can't even dare think to do that (with current technology) on a streamer. Even Netflix is not immune to performance glitches for their live shows. The worst they'll have to deal with is in 2025 when they have live WWE programming from "Monday Night RAW."

  14. I'm just going to say this. Personally, streaming is NOT the future of soaps. It's an element of where soaps can be watched. As evidenced by the recent streaming failures across the industry, there isn't truly any shows that will survive long-term on a streaming service. Some of the most watched shows don't even go beyond five or six seasons, if they are lucky, and they only get 6-10 episodes a season.

    5 minutes ago, John said:

Even though The Gates is being developed for CBS, I wouldnt be shocked if it just went streaming on Paramount Plus. I feel streaming is the future for daily soaps.

Yes, of course, it'll be available on Paramount+, or whatever that eventually evolves into by the time the show (hopefully) reaches the air. That's not in question.

I think what bothers me about today's announcement, and this has nothing to do whatsoever with your post or you, John, in particular, but people can't seem to read. I can't tell you how many people asked when is it going to air or where is it going to air when it is clearly stated it's for CBS. Countless people on social are asking if this is going to Paramount+ and I'm like...not even in the PR about it was Paramount+ even mentioned.

  15. Not sure if this analogy makes sense, but let's try:

If you spend $20 because you are cheap and get $2 back on your purchase/investment, you've now lost $18. However, if you spend $30 and get back $18, you've only lost $12.

In the end, cheap is cheap, but if you lose more money than you've spent, what have you really gained?

  16. Cassandra James, Terry Randolph, General Hospital, GH, GH ABC, #GH, #GeneralHospital

Marking her first day back on set since October, Cassandra James announced on Threads that she is returning to “General Hospital,” where she appears as Terry Randolph.

“First day on set since October. Almost half a year,” noted James on Meta-owned Threads, a rival platform to X (formerly Twitter), of how long since she was last at the Prospect Studios where the soap opera tapes. “Choosing gratitude because I know most actors have waited longer. Just imagine if the job you trained to do, that you’re good at and you love was consistently demonstrated to be ephemeral. That having a second job was not only normalized but systemically suggested. When you come home and stream our work on your TV, artists are wondering why we rarely feel valued enough to make our job a living.”

James, who is trans, first appeared on “General Hospital” in June 2018. Her character was introduced as a childhood male friend of Elizabeth’s (Rebecca Herbst) who, in story, transitioned later in life to be their authentic self. The character became a hit with fans, and James has appeared in a recurring capacity ever since.

In 2021, James took to Instagram after former co-star Ingo Rademacher (ex-Jasper “Jax” Jacks) shared a transphobic post on his Instagram story.

“I am aware of a transphobic post shared by a fellow ‘General Hospital’ actor,” said James on Instagram in response to Rademacher’s post at the time. “Shame on you. You have some serious unlearning and education to do. I feel deeply disappointed that such a public display of ignorance could come from our ‘GH’ family.” James added to the post, saying, “Misgendering trans folks is violence and if you come for one of us, you come for all of us. The cis world doesn’t get to decide which of us is valuable. I am so proud of the fans for always holding us to a high standard, for calling out transphobia and violence.”

There is no word yet on when fans can expect James to return on-screen. However, her character’s return will mark the first time James will appear under the show’s new head writing team, led by Patrick Mulcahey and Elizabeth Korte. Their material is set to begin airing in the next couple of episodes. The two replace outgoing writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor.

Did it say exactly where production is taking place - NYC or LA?

Or could it be an Atlanta based production? Atlanta’s emerged as a hub for cheaper film/television production and is often referred to as the “Black Hollywood.”

As the show is only in development, everything relating to casting, location, length, etc, is currently being discussed behind the scenes. One thing is for sure: soaps take longer to get off the ground, but with the way things are done in daytime and TV in general these days, it's possible this show could be up and running as early as October. Or it could debut as late as fall 2025. We'll see. Either way, the way it was announced and what I know about the way it was announced, I would doubt it doesn't get a full series pickup. Especially with all parties involved. As noted by another poster, P&G isn't getting back into the soap game, especially with such an acclaimed writer as Michele Val Jean, to produce shit. So, I'm going on a limb and say this gets ordered.

MVJ is the MVP of daytime soaps, soap operas, and daytime dramas. Tell me otherwise, and I'll slap you! Haha.

  18. Potential Lineups (using CBS NY scheduling), assuming late 2024/2025 or 2025-2026 TV season.

Scenario A ("The Gates" is one-hour, "The Talk" is canceled):

    • 10:00 AM - Let's Make a Deal
    • 11:00 AM - The Price is Right
    • 12:30 PM - The Young and the Restless
    • 1:30 PM - The Bold and the Beautiful
    • 2:00 PM - The Gates

Scenario B ("The Gates" is one-hour, "The Talk" is canceled):

    • 10:00 AM - Let's Make a Deal
    • 11:00 AM - The Price is Right
    • 12:30 PM - The Young and the Restless
    • 1:30 PM - The Gates
    • 2:30 PM - The Bold and the Beautiful

Scenario C ("The Talk" stays on, "The Gates" replaces "The Bold and the Beautiful" -- not likely):

    • 10:00 AM - Let's Make a Deal
    • 11:00 AM - The Price is Right
    • 12:30 PM - The Young and the Restless
    • 1:30 PM - The Gates
    • 2:00 PM - The Talk

Scenario D ("The Talk" stays on but as half-hour, "The Gates" replaces "The Bold and the Beautiful" -- not likely):

    • 10:00 AM - Let's Make a Deal
    • 11:00 AM - The Price is Right
    • 12:30 PM - The Young and the Restless
    • 1:30 PM - The Gates
    • 2:30 PM - The Talk

Scenario E ("The Talk" stays on but as half-hour, "The Gates" is half-hour😞

    • 10:00 AM - Let's Make a Deal
    • 11:00 AM - The Price is Right
    • 12:30 PM - The Young and the Restless
    • 1:30 PM - The Bold and the Beautiful
    • 2:00 PM - The Gates
    • 2:30 PM - The Talk

Scenario F (terrible lineup, IMO -- "The Talk" stays on but as half-hour, "The Gates" is half-hour):

    • 10:00 AM - Let's Make a Deal
    • 11:00 AM - The Price is Right
    • 12:30 PM - The Young and the Restless
    • 1:30 PM - The Bold and the Beautiful
    • 2:00 PM - The Talk
    • 2:30 PM - The Gates
