10 Lessons Soap Operas Could Learn from Friends

I don't agree with #5. I think Friends definitely altered the characters as the series progressed. To some extent this was understandable, because people and characters evolve with the passage of time and life experiences. But at times they seemed to be making some of the same mistakes we see on soap operas. The writers would take one aspect of a character and blow it up to much greater heights.

Chandler started out as having dry, sardonic wit. By the end, he made idiotic jokes that nobody got. He couldn't even make it through a job interview without making idiotic, inappropriate comments that cost him the job.

Monica was always compulsive, but by the end she was completely shrill and annoying to her friends.

In the later years of the show, Phoebe and Monica had lost a lot of the chemistry to their friendship, and she almost seemed to be tolerating Monica. They even told us that Phoebe nearly ended the friendship a couple years before the show began. And Phoebe and (especially) Rachel didn't seem to like Chandler very much.

Oh, and let's not forget that Ross tried to have sex with his first cousin.
