They're all on borrowed time at this point. No one is going to get viewers up by the millions the way they used to with crazy outlandish stories. And consistency likely won't do it either - when viewers tune out now, most don't come back. The worst demo of all - whether it controls ad revenue or not is Women 18-34. There are more Women 18-34 at 3 pro football stadiums on 1 Sunday than are watching soaps day to day. That demo reflects the newer viewers to soaps. With 18-49 falling, and 18-34 lower than ever, with 25-54 slowly lowering as well - means the viewers who are quitting or literally dying off are no longer replaced by young viewers....because the soaps are not getting new viewers. 5 to 7 years ago if the W 18-49 number hit 1.0 the networks got very nervous and fidgety. You can't just keep arguing that it's not 5 years ago, and this is the best 'we' can do, and it's 'better' than anything else. I actually think it's smart of Y&R to push for the better production values - but if it doesn't pay off, cuts will happen again and again. They're not going to be able to pay the cast what most of them will want, and that's when people get cut or leave. I think at this point the best a soap can hope for is to hang on to the audience they have, because the demos are so bad, I don't see vast increases in viewership happening. Hang on to what you have is the best you can hope for, with maybe very small gains here and there once in a while, which will then balance out later. It's sad. As for B&B - I'm not shocked at all. It's become the Quinn show - I stopped watching a week and a half ago - was on vacation last week and haven't seen one minute. Practically every character has been dumbed down for the sake of the cartoon character's manipulating, and then nothing happens to her. On the B&B board a couple of weeks ago people were posting about just how beautiful she looks/is. I don't care - that doesn't make me want to watch...the character is a cartoon and has made the show completely unwatchable to me. But I only started re-watching about 3 years ago when I was able to work at home...but I watch Y&R intermittently during the day here and there and now turn to The Chew for its last half hour. I also get The Real 1 day behind during that timeslot so I've been flipping to that too sometimes.
