Again, there will be three live shows: Two semi-finals (May 9th and 11th) and the grand final (May 13th). This is the second time that Ukraine will host the contest. So far, they have done compilations for the winning countries from 2010 (Germany), 2011 (Azerbaijan), 2012 (Sweden), 2013 (Denmark), 2014 (Austria), 2015 (Sweden) and 2016 (Ukraine). Russia's singer Julia Samoylova has been blacklisted by Ukraine's government because she had illegally travelled to Crimea in 2015. Thus, she is not allowed to enter the country. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) made the offer to include Russia's live performance via satellite link, but Channel One Russia declined. Russia debuted in 1994 and have so far achieved one win, four 2nd places and three 3rd places. They will probably return to the Contest next year. --- Currently, Italy is the hot favorite to win the 2017 Contest. The Top 10 in the betting odds also includes Bulgaria, Sweden, Portugal, Belgium, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, France and Romania. The rehearsals in Kiev begin on April 30th, 2017. --- Speaking of Romania: They have recently released a promotional video for their entry. I don't think I have ever heard so much crap before. This has to be one of the worst years ever! Yuck! Just a lot of wailing and shrieking. Belgium's singer looked like she was going to faint, the portuguese singer looked like he was stoned and when Omar from Slovenia winked at the camera I just felt so embarrassed.... The songs were average, and performance-wise, Armenia and Moldova were miles above the other qualifiers. Still can't believe that the bad performances of Australia and Belgium qualified over Iceland and Finland. Please register in order to view this content Some entries were so bad all you could do was laugh, but I think the Croatian entry was the worst. It was the most pretentious garbage I have ever heard, and the singer was so smarmy and full of himself it made me sick. To think that once upon a time the songs were written by composers who actually knew how to write songs, and performed by artists that could actually sing..... Former contestants like Céline Dion, Nana Mouskouri, Lara Fabian, Julio Iglesias, Vicky Leandros, Lulu and Sandie Shaw must feel embarrassed to be associated with this contest now when/if they see what it has become.
