Will Horton: The Jessica Buchanan of DAYS?

Both are young, blonde, legacy characters of iconic soap couples within their respective shows' history. Both have seen their most definitive stories during an era under Gary Tomlin. Both should have been the leading man/lady of their respective age peer group. Both underwent significant recasting. Both haven't garnered positive reception since their re-cast. Both have been overshadowed by more superior love interests (Nash/Brody, Sonny) and more exciting family members (Natalie, Nick).

What went wrong?

He never had it. Smirker McGee's fans hated him before he ever debuted, because of their butthurt (no pun intended) over DAYS recasting early when Massey had already told them he was leaving.

I don't really think Massey was ever half as popular with DAYS viewers as Erin Torpey was with OLTL fans, nor did he grow up in the role, so I don't agree with the comparison.

And Nick was never a major presence on the show long enough to impact Will's character the way Natalie did with Jessica.

If you like random shouting, yes.

Uh, no. This comparison is kind of ridiculous and nonsense on its face.

  1. Erin Torpey's Jessica (as well as Bree Williamson's) was a young heroine for her entire adult run, not just Gary Tomlin's two-year tenure. She left a year after Natalie arrived (at the same time Tomlin was fired), but despite a few months of Jessica on the backburner in mid-late '02, Natalie never actually supplanted Erin's Jess. And when Bree took over they made her new Jessica eat the show for years, often with Natalie paying the cost. Bree's Jessica - and Jessica overall - also remained popular with the general audience, online criticisms aside.
  2. Neither Nash nor Brody ever surpassed Jessica in popularity. While Mark Lawson was, IMO, more talented, he was always considered a B or C player by the show. And Nash was dismissed the moment Forbes March gave OLTL any trouble about his story or contract renewal. Neither ever had a truly successful or popular pairing without Jessica; with Nash they never even tried, and Brody's rebound romance with Natalie was simply quadrangle bait to fill time with John and Jessica.
  3. Sonny is nice and all, but DAYS' key investment is in Will Horton and his family. It doesn't matter who's the better actor or who has a bigger fanbase at this point, they will always side with using WIll over Sonny.

You need a new thesis.
