Members YRfan23 Posted August 29, 2014 Members Share Posted August 29, 2014 So last night I was watching some of the new classic Y&R episodes I got (which I promise will be up here eventually) and on one of the episodes from 1993 Ashley and Blade are having lunch at Gina's. Gina greets them and Ashley introduces Blade to her. Gina says that she remembered Blade from a surprise party for Neil and Dru. I know that all sounds normal, but the thing is that I remember another earlier 93 episode being up on youtube which involved the wedding party for Jill and John at the Chancellor Estate, and the thing is that I clearly remember Blade and Gina having a conversation and acting like they were well acquainted already yet in this episode a couple months later they act like they are meeting for the first (well second) time..... This is typically something I always come down on Bill Bell about because I feel like he sometimes could not keep track of who knows each other already and who doesn't on Y&R. I guess being a big cast is what causes that problem but I just think that when it comes to producing a show it's important (maybe minor) to get all these facts straight.... Anyways I was wondering if there were other examples from soaps where they make it seem like characters haven't really met before yet the audience knows for a fact that they should already know each other better.....I guess I also wanted to know this to find out if this is just a Bill Bell habit or if other writers were guilty of it too... It isn't easy keeping track of everybody, I just sometimes think it was more noticeable with Bill Bell..... In real life I think we all have met people where at the time we act like we have gotten to know them well then we don't see them for months or years and when we do see them we have to allow ourselves to get reacquainted with them.....so I guess It's staying true to life in some ways... It doesn't sound like they forgot they'd already interacted. I don't know, I've always thought Y&R had really good continuity and gaffes like that (if that is the case) were the exception and not the rule. And I felt John and Theresa should have known each other better been that Shane is his BFF. Another thing that annoys me is some characters who return to Days that left prior 1991 comes back knowing John as John instead of mistakenly thinking he is Roman. Members Cheap21 Posted August 29, 2014 Members Share Posted August 29, 2014 I can get that for people that returned maybe 92-95ish but its been decades since John assumed the role of Roman and its common knowledge that he isnt him. Members Gray Bunny Posted August 29, 2014 Members Share Posted August 29, 2014 I thought it would've been a cute and accurate nod to history if Eve had made a remark about thinking of him as "Roman," or something like, "Last time I was in town, he was still Roman." Speaking of people who should have already known each other, I was surprised in 1996 when it was revealed that Vivian Alamain knew Stefano as "Rudolpho Meradi," some long ago lover. Wouldn't she have heard about Stefano? Seen his photo in the papers? I know her story with Victor & Vivian was kind of in a bubble, but it still made absolutely no sense. Members Mr. Vixen Posted August 29, 2014 Members Share Posted August 29, 2014 Yes, Anna debuted after Luke left in the 80's. By the time Luke had come back, Anna was "dead". She did return in 2006, while Luke was on the show, but I don't believe they interacted at all. And even if they had, it wasn't to the point that they would be the "old, close friends" that RC was trying to say they were. Members YRfan23 Posted August 29, 2014 Author Members Share Posted August 29, 2014 Maybe.....I guess also Gina was a pretty well known person cause of her restaurant and everyone whether they knew her well or not seemed very personal with her, so perhaps She was only thinking about that specific time with Blade cause it was the first time they had gotten to know each other a little better wheres before they just interacted in passing.... It really isn't entirely a big deal and honestly I didn't give it much thought until a little bit later, but I agree as much as I complain sometimes about Bell's continuity it def isn't as bad as maybe some of the other soaps....Y&R always made references to the past that actually did happen instead of making stuff up like they do now....Other soaps probably did that a lot more then Y&R did with Bill Bell in charge... Members Chris B Posted August 29, 2014 Members Share Posted August 29, 2014 One thing I loved about Bill Bell's Y&R is that everyone didn't know each other. I didn't find it to be like they were in story bubbles in a negative way, but in a way that made sense. Each group of characters then had their own supporting and recurring characters to balance things out and they crossed paths with others due to friendships, jobs and when it was necessary. In reality everybody shouldn't know everybody. Victor didn't meet Michael until 1998 and it was a big deal for Michael meeting someone that big. It reminds me of Katherine running around with that "Free Kevin" shirt. She shouldn't even know or care about somebody like Kevin. Now it seems like everybody knows everyone and there is no real rhyme or reason to why anything happens. I miss those bubbles and how they intersected with everyone else. Another good example of Bell's cross-populating would be the Barber-Winters and Abbott's. Of course Mamie was the Abbott maid and really a mother to Jack, Ashley and Traci. She was also a rival for Jill and confidant for John. Then they bring on her daughters and we learn Ashley and Olivia are best friends. Then due to the Mamie connection we had a Dru/John relationship. Due to that we got Dru in the mailroom where she met Neil, who worked for Jabot. It all felt organic and real. They created relationships and developed them. Everybody didn't have to be related to each other, but what connections they DID have were strong and their friendships helped flesh everything else out. I wish somebody would study the way Bill Bell, Harding Lemay, Claire Labine and Agnes Nixon worked (depending on the type of soap they want to write) and take lessons from that to craft a modern show. Really the only one that I can say was obviously influenced by Bill Bell was James E. Reilly, which is probably why I've been enjoying watching Passions so much (I'm currently in Jan 2001). I'd love to get a chance to see his version of DAYS which also seemed to be influenced by Bell from what I've seen. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
